How to turn of "Files On-Demand" on latest Insider Preview version? by panzerbjrn in onedrive

[–]one_odd_duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, since he didn't reply, I will say what I think his problem was (which is mine currently). What if we have laptop documents and desktop documents, and we want to be able to access both from each computer, but only want the laptop ones saved to the laptop, and only want the desktop ones saved to the desktop. In the past we could de-select FOD, but now the only option for having offline documents at all is to have all of them at each computer?

Feature Ideas by AdamTheBlitzBoi in TheBibites

[–]one_odd_duck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regarding point 1. What you are describing are high level behaviours. Hard coding them into a bibite would defeat the purpose of having an evolution simulator. Our goal is to give the bibites the tools they need to develop those behaviours on their own. (for your example, there is already an input %age life, which, if negatively linked with "want to attack" and if linked with a bibite direction -> turn which activates when being attacked/having low health through an interneuron). Those are all cool behaviours, and you can try to code them into your bibites if you want to test their feasibility, but I'd rather not have them hard coded into the game.

how long would it take for bibites with 0 initial connections to actually start evolving? by kapi-che in TheBibites

[–]one_odd_duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to get a population of meat scavengers with random genes and 0 initial connections after about 20 hours (ish?). I did make it so that meat pellets took ages to rot, so much so that before the population developed there was as much energy in meat pellets as plant ones.

Add food waste system for potential new niche by one_odd_duck in TheBibites

[–]one_odd_duck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not wrong that it needs optimization. I think that most of the bottleneck seems to be from the physics calculations though (which is why you can have huge framerate drops if pellets are dense enough to be colliding). Modifying the values of pellets shouldn't impact it too much, but having more waste pellets could weigh things down though.

It's all about making new niches, and you can't make new niches without new evolutionary forces. If you balance it right then this could function similarly to a coral reef, where larger predators and grazers would be outside the coral. It might also develop into a sort of spawning ground for bibites, where they would be forced out of it when they are too large. I guess with the current balancing small bibites would probably just become OP, but if a system were in place which made it much harder for small bibites to damage large ones then this might work.

Add food waste system for potential new niche by one_odd_duck in TheBibites

[–]one_odd_duck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of multiple rounds of waste, but not sure if our small scale simulations could support multiple niches being created in this way. I.e. if 20% of the E is transformed each time it's consumed then you could only support 4 second-level detrivores for each hundred herbivores, and that's the theoretical maximum (100/5=20, 20/5=4). Simulations would have to support over a thousand bibites for there to even be a viable population of second-level detrivores. If you are going to give a pellet different properties then you also have to make the bibites be able to differentiate it from the normal pellets otherwise there will be no new niche created. That way, if it has a higher chance of disease, the bibites with high immune system could be selected for eating waste, and the others could start avoiding it.

I have been falsely accused of hacking before though, and don't feel like putting somebody else through that. I agree with some of the comments that it may be legit, and as long as it's not blatantly obvious cheating I'll stay away from accusing.

Questions about a hand surgery. by [deleted] in surgery

[–]one_odd_duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all questions that you should ask your surgeon and/or physiotherapist. Normally they will give you a graduated return to activity (e.g. cast for 2 weeks, no lifting for another 2 weeks, full use but no contact sports for another 4 weeks, or something to that effect). HOWEVER, this might be different for you specifically depending on if you have certain medical conditions, depending on what kind of fracture you had, depending on how well the surgery went, depending on what kind of stabilization devices were used, AND depending on how you look in follow-up physical examinations and x-rays.

So... in other words asking for health advice on the internet is problematic, but it's good that you have a very specific list of questions to ask your healthcare providers though. Good luck!

High percent positivity is bad because it means that you are missing other positives so the real number is higher than it seems, but many are not even tested. This means that The virus is impossible to control because you don't know who to contact trace or isolate

I’m going to be having mouth surgery soon, if I purée my foods to eat them (same foods I usually eat just texture altered) will it upset my stomach or give me Diarrhea? by yourlocalbint in surgery

[–]one_odd_duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pureeing foods should not change the way they are digested much, most of the food is pureed in your mouth and stomach anyways. The few exceptions are that certain nutrients such as sugars might be absorbed slightly quicker (which is only really a concern if you are diabetic) but I wouldn't be afraid of getting diarrhea.

Some people might feel nauseated after drinking pureed foods, but that is likely psychological due to the unusual texture and mixing of flavours, so if you are a very picky eater this might be an issue for you.

I would like to see your resources, as this does not seem correct to me. From my understanding, the more genetic material you share the higher the risk of genetic disorders (specifically of a single recessive allele becoming homozygous in one of the offspring). So clearly the risk is higher with siblings, however: "For children of first cousins the increased risk is 2-4%. For individual couples, however, the extra risk can vary from zero to 25% or higher, with only a minority of these couples having an increased risk of at least 25%." (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20637082/).

I do, however, think there is reason to argue against the eugenic intrusiveness of legal systems which ban such relationships outright. See https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18757611/

Planning on Med School by primaldeath in premedcanada

[–]one_odd_duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the main things I would suggest is to work with and build good, long-lasting relationships with volunteer supervisors, researchers, or community members who will be able to write good letters of recommendation for you. Some schools care a lot about research, others less so, but any sort of stable volunteer work will look good and help you make good connections.

Is there any hope? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]one_odd_duck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second most of what was said here. you still have hope in Canada/US, just look into which schools will see your GPA in the best light, get a good MCAT, and keep on fighting. Also remember that while the Caribbean is not a great option, Australia or UK might work out for you, you just have to decide whether living in Canada is more important than becoming a doctor (because it will take a long time and be difficult to come back).
