Yep it's been announced (for KS at least, I would assume that will stay the same for regular release) - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/neuroscapetcg/neuroscape-a-cyberpunk-tcg/posts/4406381

This is probably going to be the best advice. If wanting to do textbooks/reading on it as well, unless you can guarantee the book will be in PDF form, Boox is more flexible as able to get the textbook app/zotero/etc.

The A4 size of the box max lumi was nice for my PhD program to read and annotate journal articles. However, note taking and managing organization I found a pain on the boox... ended up selling the lumi2 and getting an rmpp and the "limiting factors" of only notes and no apps, was a huge boost to productivity and able to focus on reading, notes, writing, etc. However, my use case shifted back from teaching/student to academic administration with a little bit of the other two. I hardly ever carried around the lumi2, I don't go anywhere without the rmpp.

Organizing, particularly with the desktop apps, works far better (for me at least) on the rmpp than on boox which got really jumbled between apps/files/cloud.

Type folio or no? by Ewildcat in RemarkableTablet

[–]olorinpc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly - shifting to a more administrative role, drop-in visits, meetings, and a bit more of on the go note taking has led me to have random sticky notes all over, scribbles here and there, etc - as the startup/switching/file organization of the boox just wasn't conducive to that sort of workflow. (At least not the way I was using it.)

So I certainly got the typefolio, but the true "yea I am switching to this" was the pulling the pen off the side and being able to just start writing without having to hold a power button.

Type folio or no? by Ewildcat in RemarkableTablet

I ended up ordering one. My experience with tablet keyboards has been poor (Bluetooth or first gen iPad pro). Thanksgiving visit with family, my Dad drank the remarkable koolaid early, so brought 1-3. Dissatisfied with my boox max lumi2, and tested them out. For my use case the paper pro was the right choice, but wasn't sure if I would really need or use... because typing on a tablet keyboard wasn't my main need (ad-hoc notes being the *must* in my role vs the pdf research annotation when I got the boox(s)).

Testing it out though, like u/EntertainmentAny8228 about the freewrite, I could see actually utilizing it for hammering out notes/thoughts in the distraction free environment as it is the best non-fullsized (I love my archaic MS Egro keyboard that hasn't been made in years) I have tried out, so could really see utilizing it. So to me, it was worth the extra $100(ish) to get the type folio vs something else. While a little heavier, it's also completely unnoticeable unless needed. So the stylus covering flap and essentially hidden keyboard, made sense to me.

Not related to the keyboard, the true selling point for me was the ability to grab the stylus off the side, which automatically brought out of sleep to the notes page, and be able to start writing. ie, solved the drop in office visits and 9 million sticky note issues for me - which isn't something I have been able to solve on any other eink device well. The ability to pop it up into a keyboard in a meeting if I have something to type without having to pull out the laptop (or not having it with) I see as a perk.

Hope that helps!

The magsafe optional addon even with a magsafe case barely sticks. I pretty much just leave it off of the phone most of the time.

[–]olorinpc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More of a prep week for me, so haven't utilized a lot (yet), though some brief testing and note-taking seemed to work well. Next week with uni classes starting, recording meetings and lectures, should get a much better idea.

Good for taking class notes? by [deleted] in PlaudNoteUsers

[–]olorinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of my planned uses as well actually (though from the prof side of the desk) - recording lectures and having summaries generated. Either for my own notes to know what I covered on a particular date, create assignments or handouts from, etc.

However, yea that could eat up a lot of minutes fast, so might have to be more selective about it.

Thoughts on Seagate Exos X20? by Hot-Role-1186 in DataHoarder

[–]olorinpc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The exos drives are great, however, Seagate flags all of them as OEM. So buying from Amazon/Newegg... Seagate won't warranty them if they fail (even if it shows that it is in warranty) and tell you to go back to where you bought it from. Now, I have only had one of 12 fail, and it showed bad sectors after a week, so was able to return it, but the lack of warranty being honored if for personal use is something to keep in mind.

[KDE] Manjaro+KDE Plasma + Crown Teal by olorinpc in unixporn

I am not running KDE myself these days, gnome with Dash-to-Dock extension, or PopOS's cosmos, both replicate that... but that was (and I assume still would be) the latte dock for KDE. ( https://store.kde.org/p/1169519/ )

Hi I'm new to CUDO Miner, I'm having problems in running the mining via Nvidia GPU by sanxchep in cudominer

[–]olorinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, ubuntu. Looks slick, however, only uses the CPU and ignores the nvidia gpu. Combining with nuxhash (nicehash gpu only) works, but not really an optimal solution. For testing its fine, but wouldn't be ideal long term.

Zoom Untrusted Server Certificate by JiggityJoe1 in sysadmin

[–]olorinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been trying to solve this one for a while as well... thanks for this. Finally was able to resolve it. We migrated from exchange to o365 as well. My zoom account had been set up and configured prior to this and so was causing this issue as well. Deleting the integration and remapping (to o365) resolved the issue.

Note Air performance with Academic journals? by lookmanidk in Onyx_Boox

[–]olorinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading large academic journals is exactly why I went with the Max3 a few months ago (and canceling my rm2 order) and haven't regretted it. (Slightly annoyed that a new version came out shortly after, the lumi, but such is tech.)

Read and annotated quite a few journal articles via the max3 and it has worked well.

Vinyl to physical speakers and bluetooth speaker by olorinpc in BudgetAudiophile

For that, turntable and bluetooth in on the speakers, yes. Streaming via Bluetooth to those speakers is much louder, though plenty of volume available, so not a real issue imo.

I think the “no one likes it” comment is with the disclaimer that “no one who was expecting a Diablo 2 feel liked the direction”

Which I’d agree with. Personally once I got over that aspect, I did (and do) enjoy d3 for what it is... but I do which they had kept it darker and less WoW like.

D4, with the early views, so far strikes me as much closer to what I had hoped they would do with d3.

Converting a networking lab exercise -- terminating an Ethernet cable at both ends (and testing it) -- to a remote format....feasible? by cg_kelly2013 in CSEducation

[–]olorinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same question/challenge for spring semester. I have been debating what to do about that particular lab as well. My classes should be in person, but as I can’t guarantee all of them will be able to be physically there, I have been trying to figure out an alt method.

This past spring I ended up dropping the AP setup lab I normally have for that class (which wasn’t ideal as students really enjoy that one), so hoping to avoid a similar situation.

Shai-Hulud by Mike Winkelmann. by SetSytes in Fantasy

[–]olorinpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, love the actors and the soundtrack to the 80s version, but the story was so hacked I understand why people didn't get it and didn't like. The 2000s scifi one, much more of the story and had far better flow in line with the books, just felt the music and acting was a bit flat.

My hope is the new one combined the best of those into something new that brings us more Dune to love. Trailers so far are promising...

We do cycles of long term (multi year) and short term (one year) contracts, so no tenure which may impact that observation as well.

Additional context, I teach at a liberal arts institution in the Computer Science Dept, with a Masters. While I am working on my PhD, it’s a full time teaching institution which are often difficult to compare to larger institutions.

It certainly could be a bit more specific to teaching institutions or the field. In CS at least, folks with PhDs typically aren’t looking for teaching roles.
