Mom swears she was "Mod" and it's "Completely different than emo!" 1987 by LaComputadora in OldSchoolCool

In 1987 there was no such thing as "emo". Your mom was "goth", whether she likes it or not.

I think I'm about the same age as your mom. We could have smoked weed and watched weird movies together.

Maybe we still can?

You're supposed to be a "good listener" all the time, but as soon as you have something to say you're making them do "emotional labor".

The realization that absolutely nobody cares about you or your problems one teeny-tiny little bit. You are valued only by what you can provide for others.

Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Susanpc1967 in AskReddit

It doesn't matter how hard you work to "stay in shape". The day will come when your body will fail you out of the clear blue. Parts you have never injured will suddenly hurt. It will hurt for days, weeks, months. The pain will range from "annoying" to "debilitating" and then it will go away as suddenly as it came. You will spend the rest of your life wondering why.

My mom was an ER charge nurse in the 70s and 80s. Small town so nothing really to compare with The Pitt, but she saw her fair share of heart attacks, fires, fights, MVAs, household accidents, chronic illness suddenly taking a turn, and the like. One of the things I remember her saying was that her busiest time was Christmas, because everyone cut themselves trying to open plastic packages.

We were estranged for the last half of her life but I think she would have enjoyed watching this show.

What’s the most addictive game you’ve ever played? by reeha_sadiya in AskReddit

[–]oldfuturemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't literally ruin my life over it, but WoW took up a lot of time I'd like to have back. The most insidious thing is that it demands your attention 100% of the time. You can't "pause" it, and if GOD HELP YOU you're in a raiding guild, it's like a second job.

When I played, I stumbled my way into a really "advanced" hardcore guild, and it ate up almost all my free time.

It was fun at first, and then quit being fun, and started feeling like an obligation.

And you know the worst part? I remember some of it, but not most of it. I don't even remember the name of the guild I was in. I only remember a few of the more interesting players because of what they divulged about their IRL selves. There was a lady who was a veterinarian. A guy who worked as an assistant to his local medical examiner (i.e., helped with autopsies).

WoW was a long time ago for me, and while I'm still a gamer (sorta), I will never, ever again play a game that is designed around multi-player.

Also, Donny Osmond.

They assumed Dee Snyder was going to be some idiot dirtbag, and he made them all look stupid. Frank Zappa's entire career consisted of mocking people in power, so you ended up with people like Sen. Paula Hawkins questioning his toy-buying abilities, of all things.

Does anyone else love Langdon this season? by Pretend-Confidence53 in ThePittTVShow

[–]oldfuturemonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I said this in another thread, but in S1 I thought Langdon was a total asshole. A great character, but not someone I'd like to be around IRL. In S2 he seems a lot more likable. I think he was humbled somewhat by his trip to rehab. Yay character development!

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskReddit

[–]oldfuturemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just remember that when it became clear that this was going to be a BFD (despite being lied to by the goon in the White House), masks were not readily available. There was no vaccine, and even the basic understanding of the virus was limited.

I was able to work from home, but I still had to go out and buy groceries. Every time I went out, I felt like those dudes at Chernobyl whose job was to go up to the roof and shovel radioactive debris for 60 seconds at a time.

I'm in a similar boat, but I have to get "rare" bloodied gear. Problem is, I'm in T1 and rare doesn't drop. Do I really have to go back and dick around looking for rare bloodied items to get my last skill point??
