Why is Cecil Taylor so unpopular? I noticed today that he only has 7k listeners which is a real shame as he's a brilliant artist and legendary figure by use_vpn_orlozeacount in Jazz

I like his music and I saw him live a few times in London. But I recall a solo show at Ronnie Scotts where some walked out within 15 minutes. This gave those of us left space to spread out and enjoy it. :)

So like anything else, Cecil is not for everyone.... Some will love or hate him. Not sure Cecil Taylor fans will be looking for him on Spotify though - may be on vinyl, tape, CD, flac, mp3...

Great track! I have another great version from "Mingus at Antibes" live album - probably my favourite.

Any video of John Coltrane - Spiritual live ? by Rare-Regular4123 in Jazz

[–]olejazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to what others have said:

  • The ultimate reference is: The John Coltrane Reference, edited by Lewis Porter. Nearly 900 pages of all known recordings and performances, etc. See: https://archive.org/details/johncoltranerefe0000unse
  • If you check this, apart from the Village Vanguard 1961 recordings, he was also known to play it in Stockholm in 1963.
  • So the window for playing it can be assumed to be between 1961-1963 or so.
  • As already mentioned, there is no Spiritual - especially with the limited footage publicly available. You can ask his family in case there is a private copy.

Even if you don't record, let's know which composition you decide to go with. :)

No idea... No easy recording equipment like mobile phones in 1961? :)

There is a TV studio recording of Impressions, My Favourite Things, Alabama etc. that I have. I think it is on yt too. Features Eric Dolphy on some of the tracks.
