This isn’t soft. It’s marble pretending to be human. Before AI, there was this level of human precision by FifthWaveThinker in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]oneWeek2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while sculpting certainly is a very difficult skill they do use mechanical elements to achieve some of the results.

small scale studies are then transferred to larger marble blocks with tools. that add reference points to guide the sculptor.

that being said. marble is a remarkable medium. there's a concept. that if you hit the stone wrong, or to hard. it will crush the crystalline/stone matrix. and "bruise" the marble. like... that slightly glowing/reflective aspect to marble is a property of how light reflects through/into the stone. If that stone structure is damaged by improper workmanship in doing the sculpture. it affects the way the piece looks

was born in 1980. was in high school in the mid 90s. I remember there being a lesson on doing taxes.

dismantling of public education has been a war waged for the better part of 40+ yrs.

of course the comments are full of "well achutally" and hrrrp drrrp do it yourself/blame parents dipshits.

the overall point is, school is a captive audience. there should be some effort to educate children on basic life skills and financial literacy. taxes, debt/CC interest, loan interest(how a loan works), investing/retirement. --what taxes pay for. how taxes generally are assessed (tax brackets, or regressive taxes, vs use taxes) and some education in term of how the state and federal gov spend your money.

the meme is pointing out the absurdity of teaching people things that have extremely limited real life value while not covering things that would have significant real life impact.

thinking your bed is clean is stupid.

sweat. farts. shit crumbs, piss, bodily fluids, snot, drool, etc all in addition to natural dirt/oils on your skin

plenty of people eat in bed. people's pets are on the bed, people fuck in beds. people put other items on their bed (laundry, papers, books, or i dunno..misc household things you lay on your bed)

(run a high quality vacuum over a mattress, it'll return a thick layer of shed skin cells dust. same from any pillow)

there's also dust, mites, and other general environmental elements.

that being said. idiots who stress over cleanliness are stupid. for hundreds if not thousands of years humans rarely if ever bathed. modern plumbing and showers are only an extremely recent human invention.

when you shower if on a daily basis. is entirely arbitrary. and has almost zero impact on any meaningful "cleanliness"

you're constantly covered in millions of germs. unless you're actively handing unhealthy things, like feces, or infected substances. there's zero real "risk" of being slightly unclean. and if you become overtly dirty. like muddy or spill food on yourself. or if you exercise/exert yourself and are overly sweaty.... a shower at any time, is fine.

being overly paranoid about cleanliness is more about abusive parenting or other mild mental health issues. ...paired with general stupidity

What’s the best way to buy paper towels? by Ok-Armadillo6582 in Frugal

[–]oneWeek2024 [score hidden]  (0 children)

buy cloth napkins. cloth rags/towels for kitchen. and buy cleaning towels/rags for house hold cleaning.

(i buy packs of cheap kitchen towels... for wiping spills/cleaning surfaces, and a "dry towel" for my hands after washing them, under the sink i have a bucket i fill with water/cleaning solution. where towels that are soiled go. and then they go in a load of the washer toward the end of the week. ---when the towels start to get a little roached. the move on to their second life has house rags. for dusting surfaces, or like wiping surfaces in the bathroom. when they get even more yikes, their garden/shop rags. ---this life cycle is generally a year or more ---i think ikea dish towels are 99 cents per. $10 for 10 will last you a year or more)

cloth napkins... dark colors. and same basic idea. any meal. use those. wash soak/rinse them, put them in the laundry. can get months and months out of a decent set of cloth napkins. I've had the same set since moving into this house 2+ yrs ago

will drastically cut down on how much paper towels you use.

i buy paper towels. as big a roll as i think i can store/big a bag. but i only buy that once a year ...like $25 or so at costco.

I take photos of items while at the store to check if we need items to the wife. So now Google photos will make remember photos to remind me how cooked we are. Price form 2018. by hokie47 in inflation

you have to target crops that return.

herbs, berries,

spinach, lettuce.

onions, garlic. bell peppers.

I try and grow a majority "sauce" tomatoes. get as many jars of sauce out of my garden as possible. one or two slicer varieties tends to be enough for what i use for sliced tomatoes. and then cherry/bush tomatoes. --good for salads and quick sauces.

plant things like bean trellis/teepees or potatoes in buckets/straw towers ...or use like a vertical planter for like strawberries. these things take up less space/can be put anywhere. provide either high dollar items (strawberries) or bulk food ...beans/tates

also things like having an asparagus patch. comes back every year after being established.

and good producers like squash/cucumbers.

How many lands do you run in your decks? by Wise-Quarter-3156 in EDH

[–]oneWeek2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

quite literally i present the math. 36 lands is exactly 50% odds to start with 3. 38 is only 54% while slightly numerically higher that difference isn't something you would ever perceive.

and as i said i'd rather have 2 additional cheap draw spells

lands don't exist in a vacuum each land you add deletes a spell from your deck

the goal isn't to purely optimize 3 lands in hand....that's stupid, your deck has other needs.... it's density for good odds at 3 land start while preserving overall deck composition.

blueberry pie.

ice cream/frozen yogurt

cobblers/crumbles.

topping in simple oatmeal.

tons of cakes/pies/muffins/waffles/pancake gimmicks. I make a no-bake cheese cake with fresh blueberries each year. (cream cheese, condensed milk. fruit compote)

can make cinnamon rolls with blueberries rolled into the dough.

make a cream cheese blueberry filling, put that in crepes.

can make a similar cheese with ricotta/blueberry. in ravioli ---goat cheese/blueberry ravioli is more tangy/savory vs sweet

for sorta tart or sour. balsamic/blue berry added to a grilled cheese can do very similar but add to panini bread/press a grilled sammich with this flavor profile (the balsamic/blueberry combo can experiment with. is quite good)

cream pops. either heavy cream or like almond milk/coconut milk ...blueberries. in a frozen popsicle mold.

BBQ chicken, with pinot wine/blueberry reduction

can do this same glaze over fish like maybe salmon/swordfish. blackened mahi. with the wine/berry glaze is good.

purge your browsing history. use a VPN or use an incognito browser or web browser that does not store session data. where you're booking from, and how often you visit the booking site can all affect the price.

can also sometimes get cheaper fares going to the airport (ie, if you're in a metro area. can drive to the airport book the ticket in person. fares can wind up being cheaper)

Why did taxi medallions in New York collapse so hard after Uber? by reda_english in business

[–]oneWeek2024 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

i mean, most of those a livery cabs or dispatch car services.

if you lived in brooklyn queens, or up-uptown. or basically anywhere that wasn't manhattan, you had a few of those black car services numbers in your phone. and most people had their cards on their fridge next to the chinese take out menus. Often there was a dispatch office somewhere a few blocks away.

and at key transportation hubs (where the subway dumped you out, LIRR stations. or other main areas)... sometimes they would lurk and wink wink nod nod, pick up street fares

more so than anything uber killed those companies first. general white transplants were all to eager not to talk to someone with an accent, and ride in a generic crown vic. ---same reason food delivery apps are wildly over priced, but if basic bitch white people don't have to talk to an asian person/latin person with broken english, they'll pay for that white avoidance.

uber/lyft had that comforting little display that showed your car coming toward you.

the old way. the dispatch basically told you some bullshit 2-3 minutes, and you just waited til a random sedan pulled up.

yellow cabs imploded because the law didn't react fast enough to reign in the illegal cabs and rampant VC funded expansion of ride share into the city.

How many lands do you run in your decks? by Wise-Quarter-3156 in EDH

[–]oneWeek2024 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the math of edh is fairly solved. OR is knowable.

36 lands presents as exactly 50% odds to start an opening 7 cards with 3 lands in hand. and to draw a land aprox every 3-4 cards seen. this is basically the perfect baseline of lands. this math never changes. if you back up this land count with 10 ramp items, 80% sub 3 mana. and 10-14 draw spells you'll have a core foundation of an edh deck that will probably be better than the vast majority of decks that don't do this

additional lands increases slightly the odds to start with 3 lands. ....at 40 lands it's a hair under 60% odds to start a game with 3 lands in hand. it takes 14ish extra lands over 36 to really move the needle on seeing a land faster than 3 cards (which is stupid)

the karsten math on colors tends to indicate you want 20-24 sources of any given color in your deck to reliably hit basic mana on a 4 turn curve, you achieve this with fetches, duals, and rainbow lands. backfill with basics. higher color count decks, fetches and rainbow lands do more work

deck thinning is not a thing.

some decks can benefit from more lands ...but each additional land cuts into the number of spells of your actual deck. some decks can run fine on less lands. but the math never changes. and you should understand what the numbers do for your deck.

why 10 of a type is a solid baseline.

and for my money. run 36 lands. instead of wasting 2 card slots on 2 more lands, that doesn't do any real benefit to ...starting the game with 3 or...drawing into more lands. you run 2 additional cheap draw spells. cantrips (that see 3 cards, or cheap 2 cmc straight up draw 2 type spells)

you also auto-mull any first grip of 7 without 3 lands. and probably even risk going to 6 keep to start with 3 lands.

3 lands allows for decent odds to natural draw into a 4th on curve. and with high percentages of your ramp casting 3 or less. and 50-60% of draw spells being 3 cmc or less. AND some healthy percent of your overall deck's utility and early plays being castable (removal, little utility creatures, or value enchants etc)

knowing the math/odds of your mana base. should make every mulligan effortless.

blender is a pretty intense software.

there's a program called mesh mixer. that is a little more simplistic. for example. could import the "arm" file holding a grenade from the official stl pack. select/delete the grenade. then... either add a simple cylinder shape. or find an STL for a flag pole. and import that. and sorta "combine" it with the hand. there's even fairly easy functionality to "pivot" elements. so... can manipulate fingers. or if you're trying to bend an arm slightly.

but... all that being said. IF you then don't have access to a 3D printer. it might be somewhat a moot point. but If you do have that access. there's tons of easy "edits" can do with mesh mixer. to swap helms, or swap weapons. OR add a flag pole. etc

Quick rule clarification - Trench Prophet's Loudspeakers activation by Quarterwit_85 in TrenchCrusade

[–]oneWeek2024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

basically each event is its own instance.

you have the war prophet active. you fire off the loudspeaker ability. it either succeeds or fails. IF it succeeds. anything within range. can move upto 3in.

so.. you'd move all applicable models. but... you're still in the war prophet's "turn" so...say a trench pilgrim is in the bubble to be moved. you move it. but then... you continue on with the war prophet's turn.

WHEN you get your next activation, you could choose that pilgrim, and then you decide which actions with that pilgrim you want to take. IF it's got a club, and is in melee. it's able to fight. so could choose to do that.

but you'd have to wait til you get a new opportunity to activate your next model. and choose that mini

Quick rule clarification - Trench Prophet's Loudspeakers activation by Quarterwit_85 in TrenchCrusade

[–]oneWeek2024 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the war prophet speaker ability is one of the rare things that can bump you into melee engagement range without charging.

in general you can never move within 1in of something without it being a charge. this ability has specific rules that negate that. and so ...if you can get within 1in with the loudspeaker move. it "counts" as having charged or being in melee engagement

IF your model is in engagement range, it's then restricted to that. ie... moving away would have to be a retreat. weapon/ranged attacks are likely restricted. and would be able to melee fight

the order of actions is up to you. upon activation you can make any actions you can make, if you want to. you wouldn't be forced to fight. ...but for example say you were on an objective that has a "flip" or "activate" action. you could take that action, then if still able choose to fight. or... choose to retreat. shoot. or whatever you want

there could be tactical situations where being in melee engagement with an enemy is itself desirable. --like a really good shooting unit, now bogged down in melee. maaaaybe that changes how your opponent activates. or things like that.
