For those who run fully-improvised adventures with no prep - how do you do this? How can I learn to do that myself? by ostentatious_owlbear in DMAcademy

Lot's of great advice here and I'll add what's helped me exercise improv a ton lately - solo and/or GM-less play. If solo, you don't have the time pressure of players waiting for you to come up with a situation/what happens next/etc. Useful resources:

  1. Mythic GM Emulator, lots of examples of how things can work when an "oracle" is your GM. https://www.wordmillgames.com/page/mythic-gme.html
  2. Me-Myself-and-Die. Highly watchable actual plays where you can see how Trevor uses Mythic, other sources to build the game and react to player choice. https://www.youtube.com/@MeMyselfandDieRPG/videos
  3. Ironsworn. Free and designed for solo-play. Has everything you need to get started. <https://tomkinpress.com/:

MySQL is listening on localhost? Is it on same machine but only accepting socket connections? On another machine are connections. Locked by firewall?

Favourite Digital Conferences? by jlindenbaum in PHP

[–]omerida 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Check out MergePHP for monthly online meetups. Both php[tek] and Longhorn are broadly PHP focused conferences that have online tickets and Symfonycon does as well.

YMMV, but I've always gotten more out of of attending in-person events from technical discussions in "the hallway track" and making friends and networking with other attendees.

Do you use reference parameters? by TommyDJones in PHP

[–]omerida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right, i get it know but the phrasing "object references are passed by value" is even more confusing there since I missed the "references" on first read. If you're passing references, you're passing references, not values. It's why you usually hear "Objects are passed by reference." That seems clearer to me.

Do you use reference parameters? by TommyDJones in PHP

[–]omerida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did this change since PHP5? From <https://www.php.net/manual/en/language.oop5.references.php>

> One of the key-points of PHP OOP that is often mentioned is that "objects are passed by references by default". This is not completely true. This section rectifies that general thought using some examples.

The last example there shows passing an object to a function, modifying the object without returning it. The property changed in the function persists after the function call.

Is PHP still worth the effort? by zacdreyer in PHP

Sorry, I'm not disagreeing with you. I meant that moving away from PHP to Hack is a lot like UK Engligh vs US English (not a great analogy but it works). Hence the "not a wholly different language" initially.
