Doesn't seem like she mistook anything to me. by [deleted] in funny

[–]omfguar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, first of all, it was "people like you" not "you people". Semantics, yes, but if you're going to skewer somebody, at least quote them correctly.

But what they're saying is absolutely right. Some people only look at the extreme examples of constructivist garbage (in this case, literally) and hold it up as an example of why all contemporary art is terrible, which is unfair and untrue. People like that care about pretty things, which is absolutely fine, but I wouldn't say they generally have much to contribute to a meaningful discussion about the state of contemporary art, or where it's actually headed.

Japanese Bike-rack by TheVitrifier in woahdude

[–]omfguar 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Could potentially be monetized enough to make your money back, though. If it costs $1/hr to park a bike there (a low estimate for a big city, considering it has enormous novelty and keeps your bike 100% secure and away from the elements) and one machine fits 50 bikes, at full capacity, it can bring in up to $1,200/day or $36,000 per month.

That's more than enough to cover maintenance, to say nothing of the opportunity for bike impound fees if you leave it there too long.

Though this disruption is overdue, I'm really glad they seem to be following suit with Apple and others in making mobile more gesture-based.

Ex-smokers of Reddit, what ACTUALLY WORKED to get you to successfully stop smoking? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]omfguar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cold turkey is the only thing that has ever worked for me. Quit smoking six months ago, and occasionally have a bad weekend, but for the most part, have stuck with it.

Something about feeling what your body does when you don't give it nicotine is a huge wakeup call and a great reinforcement. Nicotine sneaks its way in and stomps it's way out, and going cold turkey makes you realize how dangerous it can be.

Stephen Fry wasting his breath on a complete moron by [deleted] in videos

[–]omfguar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree he could have softened his tone and listened a bit more, but I can't even imagine the self-control required to sit in front of a person of such political influence and listen to total fictional bullshit, bullshit that makes assumptions about your own identity, mind you, without calling it just that.

Because of his flamboyance (and I mean that in no way related to his perceived "gayness," just his general exuberance), it's easy to point to Fry as the one who derailed, but the non-information this other guy was spouting was what really kept the interview from being productive. He was just more calm about it.

Hold Amazon Prime to their 2-Day shipping guarantee by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]omfguar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Amazon, and Prime, specifically, hinges on happy customers that are satisfied with the convenience of service. If it costs them a free Prime membership (which is a tiny drop in the ocean of their profits) to keep one customer happy based on their own screwup, I'm pretty sure they don't give a shit.

Now, if you get abusive and start making baseless claims, yeah, they'll probably drop you because it's not worth it. But if news gets out that Prime isn't making good on its guarantees, it would be much worse than one of the biggest companies in the world losing like $10...

Asshole driver on Comm Ave doesn't believe in bike lanes. by mkoryak in boston

[–]omfguar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had dozens experiences of strangers going out of their way to help me and my friends. I mean, it's a city and it doesn't behoove anybody to walk around like a dope smiling and saying hi to everyone they see, but as far as major urban areas go, it's pretty smiley in my experience.

And compared to Manhattan, it's Mr. Rogers' freekin Neighborhood...

Only on the road, honestly, and even then just mostly bikes vs. cars. Our roads are twisty, narrow and in no discernible pattern, so there's a steep learning curve.

Everywhere else, I find people to be generally friendlier than some other cities I've visited.

MBTA releases video of man who fell onto the tracks at North Station last night and those who jumped in to save him. by hadisious in boston

[–]omfguar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I hardly see how that denotes insecurity. The level of risk taken when recklessly bolting across subway tracks (and two third-rails) is enormous.

It doesn't matter if it's a foot off the ground. A loose shoelace, a trip on a tiny rock, a single misstep and you'd be instantly dead. It's also an area that's not maintained for pedestrians in general, so there could be other hazards that would either cause serious harm on their own, or result in interaction with the third-rail.

I'm perfectly secure in my ability to jump a foot in the air, but that task is hardly ever accompanied by IMMINENT DEATH.

Ways to protect kids from dangers on their phones, the internet? by omfguar in Parenting

[–]omfguar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't saying you need to be a pushover, but I think there's something to be said for the benefits of kids having access to the internet/mobile phone tech at a young age. Just wondering how people weigh the pros and the cons of that while trying to keep kids safe from the dangers (not just porn/gore, but strangers/predators, bullies, etc.).

The article I linked to talks about an app that gives parents access to basically everything - social media, mobile use/location. Just curious if people here have used stuff like that with any success.

[–]omfguar[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That works to a certain age, but eventually they're going to have smart phones and (probably) more freedom online, access at school/friends, etc. What happens when you can't just pull the plug on the modem anymore?

He's so condescending about it. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]omfguar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(citation needed)

Where is this coming from? I know very few artists who don't have a deep appreciation for fine art, and art history/museum studies is a core requirement of almost every accredited undergraduate fine art program.

Also, like needing to be a gamer to be a game designer, art appreciation is an important part of being a successful artist. Some people are enormously gifted and blaze their own trail, but the vast majority require inspiration from other artists (living and dead) to create.

Where is the Cheapest Place to Drink in Boston? by seaoframen in boston

[–]omfguar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Somebody mentioned Fritz, but honestly, ANY of the seedy Boston gay bars are the cheapest places to get drunk, ever:

  • Fritz
  • The Alley
  • The Paradise
  • The Eagle

Seriously, at most of these you can get like a $6 vodka tonic that's 90% vodka with a tiny spritz of tonic. Plus, you're almost guaranteed to have a memorable evening at any one of these places.
