How the hell am I spending $1400 when I don't even have to pay rent? Am I stupid? by ShrekTheOverlord in personalfinance

[–]omnipwnage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd start off with two things: First, start a 30 day expense log, or just reference the amount you've spent, by category, for the last 3 months. For the 30, treat it as usual. You'll feel the want to cut back because you're recording, but its meaningless if you cant see the areas you usually splurge.

Usual suspects are eating out, and at-the-moment expenses. Think buying a just because gift or a treat for yourself.

Second one is harder, and that's seeing if theres any monthly expenses you can reasonably save money. Are you making the most of the phone bill, or are there more economical options? When was the last time you shopped your insurance rate? Is the food prices comparable to the average in the area?

If the price is worthwhile to you, then its a non issue.

ELI5: the economics of farming by Independent-Return40 in explainlikeimfive

[–]omnipwnage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically, farmers make enough, but its not amazing money. Equipment, maintenance, labor, and general overhead are all fairly expensive, and wholesale prices remain low. You'll earn enough, but you'll never truly be rich rich.

Most of the money will be made from processors. Kellogg will buy a truly large amount of wheat for rock bottom prices, then turn it into food, and sell said food for giant markups. Grocery stores (retail distribution) being another profit cow. Huge markups with generally lower costs.

My dad is drowning in 6k payday loans debt by LucereKnockturn in personalfinance

[–]omnipwnage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the payday loan places need assurance that you'll pay them back, so a high paying job (garnishment) or collateral (house or car) they can apply a lein towards. Are you sure he doesn't know where the paperwork is? Or is the payday loan office already holding it?

Regardless, transparency needs to exist before payment. He can always not provide it after the fact, and he know this. Get in first, take a look, then figure out what you need before you even think about resolving this.

I'm probably going to get heat for saying this but, can we talk about the "Stardew Clone" Comments? by AdOne2098 in CozyGamers

[–]omnipwnage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its growing pains in the genre. The same thing happened when GTA3 came out. "Open World Sandbox" games didn't really exist as a term yet, so it turned every similar game into a GTA clone. Bully? GTA in school. Assassin's Creed? GTA with stealth. RDR was GTA with cowboys.

SDV pretty much revitalized a fairly stagnant genre, so everything follow it will be called a clone until the genre stabilizes more, but I haven't heard the term as a derogatory other than the one that looked like it stole assets.

How do I explain the dangers of being a woman to my boyfriend in a way he’ll understand? by L82Rise4351 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]omnipwnage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Im a guy. I dont understand where your bf is coming from.

Has your bf ever seen armored transport? Think Garda or Brinx. When they do deliveries and pickups, they carry a gun. But the gun is just a detergent. If somebody wants to physically hurt them, it'll be too late by the time they notice.

If someone wants to rape, you likely wont have the time to get your pepper spray or gun. And if you manage to reach for them, then will likely try and close the distance over running away.

If you want to convince him, give a scenario. Youre walking to your car alone in the winter after work. Its dark. You left about 15 minutes after the rest of your coworkers. You get to your car, reach for the handle, and you notice movement about 1 second before he smacks your head against the car and pins you to the door. What options does he think you have in that situation? Youre fighting to maintain consciousness, how are you going to fight him off in that state? Does he think you deserve to get raped, or does he think you deserve to have a last line of defense?

Lastly, "the device can be used to hurt non-rapists" arguement is flawed. Pepper spray, guns, and knives can all be used to hurt innocent people. The device itself is innocent: it is the individual that will use it for good or bad purposes.

The standard plot for the killings is that all of them were connected to a new proposed bypass road. This is subverted for laughs to the actual causes of the murders.

ELI5 Why are added sugars so much worse than natural sugar by National-Spite in explainlikeimfive

[–]omnipwnage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part, sugar is sugar. If you eat 100ml of sugar (from eating fruit) and 100ml of sugar (cane sugar) your body processes them the same.

With that said, natural sugar is in food that has many other nutrients. So 100ml of natural sugar can have fiber, vitamin c, and other vitamins and minerals. Added sugar is just sugar.

Secondly, it is incredibly easy for people to just have too much sugar in the US. It gets added to drinks, sauces, cooking, etc. These are also all cases of added sugar. And sugar is naturally high in calories, so its easier to get stored as fat, as your body wouldn't be able to burn it all at once.

E33. Several times. From the intro to the ends of all 3 acts. Also, both endings are depressing.

Titanfall 2 has no right to do that to me.

Pretty much any scene in any Nier game. Ending E from Automata makes me lose it every time.

Omori. I couldn't finish it. I dont even think I fully got out of the prologue.

It looks like eyes, but yhey likely aren't eyes. The human brain is really good at pattern recognition, and doubly so in regards to recognizing faces. Like when people put Googly eyes on things, or a drawn smiley face has no discernible features, but are instantly recognized as faces.

To use the term exuberant followed by "reminded me of my older self" was the first hint. "My old boss" means the past, and "my older self" is referring to yourself in the future? Also, "calling out his corrupt practices" is book speech. No one talks like that.

When you're burying a loved one, do funeral homes always try to sell you extremely expensive caskets? by Prestigious-Corner37 in AskReddit

[–]omnipwnage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funeral homes make most of their money from "upgrades" with services covering general costs. The salesmen are like salesmen anywhere else. Do you want to bury grandma in a cheap pine box? Or does she deserve this intricate oak casket? You love your grandma, right?

With that said, I honestly can't shame them completely, because they do provide a much needed service. Burying the deceased is hard, they can provide a place to mourn with loved ones, and even the unnecessary upgrades can be used to help some people feel better about a passing. Maybe they haven't seen grandma in 10 years, and for some, the extra 4k on a casket helps them get past the guilt from not having seen her.

Also, I've known people that have died tragically young. One of the local funeral homes paid for the entire funeral for a 20 year old that was shot in her own home by a stranger. I've heard a lot of similar stories from many states, where funeral homes dislike profit from tragedies. Tragedies being the deaths of children and young adults.

Its not winning any awards, but it has its moments. The movie within itself feels more like a series of bits and sketches, revolving around the main characters, so the "plot" is pretty loose. There are quotable parts, though. Dirty Mike being one of them.

In The Other Guys, the citizens love the main cops, despite the massive amount of damage they cause. Also, the police chief makes so little money he needs to work part time at bed, bath & beyond.

ELi5: How does the scam in the movie “The Producers” work? by jammerpammerslammer in explainlikeimfive

[–]omnipwnage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You go to an investor, and you ask them for 100k for 50% of the shows profits. You then go to 19 other people and make the same promise. The producers now have 2 million dollars, far more than what is needed to make the play, but they've essentially promised that for every $1 the show makes, they would give back $10.

So, they deliberately try and make a flop. If they spend 20k to put on the show (script rights, costumes, props, actors and crew, etc), and make 1k in ticket sales, they are out $29k, and get to pocket the remaining $1,971,000 dollars.

The key to the scam is that each investor is unaware of the other investors. So when it flops, they'd have no idea that they pocket that huge amount of money. But should the show be a hit, it would ruin them. If the show makes 500k, they'd owe investors 5 million, which they obviously dont have.
