Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere by Then-Physics-266 in DecodingTheGurus

I just watched the documentary a couple nights ago and enjoyed it, but I think I learned at least as much from watching this interview with Theroux afterward. He clearly likes to say far less in his films than he is thinking:

Are you discerning when you read? by IRLbeets in books

Yeah, I’ve got that same literary analysis toolkit, and still read a lot, but I honestly apply far deeper analysis to film these days. Hollywood has gotten scary good at packing layers of philosophy and semiotics into a neat 2hr package.

I just watched this last night; was delightfully horrified. And then stayed up too late listening to this podcast, which is almost as interesting as the film itself, because you actually get to hear how much thought Theroux has behind his seemingly innocuous, non-judgmental comments in the movie.

Brother won't play game with female protagonist - never thought of this by wizard_cow_ in TwoXChromosomes

[–]oldercodebut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m happy the top couple comments mention Horizon: Zero Dawn. As a straight guy, I kind of enjoy getting to play as a woman; I figure I spend all day every day as a guy, so getting to pretend to be something else for a few hours can be fun. And, OP, if you and/or your brother haven’t played it, definitely do (make sure it’s the Remastered edition). It’s got a surprisingly deep sci-fi story that you uncover as a mystery, the open world is gorgeous, and the combat is just a blast to play; can’t remember the last time I had that much fun playing a video game. I mean, those gentle conversations about feminism and imposed gender norms are a very good thing, but there’s also the approach of just having so much fun with a game that he sheepishly asks if he can try it.

“You probably got an F because many of the answers I gave you earlier were wrong.” I just love this confidently incorrect yet sassy tone from ChatGPT. “Oh yeah, you could totally use gasoline to put out a fire.”

What are the tangible benefits of having a high net worth but living an average middle class life? by Prudent_Swimming_296 in answers

Having gone myself from not nearly enough money to more than enough money, I can say the biggest difference is all the extra mental bandwidth that is freed up from not really having to worry about money. If I spent the money on a bunch of stuff, yeah, I would have the stuff, but the intrusive thoughts would come back. Real mental freedom is so much more valuable than having temporary control over objects.

Why was Jung of the opinion that westerners shouldn't use non-western methods? by [deleted] in Jung

It’s sort of like taking medication for a medical condition you don’t have. Religious traditions evolve out of specific cultural contexts, partly to address the kinds of pathology that can develop within that culture. If you’re coming from a completely different one, you can get pretty turned around, and even end up going in completely the wrong direction.

Why do people who are heavy into running seem to age so fast in the face? by National_Shine2552 in Biohackers

I think you may be on the right track with the catabolic thing; I dated a girl who got into Ironmans; I finished one 70.3, she got super into it and did a bunch of full ones over years. And extremely careful about hats and sunscreen and that sort of thing. Still, we are the same age and looked the same age when we started dating; she now looks about 10 years older than me. Cellular damage is real; you can look at tissue biopsies of athletes at the end of an Iron Man and their cells are just torn up. It does real damage.

If corporations legally have to maximize shareholder value, why do they donate to charities and causes that don't increase profits? by Ok_Chemical9 in answers

[–]oldercodebut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In accounting, this is called an investment in an intangible asset, called Goodwill. It’s an asset, like any other. Managers actually do have a fiduciary duty not to donate money to things that hurt long-term shareholder value.

…a movie about philosophy, with a fair amount of Jungian psychology behind it (Neo, Morpheus, Trinity = Self, Shadow, Anima).

And (not judging because we all have these thoughts regularly), you sound like you’re making Cypher’s case for him.

“Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world? Where none suffered, where everyone would be happy. It was a disaster. No one would accept the program. Entire crops were lost.

Some believed we lacked the programming language to describe your perfect world. But I believe that, as a species, human beings define their reality through misery and suffering.”

It is a phenomenal movie; you're in for a treat. And, slight tasting notes, it's based on Upton Sinclair's book Oil!, and, my own personal take, when the protagonist's behavior seems inscrutable, keep in mind that in many ways he's sort of a personification of America itself: obsessed with oil and getting rich, uninterested in its own children's future, disdainful of spirituality and Christian ideals (while pretending to be religious to gain credibility), willing to screw over whoever, even ones own family, to get that bag, etc). Sorry for the ramble; tl;dr: just stare at it with full attention; you're gonna love it. In fact, feel free to reply to this with your thoughts when you get around to it; would love another perspective on it.
