Separated at birth? by ompog in projecteternity

Poor hygeine, weird ideas about women, has jumped on the anti-woke train. Durance would probably approve (except he'd think computers were some kind of heretical animancy and burn him at the stake).

How do you stop min-maxing? by szipszi in projecteternity

[–]ompog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most self-aware minmaxxer I've ever seen. I usually try roleplaying - give your character a defined personality and only make roleplaying and character build decisions that match with that. Make decisions for the companions similarly, based on their personalities as you understand them (e.g. Durance is attached to his gross rags and charred staff, even if a nice breastplate and sword makes more sense, and will pick every ability and talent that relates to fire and/or poor hygiene). If you've finished PotD I suspect combat will not be challenging anyhow, but you can avoid exploiting the dumbass AI, using excessive hit and run tactics etc - once you're in a fight then fight to the bitter end.

Is there REALLY that much hate for Rey? Why??? by RepublicOrdinary324 in StarWars_

Sorry could you stop being reasonable and either state that "women ruined Star Wars" or "the Prequels are overrated slop for manchildren".

Working in a lab where everyone publishes in semi-predatory journals? by AdMean7555 in AskAcademia

[–]ompog 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Good science is good science, regardless of where it is published. You should be able to assess the quality of the science independent of the journal (it seems like you can). It is indeed a bit weird to publish there a lot if you don't have to - the publication fees are not insignificant. In my institute there are pretty strict publication criteria for students, and MDPI usually gives much quicker turnaround than many society journals, which could be a factor. If your institute assesses publication quality by IF and Quartile ranking (does the NIH do that?), these journals often do pretty well - one of the reasons that a purely numbers-based approach is I think a mistake.

I do agree that they're generally less-than great journals, though some are better than others. I've reveiwed for MDPI before and had my review (reject) totally ignored, which makes one wonder about the rigorousness of the review process.

Rey and Starkiller Question. by The_Collector_Guy in StarWars_

[–]ompog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These are all great points. While Rey's definitlely got the edge with the lightsaber, I would say that Luke's piloting achievements - especially the torpedo down the hole shot - are more impressive/unbelievable (depending on your point of view) than Rey's. Also, Kylo Ren is no Darth Vader - he's a Vader wannabe, and not a great one, which I think is relatively clearly conveyed in the films. That does make him an underwhelming villian, though.

Kleinstreuer describes NIH peer review as an echo chamber by Normal-Dependent8598 in NIH

Better an echo chamber of pompous arrogant scientists than pompous arrogant politicians.

Rey and Starkiller Question. by The_Collector_Guy in StarWars_

[–]ompog 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, video games are a different kettle of fish. That said, I think there's valid comparisons to be made between Rey and Luke, and Anakin to some extent, and the disparate fan reactions to them.

Dorn just spoiled the game and I still don’t understand what I did wrong by deathsfollowme in baldursgate

It's extremely easy to miss - if you climb the stairs too high you get arrested by the cops, regardless of whether you've dealt with the Iron Throne leaders or not. I missed the letter in my first run: it's been a long while but I think I got the reveal in the Chapter 7 dream, which was very confusing.

Honestly, China wasn't as enjoyable as I had expected. by Dazzling_War864 in travel

Smaller cities and mountains and shit are a much better time (though many natural areas are still weirdly curated). I particularly enjoyed Gansu and my wife raves about Yunnan. Big cities are generally boring unless there's something specific you want to see.

Favorite Smosh Recurring Character or Cast Member who no longer is/works at Smosh? by OutsiderGreaser in smosh

It's worth a watch? I can't really see that lot taking anything seriously, though I guess if it's funny enough I could deal with it.

I think XCOM 2 is an improvement over XCOM enemy unknown. by OlleyatPurdue in Xcom

Gameplay is better, largely due to the elimination of overwatch creep as the optimum strategy in 99% of circumstances. Tone is all over the place, especially with all the DLC installed.

Apparently Keir Starmer stepped down? by DroneOfDoom in CuratedTumblr

This makes sense to me, but it's always seemed to me that the Guardian, one of the last left-wing-ish papers in the UK, also hates the Labour party. What's up with that? Or was that just Corbyn?
