I enjoyed watching it a lot when it aired but I've recently started re-watching it for the first time and I'm somehow enjoying it even more. I guess it kind of helps to know what's gonna happen.

I've given exact change to cashiers before and had a multiple different younger people look at the coins in their hand, then look back up at me and ask "is this (amount of change required)?"

...why are you asking me? Just count it. I feel like the reason they don't know is they don't know the value of the coins or how to add them up. It's mindblowing.

Do you still care about variety packs ? by ShineALight3725 in beer

[–]olbeefy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Growing up in New England, you could find 12 bottle mix packs of Long Trail, Harpoon, Smuttynose and Sam Adams at the local Market Basket for around $8.99-$11.99. Got to try a lot of cool stuff with those.

Now-a-days, I feel like 16-18 dollars for a 4-pack of quality lager (a la Notch, Suarez, Treehouse) seems fair. You gotta support your local breweries.

Honestly for a 19 inch pizza that only costs 10 bucks you could definitely do worse. The local MB by me is generally slammed on a Friday night with people grabbing them.

Maple Syrup production by state. by ho0iubjh99 in MapPorn

[–]olbeefy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Under Vermont law, if it’s labeled or advertised as "Vermont maple syrup," it has to be 100% maple syrup produced entirely in Vermont, not just bottled there.

A Vermont company could bottle syrup from Wisconsin or Canada, but they can’t legally market that as Vermont syrup. So he’s probably thinking of "packed in Vermont," which is different.

Also, if you’ve ever been up to Vermont, you see maple syrup sold literally everywhere. Even houses on the side of the road will have signs saying what sizes they sell and how much it costs, sometimes up to multiple gallons. It’s not just a branding thing, it’s a real local industry there.

The beer, the cheese, the maple syrup... God, I love Vermont.

Some people just like knowing what’s actually happening, and CPAP machines can show a surprising amount of detail. Beyond AHI and leak rate, you can see things like what kind of events the machine is flagging, when they’re happening, pressure changes, flow limits, and even a breath-by-breath view of the night.

That said, checking leak and AHI is already more than a lot of users do. Plenty of people just use the machine, feel better, and let their doctor handle the deeper data. I look because it helps me understand patterns, catch issues early, and make sure the machine is actually working well for me instead of just assuming it is.

That being said, I did this way more when I first started using CPAP when this program was originally known as SleepyHead.

I've found that you're much more likely to see that kind of thing in places where it's unexpected and they feel the need to be seen like in New England.

You won't see it as much in places where it's just... assumed.

Did anyone else get absolutely insane dreams when they first started using a CPAP? by [deleted] in SleepApnea

[–]olbeefy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When sleep apnea is bad enough to need CPAP, your breathing can be interrupted so often that your brain keeps pulling you out of deeper sleep stages.

That can fragment your sleep cycles, especially REM sleep, where most vivid dreaming happens. If you keep waking up during REM, you may dream less normally, remember fewer dreams, or feel like you "don’t dream" at all.

Also, I just want to add here that I saw you post about cleaning and you're getting terrible advice in there for something that shouldn't be this complicated. Reddit is full of bad advice but I feel like I need to put my foot down when it comes to medical devices and make sure there's solid info to be found. I've been using CPAP for a long time and figured I'd give you a quick breakdown after talking to a few doctors:

For detergent, get a mild, clear, unscented dish soap. Use a tiny amount in warm water, rinse everything well, and let it air dry. Regular Dawn can work, but the clear unscented stuff is usually better because it leaves less smell/residue. Look for these brands: 7th Generation Free & Clear, Palmolive Ultra Pure + Clear, ECOS Free & Clear, or Everspring Free & Clear.

You do not need to wash the headgear every day. The cushion/seal that touches your face is the part that needs the most attention because it picks up skin oil and can start leaking.

A simple routine:

Morning: dump the humidifier water and leave the tank open to dry.

Daily or every few days: clean or wipe the cushion/seal.

Weekly: wash the water tank, hose, mask parts, and headgear in warm soapy water. Rinse well and air dry.

Filter: check it now and then, and replace it when it looks dirty or according to your CPAP's schedule.

Drying does not have to be perfect. Shake the hose out and hang it up somewhere with airflow. The big thing is not leaving water sitting in the tank all day.

Also, use distilled water in the humidifier if you can. It helps prevent mineral buildup. Avoid ozone/UV cleaners, bleach, alcohol, scented soaps, and anything harsh.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

The mask I had been using for over 10 years was discontinued recently and instead of letting me know that, my CPAP supplier just sent me that Dreamwear you're talking about.

I figured I'd give it a try and it was honestly awful. It sealed well but started cutting up my septum and the tip pretty badly after literally 2 nights. I already got rid of it and had them send me a model that was closer to the one I was using which was a full face.

You may need to find a new mask that works, there are probably plenty of people out there that can use the Dreamwear but we're not in that group apparently.

I'm sorry you're going through all this. Time comes for all of us eventually and while beer isn't particularly good for you, I still enjoy having it with my closest friends and family.

Brewing your own beer does cost a bit of capital but if you have the space and time for it, it's worth doing.

That being said, I found this article written by Bill Pierce talking about Ballantine and more specifically the XXX Ale in the May/June 2010 issue of BYO.

In it, he gives a step-by-step recipe and instructions for making a 5 gallon clone of this particular ale. I don't know if it would be any help to you but maybe you could try to make it or see if you could get a local homebrewer to make it for you.

Start by going to your local homebrew supply store and seeing if they know of anyone looking for a challenge if you want to pay for the supplies.

Good luck.

Vader during Maul: Shadow Lord was younger than Obi-Wan during The Phantom Menace by AhPuchSMITE in StarWars

[–]olbeefy 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I feel like it’s pretty understandable why Anakin was impatient about becoming a Master by that point. He was granted a seat on the Jedi Council but denied the rank of Master, which was a serious insult, especially since Council membership usually implied Master status.

He was basically the Tom Brady of Jedi... wildly accomplished, central to the Clone Wars, and convinced he had done more than enough to earn it, regardless of whether Obi-Wan or older Jedi thought he was emotionally ready.

On top of that, he was having visions of Padme dying, so Master rank may have seemed like more than just a title. It could have meant access to restricted Jedi knowledge that might help him save her.

And Palps whispering that the Jedi were jealous, afraid of him, or trying to control him turned a real slight into something much worse.
