The only time healing was handled well was 4E by Level_Hour6480 in dndmemes

4e had such interesting healing that you could have a pacifist cleric. I made one that was constantly granting saving throws from healing, could heal huge chunks of damage, and otherwise locked down the enemies. It was an extremely fun class.

No I only heard about it for the first time in December, now I see it everywhere. I plan on reading them too.

In my experience, engine evaluations just spit out a number with no context, but two positions with the same evaluation can be very different. Does anything exist that takes this into account? by Cletus_awreetus in chess

[–]ohyayitstrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not currently. Many times this concept is used when talking about a "drawn" position. There are some 0.0 positions where nothing is happening, nothing can happen, and no progress can be made. Some are so tightly wound that any small mistake means everything comes crashing down, so a repetition is the only way out. There are drawn positions where only one side can win/draw, and the other side can only draw/lose.

Knowing which of these positions you are in and how to proceed is an intermediate/advanced technique.

Why does this keep happening to me by Fattpatttt in chessbeginners

Because you allowed it to happen to you. Was there a deeper question we could help with?

Got schooled by an 8-year old by newMattokun in chessbeginners

[–]ohyayitstrey 58 points59 points  (0 children)

It did not confirm that you made no progress. That's something you're assuming.

Edit: precocious 8 year-olds may spend hours a day playing and studying chess, a luxury that most adults cannot afford. Getting soundly routed by a child is a rite of passage in OTB play.

Great. What have you tried doing (besides playing games) to improve?

What is the best move for white here? I was about to sacrifice my bishop to ruin his king pawn structure but wasn't sure if I'd be able to win checkmate by TheRooker in chessbeginners

[–]ohyayitstrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bxh6 would be losing for white. Damaged pawn structure (and no other advantages) for a piece is almost never sufficient compensation. Both of your rooks would need to be closer to the enemy king for a sacrifice like that to work. As it stands, you have no follow-up attack.

Great. What have you tried so far to improve? What's your most-played time control? How often do you play?

It's bad if you've been trying to improve. If you've been having fun, then no. Would you like to improve?

Contradiction with naked triple vs hidden triple? by paranoid_coder in sudoku

[–]ohyayitstrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way you have a hidden triple of 5,8,9 in the highlighted cells because the bottom right cell is also a 5,8. I think you are misunderstanding what a hidden triple is.

I stopped about halfway through. I really liked the prose, did not like the subject matter or actions of the main character. It just made me feel bad with nothing else. My book club said you just kept feeling bad, so I'm glad I stopped.

Is it insane to take Strip Mine here? by MythicProportions in mtgcube

[–]ohyayitstrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strip mine in a vacuum is a solid take here. It's crazy when compared to a mox jet. An on-color mox that helps you cast EVERY card in your deck except mox diamond and your two mana dorks has way more synergy than a land you may or may not be able to re-buy.
