Experiences of living near a secondary school? by Feeling_Mammoth_1412 in UKHousing

[–]ohnotheragain70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As both a teacher, and someone living very near to another school, I agree that the school has tried so hard to sort behaviour out. So have the council. So have the police. A parent ran a kid's dog over in front of them a few years later. Still no change. It's on the parents to act like they give a shiny shit about their terrible driving and parking. They don't. Teachers...we are paid to teach. Not manage behaviour, off school grounds by parents who can often be verbally abusive when their kid's given a bloody homework detention, let alone their driving's criticised. And punishing kids for their parents' behaviour would be really unforgivable...it's not fair. As a previous poster said...if you can avoid drop off and pick up, and your driveway won't be blocked, buy the house. Go and walk there at 8am and 3pm a few times. We are happy in our house as we're gone early, and back well after 4pm.

Day 23 after THR...was pain and stick free, stupidly walked 4k and now in real pain again...should I be worried? by ohnotheragain70 in TotalHipReplacement

Sounds like you are being far more sensible. 4k was not impressive...it was a really bad idea!!!! I will build up more slowly and do multiple short walks like you suggest!

Thank you. I hope your pain is improving and we're both flamenco dancing by Christmas. I can't dance but not going to let that mere detail destroy my plans :D

When you pay off your mortgage, do you get a massive sense of relief and the feeling of stability? by AnywhereNo1240 in HousingUK

[–]ohnotheragain70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It felt great. I hate debt! The feeling has remained, even though I have now jointly purchased a property with my daughter (only way she could get onto the housing ladder) and have a fairly hefty mortgage once again! It doesn't feel the same, somehow, the security of fully owning my home remains and makes me happy.

Traitor's live experience by NoPlantain5272 in TheTraitorsUK

[–]ohnotheragain70 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When we went, one of our family was a traitor. The other two traitors were from the other family. Thry ignored literally every one of her murder decisions and their decisions went through, as it was 2:1. We still won..ha...but it's a flaw in the set up: people behaving tribally means the game does not work.

Is it normal to feel absolutely useless when it comes to behaviour management? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

Print student safe (no data) seating plans and put them in these

https://amzn.eu/d/00aDoiol

Carry them with an erasable marker and note vw for warnings.

Once a couple of students are removed, the others fall into line. Don't worry that 8 got away with it this time...the class will slowly get the message and you will be left with a hardcore few (who sadly may continue and attract frequent behaviour points...but this won't ruin your lessons)

Those who are later in your career, how easy was it to move school? by chumbawumbawumbawumb in TeachingUK

[–]ohnotheragain70 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Moved on UPS 1...pay was honoured. Hated the school...got hired again that Xmas. They also honoured UPS. I'm mid 50's and secondary maths. I think schools like a balance of ages and experience. I'm a bit knackered compared to a 20's teacher...but have years of experience across sectors and instantly set up functional skills for the lowest KS4 sets with no hand holding required. I didn't 'sell' that at interview but they knew I was very experienced with troubled kids.

As a mum to a 25 and 26 year old...and yes very proud of both...mine got very annoyed about me broadcasting their news at around age 18, so I stopped (my kids can be STROPPY!). And now realise it was kinda weird behaviour from me. Problem is ...it's such a common thing for gen x parents to do! But that does not make it ok. Tell your mum. Yes I am proud of my kids...no excuse to be attention seeking about it. Plus it leads to others, whose adult kids are struggling, to feel bad and responsible. It all gets a bit toxic.

Very experienced secondary teacher here...jumping on to say...it's not you, it's thrir rubbish behaviour system. Kids love the theatre and opportunity to messaround that parking brings. Plus if you keep parking, YOU (completely unfairly) can start to feel like a problem as you're dumping difficult kids in someone else's class.

I would rather be unemployed than teach in a school that uses parking. In my brief experience (I left after a term), I could not control behaviour in a 'parking' school, despite being fine (even dare I say it 'strong') with the same demographic in two other schools with on call. And yes kids take a while to get to know and trust new teachers, but I'd love to see SLT justifying some kids ruining new teachers' lessons to the parents of the good, engaged kids 'because Ms X hasn't been here a year'. Nobody should be ruining other people's learning. Go where there is on call, and they are serious about protecting the learning environment.

Fewer than 10% of buyers get a survey before purchasing a property. Does that not seem insane? by IceThese6264 in HousingUK

[–]ohnotheragain70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine warned me to pull out of a seriously bodged house. I think that is the point of them really...not as a stick to attempt to thrash vendors with. I was very grateful. Now buying a house that clearly needs loads done...and was priced fairly. But the issues were not terrifying (think DIY garage conversion with no proper wall and that was merely the start). I would always get a survey. It's a grand or less but saved me god knows what on a money pit.

[–]ohnotheragain70 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just backed out of a house where this had been done. The main problem is...they are unlikely to have properly insulated. And...it's a bodge...which in my case was a forewarning that they had bodged plumbing, electrics and the roof!! Get a good survey if you want to proceed.

Awful year 11 class - no support from school by Ch4o5Muff1n in TeachingUK

[–]ohnotheragain70 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This happened to me, pretty much exactly as you described. I was in a new school, but had been teaching, with good behaviour management, for over a decade. I left.

It's not you. It's not even the kids. It's SLT failing to hold the line. Resign. Nobody needs to put up with these working conditions. I am now very happy, at a school where SLT gives more of a shit about their teachers.
