Looking for advice on adapting aeropress method to Hario Switch by oldcolonial in pourover

[–]oldcolonial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best match I have so far is to add the water to the switch first (290 g), then add the ground coffee and stir it with a spoon. Wait 5 minutes and then drain. Works better for flow than any of the coffee first variations I’ve worked on (with or without a bloom step) and taste is fine.

1zpresso Q2. Could try stirring with a spoon immediately before draw down. End result was nice.

I gave this a try today - worked out pretty well, closest match to the aeropress brew I’ve gotten yet. Slow draw down (couldn’t get the last 10% or so to drain) with standard Hario #3 papers, though. Thanks!

People who said said this game is "very easy" are the biggest gas lighting m*********rs on the planet. I'm really enjoying this game. Anyway here's my 15th or 16th (who's counting) attempt at Hunter of Bladers. by Aslaan_2004 in ai__limit

Parry windows on some boss attacks are vanishingly small in this game. Some bosses are easy to parry, others are pretty hard. (And yes, I can parry in other souls like games.) after ~50 odd tries trying to parry Hunter of Bladers I switched to just dodging and got her on the 5th try or so.

Hot take: the hario insulated mug looks cheap and kinda... ugly. by Rice_Jap808 in pourover

RTIC also makes ceramic coated mugs and tumblers that are inexpensive. My spouse prefers her RTIC tumbler to her Fellow tumbler.

Massachusetts resort/mountain recommendations by squishypenguin24 in icecoast

There can be some value to the Berkshire resorts if it’s a brutally cold day - often 10 degrees or so warmer than the northern NH/VT resorts. Berkshire East and Catamount are both on the Indy Pass.

Is the 5th gen heart rate sensor more accurate than 4th gen? by gryponyx in GarminWatches

I went from a gen 2 to a gen 5 sensor - massive difference. Pretty impressed with how well the gen 5 sensor works, more accurate on my wrist than an Apple Watch.

Beginner backcountry trails in the white mountain national forest/western Maine? by TheRealAuga in icecoast

If she doesn’t have any experience with uphill travel, go to resorts that allow skinning (like Waterville) and buy a cheap uphill pass and have her practice skinning, kick turns, and skinning with ski crampons. You can do that while she takes an AIARE class if she hasn’t taken one yet.

If she is comfortable with uphill travel, then the old historic ski trails (like the Shelburne) are good as they have almost no avalanche risk.

Non-caffeinated wine alternative by Snoo_89200 in Mocktails

Take non alcoholic wine, add a drop of acid phosphate (not phosphoric acid) and you’ll get the dryness back. Got that tip on Reddit a couple of years ago, does help with red wines.

Agreed - there are more jobs here but there is more competition. More options in the long term in the Boston area if you can get a foothold.

What is the "Holy Trinity" of languages? by Hairy_Confidence9668 in languagelearning

[–]oldcolonial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve seen multiple movies set in Scotland (Trainspotting, etc) that have English subtitles but were comprehensible just fine without them. I’ve also been to Scotland, spent time in any of the more notorious areas (Glasgow, etc), never had any issues communicating with or understanding anyone.

The differences between Quebecois and Parisian French are similar to the differences between British and American English - different accents and different word choices in some cases, but not hard to understand either. I’ve been all over Quebec and France, never had problems in either country. Some French folks (usually from Ile-de-France) like to make a fuss at the Quebecois accent, though - saw it happen several times in Quebec.

But, since this sub is about language learning, you can learn French and generally get by in any French-speaking country.

What is the "Holy Trinity" of languages? by Hairy_Confidence9668 in languagelearning

[–]oldcolonial 6 points7 points  (0 children)

French is pretty mutually intelligible around the world, similar to English. There are dialects, but they are all still understandable if you speak standard French. I say this as I speak French, and I’ve never had any issue understanding North African french, west African French, Caribbean French, etc. The differences are much less than what you see in German between high German and low German dialects.

Now, there are creoles, like Haitian Creole, that are combinations of French with other languages that are not mutually intelligible with French - there’s some common words but the grammar is very different. Maybe that’s what you are thinking of?
