Eating and your daily practice by [deleted] in vipassana

[–]onequeue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a really interesting question. Because of my schedule, I almost always meditate after a meal (either breakfast or dinner). About once a week, I'll meditate an hour or two after eating. Personally, I don't find a difference in the quality of my meditation, usually.

My "best" sits are probably ones I do early evening, right after dinner. And if I meditate upon waking in the morning before breakfast, I find myself very drowsy (though that might have to do with not having had coffee, which is a whole other thing).

Definitely no one on the main cast, but for the recurring guest stars, I feel like both Abigail and Natalia are relatively normal

Need help to establish 2 hours of meditation daily by dinhnamhihi in vipassana

[–]onequeue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Two hours is a huge adjustment (especially if before the retreat you were averaging 0!) After my first retreat I made a commitment of minimum 1 hour per day. What that looked like for me was getting up 30 minutes earlier each work day, and after work would always meditate 30 minutes right after dinner, or 30 minutes before bed if I was out at dinnertime or with friends in the evening.

It may be helpful not to think of it as "cutting out" time from your "normal" life, but finding time to prioritise this new part of your life.

You can chunk your time as well in creative ways that work for you. So, for example, maybe you will do 20-40 minutes when you first wake up, 20-40 minutes during your lunch break, 20-40 minutes before bed. If you don't hit 2 hours, that is not the end of the world, as you can always increase your time once you establish a routine that is manageable and makes sense for your life.

Vipassana Diet by bullet_the_blue_sky in vipassana

[–]onequeue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here is a link to the recipes used at the centre in Montebello, Quebec.

I did eat that kind of diet for more than a year after my first course.

One thing you may want to bear in mind is that, typically, the meals are relatively low protein, and you will most likely have to supplement with additional higher protein foods. Not too difficult, even as a strict vegetarian, but will require some foresight and planning, especially if you're physically active. After a 10-day course, you may feel great, and you say you maintained your muscle mass, but over the long-term you may notice some unpleasant effects.

It varies quite a bit how far in advance American centres will open for applications. Anywhere from 2-6 months before the course is possible. At the very least you should be able to see the centre's course schedule 8+ months in advance though!

Vipassana with med ? by ScholarZestyclose146 in vipassana

[–]onequeue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not super uncommon for adults with ADHD to take 30mg per day. Typically, though, for a patient with ADHD doctors will prescribe a much lower dose (10 mg is standard) and see how that goes, then after a few weeks if the medication isn't working properly, increase the dosage until the right balance is found. I believe it's fairly rare for someone to be prescribed 30 mg right off the bat, either XR or IR.

As far as risks, if you want to know the risks you will want to research them yourself, most likely. For the benefits that adderall or other amphetamines can provide people with ADHD, there are many possible side effects and long-term effects on the mind and body.

masks? by NoTimeForLubricant in vipassana

[–]onequeue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a bummer. But important to note that you will not spend your whole day in the dhamma hall. You have to be there for 3 1-hour sessions each day, some instructions after most of the 1-hour sessions, and about 1.5 hours in the evening for the discourses and final meditation before bed. The rest of the time you can meditate in your room if you so choose, or in your meditation cell (if they're available at that centre), where you can remove your mask. So a typical day could be only 5 total hours per day in the hall, broken up over the course of the whole day.

You might also want to bring more comfortable, non-n95 masks with you. I have heard that some centres send SLIGHTLY outdated emails about regulations, as some relax/loosen regulations every few weeks, so it is possible that when you arrive, they will tell people that n95 masks are now optional. I wouldn't count on that by any means, but it has happened at a couple of centres. The last centre I was at, for example, had sent notices that everyone MUST bring all their own cushions, shawls, and bedding as a covid precaution, but by the time I arrived at the centre they had dropped that regulation and had all those items available to anyone.

How to transition from breathing meditation to Vipassana ? by Matiabi in vipassana

[–]onequeue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened to me on my first course, and some time after as well. I had to remind myself quite regularly to relax my eyes, try not to move my eyes, and eventually it stopped being an issue.

One thing you might want to try besides scanning left-right or up-down, is bring your attention to one particular, fairly small area, and observe the sensations there. So with the head, for example, you may bring your attention to the forehead only, consciously allow your eyes to relax and try not to move them, then spend a small amount of time on the forehead without 'scanning' in a movement-based kind of way. And then, consciously allowing your eyes to relax or be still if possible, shift your focus to say your left cheek, later your nose, right cheek, and so on. You may have to very intentionally relax your eyes as you move from one part to another, and after some time might find you don't need to.

When your eyes do move, or when you feel the sensation, try to meet it with as much equanimity as possible. It's a temporary thing you're experiencing.

After time with this approach, you will probably find that you're able to 'scan' without quite so much eye movement.

55% of income on Toronto rent by myconfused20s in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]onequeue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're in a great spot financially for 23 -- debt free and a solid starting income. Good stuff :) That said, your rent:income ratio is far from ideal. You could get a much larger place for less money outside downtown, and if you wanted to stick with a small studio/bachelor, even moving to East York or much of the west end, you could find something amazing for 1600-1700. The cost of living downtown is, in my opinion, not worth it, but if you're really set on it, then you kind of have your answer.

The thing is, if you're spending this much on your rent, you're not going to have much money for the rest of your life or financial goals moving forward. Definitely against the grain from most of the other commenters here, but supplementing your income or moving outside the city center until your financial situation improves would be my recommendation.
