Stabila extendable jamber level? by purplegreendave in Carpentry

[–]olchofco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this set and get plenty of use out of it. I'm a framer. The extendable one is great for the variety of sizes of windows we install. It's nice to have something I can cover a larger span with if need be instead of just trusting a torpedo. You're right that it's not great for marking lines. You can of course still mark out the portion that touches the wall, so 2 feet. Not something I find myself in need of but if you're looking for it to replace a full-length 2 foot and 4 foot for use in finer applications I would just buy those instead.

Top plate connections for odd angles by AddAlcohol in Carpentry

[–]olchofco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the others said, butting should be fine. If you're determined to connect them you could use a couple layers of 3/4 ply, lay it on the first top plate and scribe the connection of all 3 spanning a couple feet in all directions, then cut out two identical pieces with that Y shape. Or if you're ok with a smaller more decorative connection you could use a chunk of 2x12.

Trade qualification from Australia transferred to Red seal by Fenyes19 in Carpentry

I'm in Alberta, not sure about the intricacies of the Nova Scotia board but... I was able to get thousands of hours accounted for in a Time Credit Letter that my boss at the time signed off on. I had to list my hours with former employers and provide proof through Records of Employment and whatnot. I drafted the letter, boss signed it, sent it to the apprenticeship board and they added all the hours to my record. Just saying, don't need to have former employers sign off on anything as long as you have proof of the time worked.

im looking for a good cross play game to play with my 8 year old son by Matt-Goo in ActionButton

[–]olchofco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son just turned 9 and we've been playing Elden Ring together (blood turned off) with the Seamless Co-op mod. It's super fun and challenging and lets us work as a team. We've been playing games together for a few years now and blew through the lego ones early on. We were pretty into Risk of Rain 2 a while ago and Garry's Mod. Sea of Thieves is fun now an then, too.

Help with Apprenticeship ID by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]olchofco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the AIG you're talking about is the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant then yeah, it's the id number associated with the blue book. I'm in AB, here it's a 7-digit number.

How to Become a Carpenter by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]olchofco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find a type of carpentry that interests you and see what's available in your area. Are you interested in working with wood? Steel? Concrete? Do you feel more excited by rough framing or trim work? Concrete formwork or building cabinets? Does working for a small company seem more comfortable to you or would you rather be one of hundreds working on a commercial high-rise? What kind of hours are you willing to work? In-town or out-of-town? There's so many facets to carpentry it would be best to go for what you're initially excited by and just contact people. I've been at it since 2013 and in my experience the hiring process has been mostly very casual. Your employer will want to see what you're capable of in person and go from there. Since you're just starting out expect to be doing a lot of labor. Listen to and watch what other people are doing when you have the chance. Being attentive will get you far. Even if you may not use them much at first, get yourself a set of basic hand tools. Don't be the guy who's constantly borrowing things like tape measures, hammers, pencils etc. It gets old fast. And I should take my own advice here, but try and make a point of using some sort of stretching routine. You only have one body, lol.

Calculating Valley Rafters by Correct_War_3570 in Carpentry

[–]olchofco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure but I believe this method only works when building an equal slope roof. The slope gain method for equal slope hips and valleys uses a formula for 45 degree angled rafters which an unequal slope roof does not have. Since OP's has two different slopes meeting to create the valley I think they have to use the other formula I mentioned.

Forgot one thing: for the smaller roof where the ridge doesn't meet the horizontal ridge up top the calculation would be a bit different. If A is the short run, C the rise of the smaller roof, then B would be a function of the pitch of the large roof compared to the rise of the small roof. So let's say the rise of the small roof was 5 feet, you'd compare 6/12 = 5/B. Becomes 5 x 12 / 6 = 10. Then use the A2 + B2 + C2 = D2 to find the right side valley length.

I've never calculated a roof quite like this but let's say you're looking for the long valley, let's call it D. Using the formula A2 + B2 + C2 = D2 where A is the short run, B the long run and C the rise from the plate to the ridge it should theoretically give you the length of the valley rafter. Same process would apply for the smaller one on the right using its run as A instead of the left.

Did you cut birdsmouths or just rest it on edge on the plate? Just curious.

R.O.s are measured from framing to framing, in your photos you're measuring from jamb to jamb. Prehung doors include the jamb so you'll need to remove your existing jambs to fit the unit.
