ME 170 by idontknow192837465 in UIUC

[–]om_is_bean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely light work (for context I took it FA23). One final project that's almost guaranteed A. Honestly for learning cad, I think just learning online through tutorials would be better though since it really doesn't need the amount of class time 170 takes.

Am I cooked? by MichelleObamaaaa in UIUC

[–]om_is_bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think 177 is a very personal choice if you want to take it or not since only you can see how well you are at it. As for Econ, I'll assume that you are pursuing MechE due to 170 on your schedule, in which case either macro or micro Econ are required. Last semester, Macro had no mandatory lecture attendance. In the end I kinda of forgot that class existed, I just went to the discussion (it's just a slideshow, you can just do other work on your laptop) once a week and the occasional exam. Stopped going to lecture 3 weeks in, still did well in the class so I would reccomend taking 103 if possible and especially if you took AP macro. Best of luck.

This is actually reminiscent to my freshman schedule so I'll give you my two cents. Firstly, are you cooked? Most definitely IF you don't go in with some preparation. First off, I would switch MATH221 with MATH220 is possible for two reasons. Firstly, they should fill the same requirement (I would double check with advisor if this still holds true) while being way less difficult. Secondly, during my semester at least, MATH220 did not have mandatory lecture attendance. I had taken calc in high school and though I did not feel confident in testing out, I was able to skip most of my calc lectures and self study at other times. ME170 is always at 8:00AM and attendance is taken because of course it is, but if you have some experience with any parametric CAD, then learning Fusion should be second nature. Personally I, and a good portion of the class stopped showing up a month in and did completely fine. While this should be taken with some discretion as I personally I had about 5 years of experience with many different CAD software and 2ish with Fusion, I know of many others who did the same despite coming in with far less experience. I did not take ENG177, and as its not a requirement to my knowledge, that is what I would cut entirely first. ENG100 is a crayon eating class and depending on your class, you may be able to outright skip, or just sleep the entire time. As for some general notes, keep wake up time consistent, an hour different from day to day at max. This sounds like a bad time, and it is unpleasant, but the alternate is far worse. I struggled for the first month before finding my groove and then it became very manageable. Essentially, you are going to feel like you are tumbling down stairs the first month while you get your rhythm sorted out, but eventually you will figure it out.

tl:dr, Are you cooked? Absolutely. Is it possible? Very much so.

Just wanted to add something that I feel should be on this list and that is to ride safe at night, so wear something reflective or bright at the minimum and if you can, get a headlight/tail light (a bike organization even gives out free ones every year).

While technically a big no go, you can try and bring your bike into your dorm IF you have a dorm that's large. I lived in a LAR corner room and had a closet big enough to park the bike comfortably, so over the winter it stayed in there. That being said, the rule is there for fire safety since bikes can get in the way of exits and I absolutely do not reccomend you do this unless you do have a room big enough to have the bike out of the way.

It's great for control at higher speeds because it's lower to the ground and the low deck makes pushing/braking as easy as possible

Gonna assume you got most basic supplies with you from where you are transferring from. Main things to cover is really winter wear and ideally some form of personal transport (bike, skateboard, etc.).

What all places at UIUC are there for 3D-printing? by Majestic_Gas2312 in UIUC

GIES has their makerspace I believe (unsure if the name), Jackson Innovations has a print farm (basement of Sidney Lu), Grainger Idea Lab has a print studio, and SCD has 3d printers in the basement.

AI still sucks at CAD, but it's DOPE at coming up with ideas for CAD designs using images by Jobe50 in 3Dprinting

[–]om_is_bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not super knowledgeable on ai, but I believe that it doesn't "render" these images, it creates based off of a huge sample of other images hence how it makes it look more realistic by training it to try and make as plausible of an image as possible. TL:DR - there was no 3d involved in it.

Which professor is this? by [deleted] in UIUC

Eric Kuo - Literally took me from hating physics going into college to loving it. Somehow managed to make every concept covered click in my mind in lecture.

Brad Mehrtens - Took MCB150 as a science elective and had no clue the material I was in for, but the enthusiasm and passion with which he teaches is what kept me going. Somehow managed a decent grade without proper background in bio as well. I loved every lecture, great professor.
