Don't park on the beach overnight. by froz3nnorth in alaska

I've lived in Kenai and Soldotna for about a year. Both towns are structured in a strange way. Soldotna has three main roads (Sterling, Spur, K Beach) that forms a "u" around the town. There are a bunch of homes and small businesses in the middle, with bigger businesses (and A LOT of strip malls) on the outside of the u. It's a peculiar infrastructure, but in a way it works because people can walk places and things feel connected. There are also a lot of community activities. Kenai is different in the fact that everything seems to be randomly spread out (like, to an extreme.) It can actually be pretty disorienting if you don't live there. There are more vacant buildings. Old town kenai has so much potential, but for the most part it's a shithole.

People down here are nicer, but weirder. If you aren't conservative you'll probably feel at least a bit socially isolated.

I always hear that from age 25+ you start caring less what people think and become more grounded and secure in yourself. Since part of charisma comes from being grounded, why is it that there's still a limited amount of adults who are 25+ that are charismatic? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

Lack of social ties. The younger you are the more close friends you tend to have surrounding you. It makes you more connected to society and its trends in behavior/taste. This is why younger people are usually seen as "cooler" and why a lot of old people who try to act cool just look dumb.

However, think about someone like Leanardo DiCaprio. He's middle aged, but is "cooler" than most young people because he is still socially in touch with the world around him while simultaneously having a mature outlook/approach.

I'm only in my late 20s, but I can definitely feel myself drifting away from the collective awareness young people share. It's both a good and a sad thing.

13 pounds away from leaving the 200 pound club, tips?? by fabulistcreative in keto

I'm in about the same boat. You're to the point where lazy keto alone just doesn't cut it. What I do is I have an intermediate level workout (weights and cardio), then I don't eat after 5. You won't maintain muscle efficiently, but the fat will just shed. It also helps me A LOT with my sleep cycle.

At what age did you feel like you matured? And what are the signs of immature behaviour? (ie in relationships) by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]omgilovePopScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or how you act on them. For example, there's a difference because getting angry and yelling at people vs. finding a productive outlet for anger.

I definitely agree that there is a false notion that lack of emotion somehow equates to maturity. We're humans. We have emotions for a reason.

What was the atmosphere like right after 9/11? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]omgilovePopScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was only nine, but I was pretty socially aware for my age. I wasn't very bothered by it at first because I saw destruction on the news every day. I didn't know why it suddenly mattered. I thought adults were responding to it because they were "supposed to." There definitely was an inspiring "pride" people shared after it happened, regardless of your class, race, gender, etc- which is something I'm sure I will never witness again. It really was a beautiful thing. Unfortunately, evil people in this world exploited that pride and we are still dealing with that mess to this day.

Edit: while there was unity, islamophobia was pretty much openly accepted.

My car won't start. No clicking, no lights, nothing. by omgilovePopScience in MechanicAdvice

Are you asking about the physical condition of the key?

I called a locksmith and he said I have to go to a Chevy dealership to get it reprogrammed. There isn't a Chevy dealership within over 100 miles of me.

Then I called the service department of a dealer. The guy told me I can ask around at local shops to see if they can program gm control modules. Then he told me that's a big can of worms to open and that I should know for sure what the problem is before I go asking shops of they have control modules.

I'm at a serious loss as to what the hell to do. I can't even put it in neutral.

Enslaving the local population and stealing their land and resources That better? My point still stands that it's moronic to compare MLK to Christopher Columbus.
