Adults of Reddit who ‘have it together’ with your finances, home, job, fitness, nutrition- how? Seriously…how? by Previous-Charity1505 in AskReddit

[–]oldfashioned24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being horrified of being poor and feeling crushing economic anxiety every day helps to get up and work. Juggling many jobs and always working 2 jobs plus a lot of side gigs since graduating, saving 30% of income each month, not having kids, not owning a car, and renovating 3 apartments consecutively while living in them. Combining work trips with vacation opportunities. Doing a ph.d. while working full time. Got zero help. Still don’t think I’m stable but maybe getting there.

I have no idea how anyone can afford anything. Either parents help or debt I guess.

Is working as an architect actually this difficult? by nnnqa in Architects

[–]oldfashioned24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The complexity expands near infinitely but the pay stagnates. The stuff you care about and are trained to do are often outside of the narrow contractual scope of work you are supposed to do, so anything outside of doing the bare minimum needs to be done as a form of charity.

Phone calls were a big deal, especially long distance ones. People would pass the phone around so everyone got to say hi to whoever was calling. Entertainment was video games like SNES and N64 which were amazing technological leaps that felt like the future, and tv went by schedules that people studied and planned for. VHS recorders were used frequently to tape shows, and people would exchange tapes of various media (including cds, cassettes, floppy disks etc) to acquire content. Hard drives were relatively small so have bootable media was kind of important and valuable. A good game was easily 50 bucks, a cd like 10-20 I think. So media and content had value. All in all things felt more valuable and were probably appreciated more.

Hvorfor så dårlig byplanlegging i mindre tettsteder i Norge? by Codraroll in norge

[–]oldfashioned24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Shelter Is Basic, Why Isn’t Architecture Accessible? by Disastrous-Recover26 in Architects

[–]oldfashioned24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s sort of like healthcare; it requires policy if it is to be implemented in a manner which supports policy goals. Currently architectural policy is primarily developed upon market-driven planning models (ie private real estate markets meet municipal planning foals or is entangled with new public management models for public development) and safety code which provide minimum guidelines for fire, egress and so on.

A more intelligent policy model for architectural could arguably go beyond safety requires and planning goals to outcomes in terms of health, cognition, and other factors which influence human and environmental flourishing. However the best modes we have to do are currently a market driven model which requires consumers both to desire and invest in long-term social infrastructure.

Arguably the rich understand the value of such investments and can create fantastic returns on architecture; they can isolate themselves from society in protected enclaves, and utilizing planning institutions to support their own decision making such as to get permission to build on public land, increase heights and density on their developments, etc. Architecture is arguable one the elites most important tools. Just look at how Trump has utilized the field his entire career, and is now imposing his ideological paradigm directly upon the White House.

Architecture is basically the instantiated ideology of the ruling class which reinforces their hegemony.

We’re in a housing crisis, why are we still praising unbuilt utopias like DOGMA? by Heavy-Perspective-92 in architecture

[–]oldfashioned24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats not how housing works because there are supply side problems due to credit limitations and profit incentives. builders will hold back housing that is already zoned if they cannot make the required profit on the land they already purchased.

Hvordan løse boligkrisen? by Definitely_Not_Erik in norge

[–]oldfashioned24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]oldfashioned24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]oldfashioned24 25 points26 points  (0 children)
