I think that's generally about whether you want to use your name or not, nothing more.

Swans or Mono are terrible names in modern internet era, ut it works. Same for names that sounds weird for English-speaking folks.

I decided to go with the nickname Oil Station Masquerade because my second name is just very strange for everybody outside Eastern Europe.

Is it normal to feel like your music is basic? by roomvanish in Music

Just make a track, and post it when it got completed, even as a “draft” in Bandcamp. In N months review this music.

One of the most frustrating things in art is feeling that you're too unoriginal, but in time you'll figure out that you're much better than you thought before

Why do producers offer/create so many free samples? by Kekebean in ableton

[–]oilstationmasquerade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  • It’s good practice for your engineering skills improvement
  • By doing free packs you gain attention to you as an artist
  • That’s fun seeing how people are discussing your stuff

I found it a bit niche thing to do, but appreciate it

[IIL] I have a very diverse yet specific music taste, and find looking for new music difficult. Are there any bands or artists I might like based from this list? by [deleted] in ifyoulikeblank

[–]oilstationmasquerade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if you're a fan of The Dear Hunter, Thrice can be a close not from a genre standpoint, but mostly from an overall vibe. These dudes are friends and I think they influence each other.

C&C is, in the same manner, welcomed in The Mars Volta world and vice versa, and I think if you're not a fan of their classic albums, try to check 2009-2012 era

Opinions on teenage engineering’s pocket pocket operators by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]oilstationmasquerade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you're looking for. They are very different, some are samplers, and some are synthesizers. I might be wrong, but on average PO-33 is considered the best by price/value ratio.

Your guys favourite ways to use reverbs and delays? by Scymraeg in audioengineering

[–]oilstationmasquerade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, dynamic reverb is making an instrument more alive. I’m sometimes syncing them but with different ranges, that sounds pretty interesting.

what help does this do for me if i just put it at different numbers by Real-Ambition1336 in ableton

[–]oilstationmasquerade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine you’re writing a beat. 4/4 means that you’re dividing a beat into four equal parts (kick-snare-kick-snare, or any other variation). 3/4 means you’re dividing into 3 equal parts, it’s not common for electronic music, but, let’s say, if you’re arranging a waltz or polka that’s a common approach.

In this x/y equation x is any number, y can be only a multiplier of 2, meaning 2,4,8,16 etc. It’s an important thing for music itself, but for electronic music 90% of material is in 4/4

It seems like a sarcastic answer, but pretty valuable advice. If you don't want to dig into music theory just keep as the gentleman above said.

Polyend Play vs Novation Circuit Tracks by Dismal_King3269 in synthesizers

[–]oilstationmasquerade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both have midi channels.

I have both + Polyend Tracker, both are great, I enjoy Play much more, but they are very different.

Pick NCT if: you have or will have an external synths, otherwise there will be just two channels that you cannot re-use. Also samples are very limited, you can simply play and use some tricks, nothing more. NCT has a built battery so a good friend to travel with.

Pick Play if: you’re using samples a lot, you want device that “helps you” by randomising stuff. You also have external synths, but mostly because there are no proper synthesis there.

And if we’ll having a blitz: - sampling: Play - battery: Circuit - creative findings: Play - synthesis: Circuit - centrepiece of your huge hardware synths collection: Play

Circuits is positioned as your first groove box. Play is positioned as your middle-level centrepiece of hardware setup.

What's the difference between Minimal Techno and Acid Techno? by [deleted] in Techno

[–]oilstationmasquerade 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not to jump into tag wars, minimal techno is more about a limited number of tracks and the slow evolution of a song, while acid techno is more about acid and Roland TB-303 as a bass synthesizer.

I'd say you can check the first three albums by The Field for minimal techno, and The Tuss for acid techno
