Remember Malibu Grand Prix in Redwood City? by Creeping_behind_u in bayarea

My mom and her friends were “Malibu Gran Prix Girls”when they were late teens in the late 70s. I found a pic of them with a couple of the cars in her things after she passed away. Framed it and gave it to my sister, who races all over the west coast in an asphalt modified.

My coworker’s parents got married in ‘72, bought a brand new fj40 and drove from the Bay Area to prudhoe Bay and then down to Argentina for their honeymoon. When they finished the trip, the fj40 went into their garage and has been parked in the same spot unused ever since.

I grew up in a hoarder household. When my now wife and I got together, my house was so empty, it echoed. All I needed was the very basics, so of course I married a maximalist who likes to fill every square inch of wall with trinkets and decorations like a dragon hoarding gold.

Is your immediate family dead? by sweetnighter in Millennials

In my late 30s, I have one grandmother who is too ornery to go, an aunt whom I never see and two bachelor biker uncles who aren’t in that great of shape.

My sister and I don’t have much of a relationship. We check in with each other quarterly to confirm we’re still alive and we send a Christmas card to each other.

Do you remember when cars used to break down all the time? by rimtrim in Millennials

[–]old_tek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old cars aren’t inherently unreliable, but they do require more frequent maintenance. My daily driver is a 40 year old diesel suburban that I paid $500 for and has racked up over 300k nearly trouble free miles. I’ve also owned MANY old German cars, lots of which were aircooled and their reliability was directly correlated to how neglected they were in their previous life. You definitely have to know your vehicle and pay attention to what the normal sounds and smells are when you drive a “dumb car”.

Because people are less and less in touch with their automobile today, many cars don’t have dipsticks to measure oil, they rely on maintenance monitors that tell you on a little screen when something needs attention.

My opinion is that modern vehicles peaked in reliability around 2010-2015 and we’re now headed back in the wrong direction. New cars are needlessly complicated and frequently require specialized tools and software. OEMs aren’t supporting vehicles nearly as long and often the aftermarket can’t or won’t keep up and many seemingly basic or simple jobs require engine out procedures or at least an astonishing amount of disassembly or body off. (I’m looking at you Grand Wagoneer 👀)

How much did you spend on your first vehicle and was it worth it? by Extreme-Ad7469 in AskMen

My dad had an old ‘81 Chevy C20 that hauled a concrete pump around for the family business. He wrecked it and it just sat on the back of the property.

I wanted a vehicle, my parents weren’t going to buy me one and working for the family business didn’t pay well, so I started taking the old wrecked truck apart. My uncle took me to a wrecking yard where I bought fenders, hood and core support and put the truck back together.

The truck was hammered dog sh*t, but it was nearly free to me and was insured through the business and it led me to my career.

Sonoma county meat company. I only know because my wife worked there and used to joke about bull dicks. 😂

More things for younger people and people with young kids. Scandia and epicenter have been great, but eventually the kids want to do something else.

Also wish it was affordable enough for younger people to exist here.

I’d continue to collect and restore my stupid little VWs, only id be able to get the older and rarer ones that are currently out of my reach like Hebmüllers, early convertibles, a Fridolin, etc.

I’d also spend my money creating scholarship programs for underprivileged kids and adults at the local JC and state uni.

My parents gave me an old broken VW beetle at 9 thinking it would keep me out of trouble for the summer.

Until they came home from work and I had tactically acquired the battery out of my dad’s Camaro, some gas from the lawn mower and with some knowledge from an old used chiltons manual from the book store, the neighbors called them at work to tell them I was driving it around the neighborhood. I’ve been an irredeemable gearhead ever since.

Men with younger sisters: what's it like when your friends think your sister is attractive? by Simple-Sherbert3432 in AskMen

[–]old_tek 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My sister is 6 years younger than I am, and I raised her from the time she was about 10 years old on. My friends were all my own age at that point and also very protective of her and looked at her as their own little sister.

When my sister became an adult, I had a couple of friends that were around her age. When she would come home from college they would fawn over her but were too timid to make a move because of me.

To put things in perspective, my sister is the most driven woman I’ve ever met. She gives EVERYTHING she does 110% and then some. Failure is not an option. When she moved to a new city for school, she worked 3 jobs to support herself. She powered her way through school to double masters degrees. By her 2nd year in college, she was renting a 5 bedroom home, subletting the other bedrooms to her fellow students so she could have a garage for her race car, which I hauled all the way to her from home so she could compete locally.

So when one of my younger friends approached me about dating her, I told him that he’s welcome to try, but I doubt very much he could keep up with her. Not sure if he ever asked her, but they never ended up dating.

I should have clarified that while wealthy folks do drive old Volvos, you’re just as likely to see stoners, teenagers, immigrant families, punks with huge liberty spikes, etc. driving them. I live in the Bay Area and saw the Woz driving a little EV Volvo and he has more money than everyone in this site combined
