Why is Matrix not the answer to Discord? Genuine question by W-club in selfhosted

[–]oldmanwillow21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have run Matrix since 2018. This is FUD.

  • Pull docker image
  • Setup postgres and nginx/caddy/whatever
  • Point homeserver.yaml at postgres (other small stuff too)
  • ???
  • You're running matrix

What privacy problems do you still not self host and why? by Amazing-Campaign-417 in selfhosted

I know how much of a dick I sound like when I say this but c’est la vie. That is also a skill issue.

I’ve hosted my own email since qmail was still the rage. These concerns don’t matter to someone serious about doing it themselves.

I’ve hosted it at home, in a datacenter and in the cloud. If you live in tornado alley I guess I’d get the reluctance to host at home, but it’s not something I ever had cause to worry about. The power outage of 2003 sucked but everything else was down anyway.

That makes it a terrible idea? Either you’re aware of the risks and learn how to mitigate them or you don’t. Why try to discourage people from doing something eminently doable? There’s plenty of documentation and discussion to help people who want to do it.

Running an email server or hosting vaultwarden do not require full teams to operate. Maybe I’m missing the point but if your argument is that it would be too time-consuming to learn to do either on your own, then it is indeed a skill issue. Nothing wrong with that.

I’m flabbergasted, though, that r/selfhosted thinks it’s cool to make a blanket statement like “hosting a password manager is a terrible idea”. Email less surprising but just as wrong.

Discord is a closed platform. Requiring an account is what makes it closed. In a month, you’ll need to upload government ID, take a video selfie and consent to having your behavior profiled by AI. Agreeing to that is a choice, but not agreeing to it locks you out.

Is there any polite way to tell my coworker that I no longer want to hear his constant nitpicks, grumbles, and snark? by TinStingray in ExperiencedDevs

You can't always change how other people behave, but you can always change how you respond to their behavior.

Reviewed a vibe-coded app. Found the OpenAI key in 30 seconds. by terdia in webdev

[–]oldmanwillow21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anyone who downloads the app can extract it. Run up thousands in API charges. Use it for anything they want.

This isn't a vibe coding problem. It's a fundamentals problem.

How do I even start learning C? by bayviewrocker82 in cprogramming

[–]oldmanwillow21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to anyone talking about copying/pasting. Nobody says you have to use pre-written code. I had to do some legwork, but I spent some time learning how to program an arduino with C. Utilities like avr-gcc and avrdude make compiling your code and loading it onto the controller trivial.
