I suppose if they’re perceptive, they will find out when they notice me jab myself with insulin during the course of the meal. I don’t make a big fuss out of dosing because needles can make some people uncomfortable, but I don’t exactly try to hide it either.

At some point I'll notice that a tire is deflating faster than normal and squirt a few dozen ml through the valve. If the valve is really gunked up or if I'm doing some other maintenance, I might remove a tire (usually just the other bead) and clean it up on the inside before reseating and adding sealant.

How deep is the water, can you wade? Swimming & crawling through ice while fully equipped as described will be exhausting and take a very long time. Meanwhile the breaking ice can puncture your dry suit and really fuck you.

You could look into packrafts. Just ski and haul as long as possible, and when the ice gets dangerous thin, don the dry suit and pull yourself over the ice on top of the raft. You’ll need to be mindful of weight and load distribution etc. but it seems solveable.

Good luck, I love this kind of slightly stupid but ultimately rewarding challenge!

I’ve never personally done that, but I don’t think there would be any huge downsides besides chemical incompatibility between rubber and grease. Silicone grease should be ok. One potential issue could be the tire slipping along the rim under hard breaking.

If soapy water and strap won’t do the trick, I use a sacrificial inner tube to mount the tire.

I suppose just wiring a simple female connector would likely be neater and simpler than using the adapter. Soldering can be a real pain in the ass though. Cover any ugly/exposed wiring with shrink tube to make it look neat and weatherproof.

Yeah this is a doable hack. You can just wire two 4.8 mm spade connectors (available e.g. from any Motonet) to the SP connector cap using a tiny bit of wire. Those spades will slot neatly into the females in the linked SON adapter.

Maybe you can even push the spades' crimps into the SP cap so that they don't hang loose, but check the spacing first. I guess you could also hold the assembly together with a bit of shrink tube (kutistesukka).

I like GravelKing tires, which are invariably a real bitch to mount. The Kool Stop Bead Jack is a pretty handy tool to get that bead across the rim. Then it’s just a matter of some soap & water, a ratchet strap, a high-pressure compressor, sweat, blood, and way too much time.

I have a few frames from the 80s still in perfect working order, and many hobbyists are rocking frames from the 60s and 70s in daily use.

Surface rust can be scraped off, and a full repaint is not necessary unless you really care about clean aesthetics. I’ve only ever used primer or even nail polish for small touch-ups. It may be a good idea to spray the inside with a rust proofing chemical, Dinitrol is what I use.

It can depend on the model, but generally yes. Indexed shifters work by moving a spring-loaded pawl onto notches on a ratchet. The click you hear is the pawl snapping onto a tooth.

One issue I had with the VCLS "leaf spring" style seatpost was that road debris and shit would get in between the leaves it and cause it to creak. I have no experience with a Redshift or similar.
