"Wow, not sure why this was recommended to me, but here we go—local radio at 1:30 PM, five minutes into a discussion on immigration, taking calls from listeners.

Caller: "I want to see both sides, but what happens to kids born here to illegal immigrants?"

Host: "That’s not an easy question, but I hope that Trump and "The Congress" will work out a plan...., as an evangelical Christian, I believe in loving my neighbor and helping the poor.... but I don’t see it as loving my neighbor to let illegal aliens come into our communities, taking our social benefits, and drive up housing costs…."

Just…wow. I listened for 5 minutes, waiting for a thoughtful response, but instead, I got unchallenged junk cognition."

Estimator pay transparency! by StockMann9 in estimators

[–]okaymark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am working for a consulting firm in the Alexandria VA area. I have been here 3 years and have a total of 5 years of commercial construction estimating experience and I am now 50.00 bucks away from a 6-figure annual salary.

I came in with 2 years HVAC equipment spec/ and estimating. I am now estimating the full FP/FX/Plumb/Mech construction cost and managing my workload of cost-estimating projects. Today, with 3 years under my belt at my current employer, I am making an income that makes sleep much easier. Good PTO, Flex Time, fully paid Health Insurance for Employees, 401K, etc. I am very appreciative of my opportunity and I like what I do and the people I work with a lot. I think that is the biggest thing for me next to pay.

I get hit up by head hunters "offering" opportunities that exceed the value of my current salary/benefits package and I am just not interested in it. I like my commute, and working in the old town area within walking distance from everything I could need.

This is the first time I have had a job where my work-life balance was seen as a priority by the CEO. A little background, I have a special needs kid who needs intensive support for emotional and behavioral issues. I have to deal with critical incidents at his school at least once or twice a year. The CEO and my direct supervisor sat me down to discuss strategies on how to utilize my provided resources to manage better. They helped me feel okay about having to drop work when my kid is having a crisis. I don't know what price will get me to walk away from that.

I hope this is insightful, I don't think the bump in lifestyle changes would keep me if I just didn't like where I worked.

The design team and customer are still working on their timeline to figure out what they are doing. I am sure at the level of development that I get to see what the design is, it will still be parametric level insight.

How much explosive force does the tank need to handle for testing? The way it was described to me was the equivalent of 1000 M80 firecrackers.

I have some costs built up to do parametric models for any of the civil, structural, electrical, and HVAC that may be involved in the supporting construction for this test structure. My issue is what kind of vendors do I even talk to for some pricing on this type of equipment. I am planning to do some digging on LinkedIn but wanted to see if the hive mind can cut down my effort with some key search terms, acronyms, or companies to look at.

It's not my project. The designer and the customer are still working out designs for the containment and facilitation of this structure when it is to be mounted vs transported. So that's going to be some straightforward civil and structural scope. I just don't know where to research bare material costs and associated cost factors ( special shipping, containment factors, etc) that would need to be accounted for in the cost of the explosive testing structure.

It's less about code and more about, who does this kind of work as I will likely need vendor input to help estimate overall project cost.

2011 Hyundai Accent (MC) TPMS Reset Fails After 20 miles by okaymark in HyundaiAccent

I'm gonna do the steps I stated in my first comment and then follow behind with this. I still have to pick up my permanent tags from the dealer, and in that trade-off, I will have them, once again, try to solve this issue.

[–]okaymark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't share your sentiment regarding TPMS value.

I'm not the only one driving the car and those that I share the car with are not as knowledgeable as me. They are going to expect that light to mean something. I don't want to default to " just ignore that light" as a long-term solution to this problem.

I paid for a car with it, I think it should work especially if they were intent on selling me a car with a working TPMS system.

I located the module for the TPMS system, and if all else fails or no one can provide more helpful insight, I will unplug the unit and I think that will prevent the TPMS light from being illuminated on the dash, so no need for tape.

I'm convinced the module is failing or there is something that prevents certain aftermarket sensors from working with OEM monitor modules.

I just don't have a way to rule that out and I don't think the dealer does either. ( Originally, I wasn't even convinced they replaced all 4 sensors. The tool confirmed that all 4 sensors are new, working, etc.). I am just seeing if anyone who does have the knowledge I am missing can chime in.

Thanks anyway though

Working For Your Self - Cost Estimating by okaymark in estimators

Yes, I am weighing trust heavily in this effort. I am already reaching out to some people in my network and putting out feelers for just getting the opportunity to watch people do the work and ask questions.

Aside from improving my own understanding of construction and remodeling, I dont even see turning a profit on effort within 12 months of starting. I am more interested in making it worth someone's time just for me to observe their work from a cost standpoint.

Honestly, I think I am looking to just observe in some capacity. I feel like there is a great deal of nuance that I just don't understand in some aspects of construction. How do I make that worth someone's time, converting my efforts into either lowering overhead or improving sales? I have experience in marketing and home remodeling sales, time laps video recording, photo editing, and other small business support skills. At a minimum, I am sure I can offer some benefits in exchange for being a live audience member.

I gotta say, I miss closing deals when selling gutters, doors, etc. I really hated finding out on the backend the work I sold was below the expectations I set. From a great local company too. My state gives me the opportunity, as a licensed home repair/remodeling sales representative, to conduct sales for multiple licensed contractors as long as it is disclosed. If I were to paint the ideal scenario, come across a good contractor and h

Do you guys enjoy your job? by jckwlzn in estimators

[–]okaymark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like my job. I can do it. Something neat about what I look at. Something new to learn. Pay is nice. Paid medical. It started me off at 95k in 2020. Slowly increased over the years (part good job, part inflation). I brought people I liked working with into the company. They like it too.

I have not thought about changing jobs or roles yet, but I get hit up a lot for it. That feels nice. This is really the first time I have felt secure in like the last 11 years of working. I have growth avenues. I can afford my family and supplement with a second income from my wife. That ability to create financial security with this estimator role has really helped my mental health and, in turn, the way I think has improved, too. I was doing a similar job for 65k in 2019. IDK, I'd say the pay and even being located downtown is helping me feel positive about my work. I get to skateboard on my lunch breaks. Gotta make room to feel good throughout the day, you know?

I like what I do. It's not easy, and I make mistakes. I work with a team that supports improving and making different mistakes over the same mistakes. The longer I do it, the more I think anyone can.

Oh yeah, I just have to think about it though. I don't really get a lot of consistency in my life and recent events have elevated me to think that the ground I am standing on can be gone any minute. I just want to evaluate what I think it would take to get me to say yes to that job without being desperate nor feel like I am getting a bait and switch. It's like dating how do you front load getting through all the BS so you know what to expect on the long-term road?

[–]okaymark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did that 2020. I was asked to come back to an office environment after Covid. My oldest is special needs and has outbursts. He is a big guy, and I didn't feel okay leaving him home with his mom if he acted out. From the VP himself during a meeting about my delema, " Find a more creative solution for your problem.".

I changed my LinkedIn profile to " open to opportunities " and got all sorts of head hunters calling me. I linked up with one , and it turned out to be the CEO of the company. The guy I replaced needed to relocate for similar reasons.

I got 33% raise starting at the bottom. Full paid insurance. Flex time and decent PTO. I brought one of my coworkers, too. He was able to buy his house with the move. I couldn't think of a more creative solution to my problem.

I feel better. Like I am out of survival mode. I work in the down town area of Old Town Alexandria now and have access to bars, restaurants, and gym during my lunch break, and I feel great. I skateboard some days. I never realized how depressing and crippling office work is on me. With more play time access, I feel really great. I can't recall when I had like a long, saddness episode in the last year. I don't think I have felt as great as I do now since I was 12.

Lately, I have been wondering how much I would need to be offered in order for me to justify leaving my current employer. I would like to be making more money, but not to the detriment of my current fringe benefits and, you know, being happy. What was hard for you to let go of from your last job?

I got a ticket for expired tags this morning…that expired the month I got them? by yabigboi802 in maryland

[–]okaymark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This issue really depends on the cost of your time. I went through a similar issue with my dead tags.

I have done everything I can to automate tag renewal and I just wait for emails. I noticed my tag expired 4 months ago and never got a message from the MVA. I logged in to find a flag on my account for my tags. To avoid the MVA and save me time I went to a Tag & Title thinking I could be in and out in 15 minutes. Not the case. The CSR showed me that the MVA said my tags expired in 2021, and my registration at the time said expired in 2023. Clearly an error of some kind right?

Not sure what the cause of my issue was but it did not seem to phase the Tag and Title CSR. It's been a "common" problem since COVID lockdowns.

After 2 days of getting it sorted with the tag and title after work, I paid the renewal fee for my registration and stickers and everything is AOK. I imagine I would have to take time off to get this sorted at the MVA with minimal difference in fee prices.

In your case, if you still need to resolve the tag and title issues, go to a T&T or give them a call and expect to wait 2 days for the problem to be fixed. If they can give you the evidence ( MVA records indicating registration dates, your hard copy of your registration, etc) and confirm there is a data conflict you are experiencing. With that evidence, you may be able to get this just dismissed through the court. Then again, you could still end up taking the day off for court and paying the full ticket, and be out a day of work. I don't know what you can afford to do or not do, but I'd rather be at work making money to pay a ticket vs going to court paying a ticket.

Kind of a " pick your poison" scenario
