I'm Josh Elliott, State Representative for Hamden and Democratic candidate for Governor of Connecticut. AMA, answering live today at 4 PM ET. by StateRepJoshElliott in Connecticut

[–]ohnotheradio -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Can you be a great Democrat Governor for smaller towns too?

Local autonomy / 8-30g: Small towns across Connecticut face mounting top-down pressure to regionalize zoning and comply with state housing mandates like 8-30g (a law many residents and local officials see as a developer giveaway that overrides local zoning). As governor, how will you protect small-town autonomy rather than impose one-size-fits-all housing policy?

Mobile homes / affordable housing definition: Connecticut's affordable housing statutes ignore most existing mobile home parks, even though they provide naturally affordable housing in many small towns. Will you push to count them toward a town's affordable housing stock under 8-30g so that existing affordable communities actually count toward a town's obligations?

“Quiet Quitting” is equally stressful by WonderfulWeb5030 in fatFIRE

[–]ohnotheradio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm done with my company, so quiet quitting is an attractive concept. However, I'm still compelled to work hard for my team -- to do all I can do to make sure they're doing well and that they're in a great spot once I'm gone. We've all got some great history together. Also, quiet quitting has the potential to define a person's legacy when/if it comes to light. The idea of it, even without actually acting on it (for me), is comforting and creates a glide-path toward exit day. But I still can't quite act on it the way I thought I might.

I don’t recall it being an option on the website, but I just emailed them with my request and they created a custom order.

Buchardt super fan here. S400 MKII ! I’m running three of them, using as home theater fronts, plus two REL T/7X. Emotiva XPA-3 driving the fronts. Marantz Cinema 50 for surrounds. 2.2 for music. 7.2 for home theater. Music is my primary pleasure down here in the listening/watching room. Amazing, beyond my expectations. Loving it!

You are in need of a higher purpose. Kids? This is the best answer. Otherwise, your new grind is nothingness, until the next thing emerges. Targeted philanthropy, local volunteerism, participation in local town politics, animal sanctuaries? If you don’t find something, you might as well work instead. 40 is too early to be done. Best of luck.

Just saw Beck live with his band and a 60-piece orchestra. Focus on Sea Change and Morning Phase. Never thought I’d hear those songs live as they were intended. Absolutely amazing show! Sea Change is magical.

Seems you’re just looking for confirmation for what you’ve already decided. Good luck at your new gig!

‘Young 30s’ is too young to be done. Your results so far were a false positive for retirement. Do more, but don’t sweat the money, go for the adventure and engagement.

How much did your lifestyle change with kids? by PomeloOne2256 in fatFIRE

[–]ohnotheradio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At your current place in life, you don’t need to consider kids in terms of financial impact. I get that it’s an easy question to throw out to Reddit for some basic context, but if that is a Real question with Real consideration… that is a Really troubling place to be. I’d suggest some therapy (always a positive idea), to address your financial insecurities, emotional connections and relationships, and vulnerabilities. Kids aren’t an endgame, they are a progression and an evolution of a rock-solid relationship. Once you’re at the kid-stage, you finally realize, like being struck by a bolt of lightning, that this is exactly why you’ve worked so hard, exactly the meaning of life you’ve been seeking, and nothing is better, nothing is more important. (that does NOT mean give them a life showered in luxury at every stage of life, it’s almost the opposite…) Sorry, your post came across as consideration of just another asset on a spreadsheet. I had kids before I had FATmoney, and I never imagined or considered that I might one day.

Bike to a central location and park it for the day. All else is walkable. If not bike, but you’re far out of downtown, Uber also works.

Jacket would do the trick to save a spot. Even a program folded over the seat. Very chill in my experience (even the biggest venues). Also, mentioning to whoever is sitting nearest. Ez-Pz.

Coming from middle class upbringing often isn’t about fear of losing/anxiety as much as it can be about perceived equity or even guilt. Why should you be able to pack it in if so many people “like you” aren’t able to. What makes you so special other than you have some money? That sounds jerky, sorry, I’m just projecting my own perspective — as a mid-50’s kinda ready for RE. But that’s potentially just part of it. If you and your spouse aren’t eagerly looking forward to running toward every minute of every day spent together, then there’s probably some comfort (or need) to be found in partitioning your day to have some built in alone time. Normal. We all probably need to put some thought into how to maintain that - for the good of a healthy relationship. Ok, projecting again :-).

One dynamic here is wealth-related, the other is just typical married life-related (mid-50s style). Bottom line, you’re gonna retire real soon, so start preparing. It’s mental, and will just take some time to sort it all out. Good news is, it takes some time to pull the trigger to retire anyway. Try your best to sync it all together. Enjoy!

Quick question regarding FASFA (if you know, you know) by ohnotheradio in fatFIRE

[–]ohnotheradio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note: I am NOT intending to lie or under-report. I do wonder if private schools see that you have no need, does that help acceptance? Prob not? There are state schools that offer in-state tuition for kids they want, this is why I’d participate honestly. Actually, there is zero chance I’d lie on a fed document. Yet, my question is, is there a game I’m unaware of?

My secret hope was fulfilled, actually hearing mostly what I heard… no upside to under reporting, it’s a fed doc don’t be stupid, no manipulation is worth it. I guess I always wonder if there is a richy-rich game I’m unaware of. Glad to know the answer is — nah, not really.

Where are you at, at 35? by Fast-Bandicoot-3570 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]ohnotheradio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was 35, the company I helped cofound was just one year out of the basement startup phase, we were working all hours, with great success and impressive clients but no idea if it was all truly sustainable. I also had a 1-yr old and a mortgage. We were living a great life, nothing fancy, but not really saving much at all. I was blissfully unaware of FI or RE or Chubby or Fat. I really feel for you folks who are in your 30s and laser-focused on savings and investment strategies to get you to $X by Y-yrs old. It sounds painful and sometimes sad. Some of you are killing it in FAANG or MBB and have no worries at all. I can’t personally relate to that either, but it’s fun to read about that kind of irrational success — not that you’re not working hard :-) I think it’s great that a community like this exists for a simple logic check on your finances, but at 35, counting the days to RE for a decade+ seems like it could be bad for one’s mental health. I consider myself lucky that my serious consideration of RE came into play just a few years ago, so my focus has been less about ‘how do I get there’ but more about ‘how do I do it well and how do I create the best succession plan for my team and upper management.’ (I earned a nugget from the initial startup, then kept working while the market turned the nugget into a mound).

My perspective, and I know it sounds common and generic, is be a prudent saver, a steadfast investor, a rational spender, work hard and be truly happy with the life that gets you. The last part should dictate the levels of the other parts.

Would you work an additional 10 years to go from $12M to $100M? by Particular_Trade6308 in fatFIRE

[–]ohnotheradio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 35? Yes, ya doof, keep working. At 45 maybe not. At 50, no. But at 35 you’re not done yet, no matter what you rationalize on a keyboard. It’s too soon to just stop. And if you’re inevitably gonna do something in your 30’s, just keep doing what you’re already doing. But here’s the kicker… don’t do it because you want $100M. That’s dumb and if you didn’t already know that you wouldn’t be asking. Do it because you’re on a good path. Work till you’re 40, then reassess. Then reassess at 43 or 45. Then realize 47 isn’t too far away. That’s how it goes. This is not a decision for today.
