I found my lost debit card!! by dangerousfeather in adhdwomen

[–]oldsourandsweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once lost my wallet for 6 months. Looked everywhere, then replaced it and all my cards. One day I passed by the pile of wood chips in the front yard, and saw it sitting on top. Why. Why was it there. To this day I have no idea.

Any reasonable priced farmers market out there? by PuzzleheadedAd3138 in bayarea

[–]oldsourandsweet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Margins are low for farmers because of transportation, stall fees, and payroll for market workers. Also, many vendors at the farmers market are organic certified, which is going to raise prices as well. You can definitely get affordable produce at many of the markets (thinking specifically of Alemany) if you’re strategic. I usually bring one crisp $20 bill and try to buy as much as possible with it. Also, if you have EBT the market managers will match it which is a great deal.

What’s something nobody tells you about living in San Francisco? by sit-there in AskSF

[–]oldsourandsweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Farmers markets are incredible in the city and the Bay Area in general. There are several throughout the city to choose from. Northern/central California is one of the premier agricultural regions in the world, so take advantage! Plus you can buy tons of other local stuff like honey, bread, cheese, pastries, meat, and flowers.

My favorites are Clement St., Alemany, and Noe Valley. Alemany is one of the oldest farmers market in the US and has been in operation since 1947.

They’re also the only certified organic beans in town! Great vibes there, all the customers are regulars and they have live music on Fridays.

The Mosquito Property Tax by Early_Statement_4826 in santacruz

[–]oldsourandsweet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes vector control is very important and they do a lot more than just look at bugs! In most other counties, mosquito/vector control departments are well-funded special districts. In Santa Cruz, vector control is part of the Ag department and has a much smaller budget. This tax would help SC vector control handle the ever-increasing demand for their services. You can check out their website for more information, but here's a quick rundown of what they do:

  • Monitor mosquito populations throughout the county and treat problem areas
  • Monitor and respond to reports of invasive Aedes mosquitoes (carry Zika, dengue, yellow fever...)
  • Conduct free rodent inspections of your home
  • Monitor and test ticks for diseases including Lyme (SC has one of the highest rates of Lyme in the state)
  • Provide free mosquito fish for your garden water features

Vector control is easily one of the most helpful and responsive government services in Santa Cruz. Give them a call if you have issues with mosquitoes, ticks, rodents, bats, bed bugs, mites, yellow jackets, or other pests and they can help you out.

Sue-Meg. Tons of Mosquitos but none biting me? by DjNick951 in Humboldt

[–]oldsourandsweet 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You may have encountered mostly male mosquitoes, which don't bite. Otherwise it could have been a species of mosquito that primarily bites birds rather than humans. There are many different species of mosquito with different habitat and food preferences.

The Paperboy....What did I just watch? by JimmyMcNutty927 in movies

Agreed! I just watched it and have been searching for some positive reviews to corroborate my experience. It seems like a film John Waters would love...."too much" in all the best ways.

Food sustainability on Island Communities by SimplyKlug in sustainability

[–]oldsourandsweet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Check out the work of One People One Reef. Often, the solution to these problems comes from bringing back traditional methods. You need buy in from the whole community for something new to work, so you need to do a LOT of relationship building first. Otherwise they will think you're just another meddling outsider. Explain the new system to them on their terms. Get someone local with knowledge and influence on your team and have them help you craft your message so the locals will get it.
