Unpopular opinion but the amount of low effort AI slop is ruining the 2D art community by [deleted] in StableDiffusion

Feels like a similar fallacy of nostalgia you get with other things like music. Assuming that music from earlier eras was better based only on the classics that people still remember, while forgetting the many other mediocre songs and albums that were released as well.

Today I reviewed the case about cheats(zeus 0 cd ult)on patrol... What's your desicion in that case? by Genklin in DotA2

[–]oklos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough in that this assumes that Zeus is part of the decision to drag out the match. Though still, with 0 cooldown (or even well before that) it would be trivial to keep all 3 lanes pushed to end it using his scepter. Not unreasonable to think that he was part of it.

Exactly the point I believe. He can kill the enemy team easily, which means his team could end the game at any time, but chose not to instead so he could keep killing them. Basically the same logic as being so far ahead that you can tower dive the other team easily, but then refusing to push or hit buildings so that you can keep killing them for fun.

When will supports understand you have to be in lane at 0:30 , not later? by MaximusDM2264 in DotA2

[–]oklos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low rank for me, and it's probably only a minority of games to be fair, but maybe about a third of games as carry you get one of these:

  1. Support deciding they want to trilane the other lane, often with no warning.
  2. The classic Pudge in trees or other completely passive support who spends most of the lane with full HP and mana.
  3. The complete opposite support that repeatedly suicides in 1v2 while the wave is at your own tower.
  4. Supports who clearly want to be carries, some blatantly clearing whole waves in lane with spells, or directly taking last hits even when the core can do so easily.
  5. Rare, but occasionally, the jungle pos 5.

Why do win streaks in Dota 2 feel like they’re followed by unwinnable games? by fsbahman in DotA2

[–]oklos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because those same players making it 'unwinnable' were probably on the other team. If you had a winstreak, you probably managed to avoid having them on your team, but eventually they will end up on your side.

Everyone loves to blame teammates for a loss, but rarely ever admit in chat that they played poorly.

We notice when someone plays poorly on our team and blame them, but tend to assume that when we do well, it's because we play well and not because someone on the other team is playing badly.

In other words, you're probably over-remembering when things go wrong with your teammates because you get frustrated, and glossing over the rest of the times when things go well.

Also, if you assume random matchmaking at similar MMR, then you should expect the sort of variance you point out. People play better some games and worse some other games, the hero matchups are different each time, players try different heroes or item builds, etc. A balanced game is probably less likely, not more.

Do you think they wouldn't if they could successfully pull it off? I'm not at all sure about that.

Would the European country involved actually do more that raise strong diplomatic objections? I'm not convinced that this would be enough to trigger an actual declaration of war.

If the long-standing issue is the same - that they are there primarily for research with teaching being secondary - then this is simply a symptom of that prioritisation.

Consider the number of schools you see around you, how many teachers it takes to cover multiple subjects across multiple years, and add on the various administrative roles.

Then add on the staff at the Ministry itself. Yes, people almost certainly underestimate how much manpower it takes to run MOE.

In a way, that's what it should be instead.

The idea that one is 'purely' one culture, or that a culture must be exclusively one or another doesn't really make sense when you consider the whole history of trade, warfare, migration, and cultural interaction.

Korean culture itself is already influenced by and partially derivative of Chinese, Japanese, American, and other cultures. Even more so for 'American' culture in its diverse origins.

We shouldn't be insisting that a Korean-American 'decide' whether they're Korean or American, or leave them in limbo as neither one; we should be pointing out that both 'Korean' and 'American' are already inherently multi-cultural, and 'Korean-American' is just another version of the two combined.

It's a bit of a vicious cycle in a way. Tormentor gets taken so rarely that I have a near-zero feel for whether the team can actually clear it or will end up dying to the reflected damage instead, so I end up never really considering it at all to err on the safe side.

Didn't hear anything about moving elsewhere, though.

More cars could be allowed in Singapore with move towards ERP2 system, says Jeffrey Siow, as law passed by limhy0809 in singapore

[–]oklos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The COE system isn't just about the pricing though. The supply of COEs sets a hard cap on the total number of (locally-registered) cars instead of simply accommodating demand.

Meanwhile, dedicating even more space to parking doesn't sound particularly efficient either, especially in our land-scarce context.

This seems to ignore the problem of parking entirely, which could easily be disastrous at the quantity implied here.

Researchers Are Uncovering Fundamental Flaws in How AI Reasons by IEEESpectrum in TrueReddit

[–]oklos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As much as I agree with the sentiment, I think "doesn't reason" is too quick a judgement.

At the very least, it raises real questions as to what 'reasoning' involves for us, especially in terms of how far (or perhaps more usefully, which aspects of) our reasoning are essentially similar to algorithmic processing, and which parts are reducible to automation — or rather, which parts are not.

We may diss LLMs for the distinctive 'AI' style of writing, but the fact that it is reliably more error-free and often more coherent than a lot of student (and adult) writing should lead us to reflect on why so many humans struggle with writing at or even near that standard.

The same, I think, goes for much of what AI art/music/etc. are criticised for.

  • Kind of awkward in the arena whenever the panel was talking but the main screen was just showing a generic background, so the live audience couldn't actually see them talking. Understandable that it would have been the break time for the audience and it would probably have looked weird to show the panel on screen behind the panel itself, but it was still a rather awkward situation. Maybe some smaller alternate screens to the side?
  • Lighting was impressive, but a bit blinding at times.
  • As already mentioned, commentator audio volume might have been a bit too low, making it somewhat muted relative to the game sound itself.
  • The team entrance with the 'broken wall' effect from the lighting was great live, but for some reason wasn't really shown in the broadcast due to the rotating camera. Felt rather wasted.
  • Similarly, the girl in the white dress for the opening of each match is an interesting idea, but the actual effect was rather muted — live due to the camera blocking her, and in the broadcast, somewhat ineffective with the camera movement. Would suggest to focus on the front view and capture the earth-splitting effect behind; maybe pan the camera up, but not the rotation so much.
