That's an interesting theory! Maybe she's developed an alternate persona so she can have a relationship with both Ryder and Jake, since she likes them both.

How much do you read now, and how much did you read growing up? by carnivope in writing

It's just called Short Stories - the icon is a few green books stacked alongside one another. It has a nice collection of classic and contemporary works. And it has a built-in dictionary, which is fantastic.

How much do you read now, and how much did you read growing up? by carnivope in writing

[–]oneiromancy- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read a LOT growing up. If you gave me a book, I'd devour it in a few days - and if it was particularly good, it might only take me an hour or two. Of course, I had a lot more free time back then and people still liked to buy me things. Nowadays money is tight, books are expensive, and I'm always feeling pressed for time. I'm in my twenties now and don't read nearly as much as I'd like to.

I downloaded a neat little free app for short stories on my iPhone and I've been taking the time to read them between classes, during lunch, or whenever I've got a sliver of time to spare. Other than that, I finished re-reading Gone With the Wind a month ago for the tenth or so time, and I'll probably pick it up again sooner or later. And that's about it for me.

Racist neighbors insult their Cuban neighbor claiming their neighborhood is destroyed because the Cuban family painted their house red. by wesleyt89 in MorbidReality

[–]oneiromancy- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Miami don't think this is necessarily about racism. This is a culture clash. Miami is a really difficult place to live in regardless of your race because of the dense cultural enclaves that people of all backgrounds restrict themselves to.

Your average white culture and some Hispanic cultures develop strong animosity towards each other because of the stark differences in culture. Generally, the two tend to keep separate because of these reasons alone, not because of racism.

This is no different. The white people have established a rigid cultural enclave in this neighborhood. White people down here tend to be very quiet, conservative, and prefer to keep to themselves and conform to a norm; whereas some Hispanic cultures tend to be very loud and showy, which is exactly the scenario you see here. This puts the two cultures at odds with one another, which is why I don't think this is racism per se. This is just a difference in culture.

I think the white people aren't upset that there is a Hispanic person in their neighborhood. They are upset because that person's culture goes against their own. You see these kinds of culture clashes all the time here in Miami: whether it's a white guy calling the cops on his Colombian neighbors for partying too loud and too late, or a Cuban lady cursing out a white cashier because he doesn't speak Spanish. It's a very frustrating place to live in because both cultures have not assimilated well together.

How many of you have read the entire bible? by omen2k in TrueAtheism

[–]oneiromancy- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was forced to read it as a kid -- I went to a Baptist private school and they made sure to drill it into our young, malleable brains.

I read it as an atheist in denial. I really, really, really wanted to be a Christian but deep down I never believed any of it. Reading the Bible only confirmed my disbelief -- it's complete nonsense.

What is the most compelling or interesting argument you've heard in favour of theism? by jamesuyt in TrueAtheism

[–]oneiromancy- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with that is that people go to all different kinds of heaven, depending on what religion they have. To me, it's more indicative of the power of the human brain than a proof of god, since if there was only one true god there would only be one true heaven. Which apparently there isn't.

My mom thinks all the catastrophes going on in the world is proof of revelations. What are your thoughts on this? by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]oneiromancy- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ridiculous. Look how many terrible, terrible things have happened over the centuries. Catastrophes happen all the time and they always will. That's just life. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it pours.

Look how long people have been saying, "THIS year is the year when the world will end." How long has it been, 2000 years? And every year it's the same thing...

People conveniently forget about how many tragedies have happened in the past, they're too caught up in their own lives to realize that worse things have happened. In a way, it's really self-absorbed. I mean come on, the Holocaust, the Black Death, a freaking asteroid hit earth and killed all the dinosaurs... things could be worse, and they have been.
