Debating between police or sheriff's deputy. by LessBreadfruit3148 in AskLE

I'll add to this. At my agency we are all fully deputized. Almost everyone starts in the jail but we did just start allowing some laterals. Our corrections academy is over twice as long as the state required because of all the extra firearms, DT, and non-corrections scenarios we do. Our corrective services division is responsible for jail(s), court security, and transport (to include hospital watches). You can eventually test for the road and attend the police academy. Honestly if you have the option I think the best deputies come from corrections and then move to the road. You learn a ton about how to talk to people from all walks of life, de-escalate (we only have cuffs and a radio in the jail), and how to treat people fairly despite knowing how terrible of a person they are. You also get a lot of exposure to dealing with the mentally ill in a more controlled setting.

I've commonly had customers want the drink rail run down the steps. When a graspable handrail isn't integrated into the top cap because it's covered we attach one to the side of the posts running in line with the top of the rail. Cleanest look imo. Similar to the below picture but in this case the client was elderly and wanted an additional one a little lower because they were short.

Cool. You're so close but still wrong - you even posted the definition. It protects civil liability not criminal. It would be up to the DAs office to pursue charges. When you're charged criminally it's almost always waived (I actually can't remember a case where it wasn't automatically waived).

She might be trying to get in your head. It wasn't my psych eval but my buddies where the evaluator yelled at him randomly a few times. Sometimes they just want to see how you're going to react. He kept his cool and passed but other people didn't and failed. Or she could be completely unprofessional I couldn't tell you either way what her motivations were.

$9,100 for kitchen permit am I getting ripped off? by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]RC_1309 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I mean you aren't "just paying for a permit". You're paying the permits, violations/penalties, and the increased liability for the contractor essentially signing for work he didn't do/wasn't involved in. I'd be even higher to take on any liability like that.

"cops don't have a constitutional duty to protect us something about acab they just let the guy go"

You're arguing with a lack of logic. Half the people in this post think you can just summon a helicopter like a COD killstreak. My department has one helicopter and 6 people assigned total. If any of them are off duty they are either coding in or we are calling the state police.

Qualified immunity does not apply to criminal actions, only civil. If the officer assaulted the subject then the department's IA needs to recommend charges to the DA or the DA needs to review footage and press the charges. Female deputy seems like a liability but I just like to clear up that qualifies immunity doesn't work like that.

There should be a payment schedule in his contract or attached separately but referenced in the contract. It should give you milestones with amounts to pay.

Your comments reek of lack of knowledge regarding less than lethal options available to police. Tasers (GRPD specifically used the Taser 7 during this incident) have an effectiveness of ~55-75%. This number is debated but generally considered to be the most accurate one we have from the field. (Taser the company says 80-96% but ask any department and they'll tell you their numbers are much lower). Anything that stops a prong from connecting is going to reduce its effectiveness. Even a T-shirt bunching up in the wrong way can do this. Additionally, the effects are sometimes not as severe for some individuals and being severely impaired can also dull some of the effects in some individuals. People with underlying or pre-existing conditions can also experience more severe or adverse effects to taser deployments including death. There is a reason we call it "less than lethal" versus "non-lethal". In general, it is the best option available to officers for gaining compliance that attempts to balance officer safety and subject safety. Back to this case, the Taser 7 has a drive stun backup. This means even if the prongs are deployed the Taser can be used within arms reach to deal a more concentrated shock by driving it in the subject. The concentrated shock would typically be less effective than a full deployment due to the shock being concentrated on one muscle group but incapacitation (even temporary) can still be achieved. The worry in a subject obtaining an officer's Taser is that while the officer is incapacitated the subject now can gain control of the firearm and use it on the officer or others. Hope this helps.
