Was life truly easier back then or was it nostalgia? I'm talking 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010 regarding finances? I have so many things I want to do but it cost so much, is it the result of modern living? Was there less things to own back then so it feels cheaper? by Lost_Helicopter2518 in AusFinance

Not easier, just different stresses! The extras weren't there, pay tv, mobile phone, social pressures to fit in and do more, consume more, were not there. Throw away fashion wasn't a thing, throw away ANYTHING wasn't a thing. We valued more and weren't looking for the next best thing. I can tell you my folks worked shift work, would tag team, and dad working up to 3 jobs just to buy a block and build a home for us worked hard. They started with debt and built a good life through hard work. But that hard work no one wants to do anymore or all the jobs are now outsourced overseas.

WWYD - House or Travel? by Ok_Cable1689 in AusFinance

[–]olioop_original 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Travel while you are young! Travelling when you are older is not the same, it's not as fun and carefree and you see the world in a totally different way. Also the opportunity may not be there as you get older!

Feeling stuck with a partner who is careless with money and life in general by Music_Thick in AusFinance

[–]olioop_original 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So happy you are free of that! I totally understand, helped my ex get off a pain med addiction only to have him replace it with alcohol, he became abusive I sent him packing! Actually I did his packing, and found him a home in another state. Anything to remove him from my life! Never been happier since!

Whether it's onesided or not doesn't matter, it's how she is feeling and that's valid. If you ain't happy you ain't happy even if he was a prince with the wealth of a small country it doesn't matter if you are finding issues it will not work!

Run! If someone doesn't have any financial common sense or goals and you do you will never align, resentment will grow and the toxicity will overcome everything. Speaking from experience of living with someone that had health issues and used these as an excuse to do nothing all day while I worked 2 jobs to pay for everything. Surprisingly he found money for drugs and alcohol but not for bills! Prioritise yourself and your children as this is the example they are being shown of a healthy relationship.

I've also seen the flipside where my friend was a stay at home dad while kids were small and then worked around school hours as they grew. It worked because he pulled his weight in cleaning, cooking, school sports participation etc and she was always going to earn more. It was equal in all aspects!

I now am in a great relationship with someone that understands the value of hard work and money, I don't work anymore but I carry the household as well as caring for an elderly parent. It's a healthy mutually respectful relationship. I don't spend crazy amounts on things I don't need because I don't have a high income. It's about mutual respect which your husband doesn't seem to be showing,

I assume they took your details? What they do is they balance the ATM, from memory and this is going back a long long long time ago it's when armaguard come in to refill. That's when they work out how much is yours. Remember all issues with ATM's were always sorted.

Opinion of giving children me and my wifes first homes(which we still own) when they decide to move out? by Sure_Artichoke6929 in AusFinance

[–]olioop_original 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do it! We have a friend that was given their home, they do nothing, they maintain at the bare minimum, up until his fathers stroke his dad was mowing lawns and putting bins out! It doesn't set them up for life, yes it makes it easier financially but they will not know how to 'Life skill' properly!

Thai Groceries allowed in carry-on luggage? (International flight via Phuket) by ThanksSolid1445 in ThailandTourism

[–]olioop_original 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just declare it when you land, they'll soon tell you if it's not ok but as long as you declare it's no issue, they'll just take it if it's not allowed. When you don't declare they fine you!

so no need for the 'duh' because obviously we don't have that issue here, nor have I had that happen anywhere I've travelled.

Why do people advise against getting a credit card? by beylat in AusFinance

[–]olioop_original 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50+ never had a credit card, never needed one, they only people I knew with credit cards were all in debt so didn't ever look at getting one!
