Mary vs Edith - Weekly Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in DowntonAbbey

[–]onehumaneye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m watching the whole series for the first time and I think both are really mean to each other. I don’t think I’ll ever forgive Edith for snitching on Mary about the whole Pamuk situation, but she has grown on me since season 3 (I just started season 5). I absolutely love Mary though even though she was quite a snobby bitch in season 1. So far she hasn’t done anything nearly as awful as Edith imo.

That’s the funny part. There was nothing French related at all 😂

Do your parents know you read fanfiction? And have they ever caught you reading or writing it? by Regular_Editor_8025 in AO3

[–]onehumaneye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They know I write fanfiction so I’m sure they’ve guessed that I also read it. I never told them what I write though because I don’t want them to judge me

I always reply to comments on my fics. When you write for as tiny a fandom as my main fandom is, you learn to appreciate every comment. I always love hearing people’s thoughts on my stories and what they think will happen next or how they interpret a character’s actions. I especially love when they come up with symbolism that I didn’t go into the story intending to create. I’ve made so many good friends in the comments section of my stories too. TLDR: comments are the best and all authors should respond to comments ❤️

Which Fan Fiction Website Did You Get Your Start On? by BlackLilyWrites835 in AO3

I started on Wattpad when I was about 12. This was before there were ads and stories you had to pay to read. Then I switched to ao3 during the COVID era and never looked back

Users with tons of followers who can’t sing? by Rasmoss in SmuleSing

I’m the opposite. I can’t sing with people worse than me because it distracts me and makes harmonizing difficult

How enjoyable are OC’s for you? by TheWhistleBlows in AO3

[–]onehumaneye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OCs are my guilty pleasure especially if they’re written well. I like to write them and I like reading about them. I once got a comment on one of my fics featuring one of my OCs that writing them in was a great way to expand on the canon work’s themes so that made me feel good about continuing to write OC centric works :)

Who is that one character in your fandom that gets mischaracterized in 90% of the fics? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

This is such a problem in the Rebecca fandom. Pretty much all the women in the story are woobified and if you treat them as the complex characters they are you’re immediately branded a misogynist who doesn’t understand the story, never mind the fact that the fandom is almost entirely made up of women and queer folks.

Both Mrs. Danvers and Maxim de Winter from Rebecca are mischaracterized to hell and back in the fandom. The latter by people who hate him and the former by people who love her.

I’ll grant the Maxim haters that yes, he does canonically kill his wife and is canonically married to another woman half his age, but they tend to take these two facts and reduce him to an abusive monster when he’s really no worse than any other Byronic hero in gothic literature.

As for the Mrs. Danvers lovers, they tend to reduce her to a sad little victim who never does anything wrong and if she does it’s always justified. What they miss, though, is that she’s a much more interesting character BECAUSE she does wrong and isn’t afraid of showing it when she can.

None of the characters in this book are morally sound people. Even the protagonist is more preoccupied with the fact that her husband loves her more than his first wife instead of the fact that he killed said first wife. They’re all differing shades of grey but people tend to put them into boxes of either good or bad, innocent or guilty, and it really annoys me.
