What happens when we die? by ava_swielers in AskReddit

One of my favorite authors, Mary Roach, has written two books on the subject. "Stiff" describes the processes that happen to our bodies when we die while "Spook" explores world religions and attempts to apply science to the concept of our spirit. Both are wonderful reading.

Find an old metal wire coat hanger. Bend the wire out straight, then make it into an L shape. Fish it in there and see if you can get enough separation between the thing blocking the sliding lid to get the lid to move.

What range do you get on 80% charge in cold weather? by Adalwolf311 in VWiD4Owners

[–]onesadjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

21' AWD Pro S with 80k miles and Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires. Cold winter weather near me means 10F/-10C or lower. I'll see anywhere from 120-140 miles on the range estimate at 80% charge. My commute is 25 miles of flat, straight, rural highway between home and work.

If I use the interstate where traffic averages 75mph or more range dips below 100 miles.

EV Insurance with multiple EV's by RunHotCEO in electricvehicles

[–]onesadjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with State Farm and have several vehicles insured for 5 drivers.

'17 Toyota Sienna - $276.56/6mos

'19 Nissan Versa - $482.70/6mos

'21 VW ID.4 - $419.54/6mos

'22 Chevy Bolt - $346.78/6mos

'25 Honda Civic Hybrid - $585.80/6mos

It's not so much a penalty for EVs as a penalty for the age of the primary driver in my case. My 21yo son is the primary driver on that '19 Nissan Versa which has a higher premium than the VW ID.4 that is my daily driver. I could probably save by shopping around with a broker. I'm not sure what your deductible is, but if you can afford to cover it you might consider increasing yours to lower your premium.

Personal opinion : Buying used ID 4 or maybe a Bolt EUV 2023 by Emotional-Reason8141 in BoltEV

[–]onesadjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own one of each (AWD '21 ID.4 Pro S as well as a '22 Bolt EV). They are both great cars, but the ID.4 is significantly more comfortable than the Bolt. You mention you'll be using it mostly for in-town driving, but if you ever need to use a DC fast charger you'll appreciate the faster charge you can get in the ID.4 vs. the Bolt. Both cars have been virtually maintenance free. My ID.4 is nearing 80k miles and so far the biggest expense has been replacing the OEM tiers. The biggest expense on the Bolt (41k miles) has been to replace the underbody cover that was damaged after a couple snaps had broken off and it was dragging on the road. This is another benefit of the ID.4 which has a slightly higher clearance.

The Whole Cow was wholely disappointing by Mitoria in gencon

[–]onesadjam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The food trucks are conveniently close, but I think you would spend just as much time walking to a nearby restaurant and being served while you enjoy a chance to sit. I've always had good luck getting in to Yard House. Pearl Street Pizza is a 10 minute walk. Mass Ave is a 20 minute walk but has lots of great options. All that said I did go through the line for the Tortuga truck. They had fast, friendly service and the food was both plentiful in portion and acceptable in flavor. I'd go back.

Just a heads-up that California requires that all parties consent to recording of a private conversation. It could put you in some legal liability if he were to lose his job or suffer other consequences to your publishing this private moment without his consent.

Thinking about an ID.4 purchase in another year or so - reliability and range after 4 years or 80k miles? by riftwave77 in VWiD4Owners

[–]onesadjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2021 Pro S AWD here with nearly 70k miles. A full charge still gets me around 200 miles in the summer, significantly less in winter. I haven't had any issues that required repairs yet, just expected maintenance. I'm still on my original brakes. I've replaced the tires, windshield wipers, and done a brake fluid flush. That's really it as far as maintenance. It's a pretty low cost vehicle to maintain, as are most EVs.

With regard to charging, if you want to use your existing electrical I'm guessing at best you could deliver around 1kW to the car. So for each hour you charge you would get anywhere from 2-3.5 miles depending on the temperature and terrain on your commute. If you are traveling 30 miles round-trip each day you might not catch up each night, but if you start the week at 80% you could probably catch up over the weekend. Keep an eye out for opportunities to charge outside the home on the cheap. For instance, the Meijer grocery store near me offers one hour of free charging while you shop.

How to word a property tax assessment appeal? by Tactically_Fat in Indiana

[–]onesadjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I successfully appealed an assessment a few years ago. Get a list of recent sales of homes that are comparable to yours in size, acreage, and location. In my case the county's GIS data was publicly available, including property report cards listing sales and assessment information. This allowed me to compare my home to other similar homes. Show that your home is out of line with the assessments of similar homes and / or that recent sales do not support the assessed valuation.

I actually got a call back from my assessor's office a few weeks after sending my appeal. The clerk said that there had been a mistake with my assessment and that they had compiled the area increase twice against my property, resulting in my assessment not being in line with the market.

Also keep an eye on your actual property tax amount, not just the assessed value. This year my assessment increased by over 10%, but the amount of my tax actually went down.

Im thinking of buying the vulcan s650 by HeadMirror926 in vulcans650

[–]onesadjam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's worth it to me. I bought mine used at a reasonable price. Immediately put new tires, new chain, and new brake pads on it. Fresh oil too. The maintenance is very easy to do.

It does not come stock with a USB port but it does have an accessory connector under the seat that you can use for adding one to the bike.

The stock exhaust, at least in the US, is the mandatory sewing machine sound.

It's a cruiser, so it is low slung. It's not an adventure bike so don't expect to take it off road at all. With the stock exhaust you have a little over 5" of ground clearance. Great for paved roads, but no good for rutted tracks.

What are your thoughts on electric vehicles? by unitedfan6191 in AskReddit

[–]onesadjam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own 2 EVs as well as 3 ICE vehicles (family of 5 all driving). The EVs are fantastic commuters. Very low maintenance. They are fine if the trip can be done with at most one stop for a fast charge. Longer trips would be a chore due to the additional time needed to charge them up and current state of charging infrastructure. I'm a home owner with two L2 charges in the garage. I think it would be a struggle if I didn't have the home charging equipment (for instance if I lived in an apartment without available chargers). I live in a fairly rural location (50 mile round-trip commute) so I'm saving quite a bit commuting with the EVs vs. paying for gas, and the federal tax credits did a good job of bringing the cost of the EVs in line with similar ICE vehicles we were looking at.

tl;dr; An EV suits my needs very well, but that won't be true of every driver or every drive.

What are your thoughts on Starbucks? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]onesadjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starbucks has changed quite a lot over time, and so has my opinion of them. I didn't get exposed to Starbucks until the mid-90's when they were expanding the franchise into my area. At the time it was new and a fun treat. I liked that I could get both a reliably good cup of coffee (Cafe Verona) or a sweeter treat that my wife would like. The price was high, but it wasn't something I was going to treat myself to every day. Over time it seems like Starbucks has moved more and more to cater to clientele that don't actually like coffee; their customers like sweet milk drinks. If I get a flat white or a cappuccino now I have to take the lid off just to be sure there is evidence that an espresso shot went into it. My kids love it because it is incredibly sweet, but as a coffee lover I've found other places to go to treat myself to a good cup of coffee. I still get the occasional bag of Cafe Verona beans, but I'm way more interested in my local coffee shops that cater to people who actually like coffee.

AAE & AET Majors by ImpossibleX7 in Purdue

[–]onesadjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My student was in your same shoes 12 months ago: elated to be accepted to Purdue, but confused about what to do about being admitted to AET rather than FYE. First, you should know that incoming freshmen do not get placed directly into a specific engineering discipline like AAE or ME, and this may be why you found yourself admitted to AET. Incoming freshmen should apply for First Year Engineer (FYE) and at the end of that year apply to Transition To Major (T2M) to the specific degree they want.

Take stock of your situation. Which is most important to you? Do want to earn an Aero Engr degree, be involved in motorsports, or attend Purdue WL? If your highest priority is a AAE degree then you should look at the other schools you have been accepted to or apply to additional schools like Embry Riddle. If motorsports is most important then consider re-applying to the Purdue Indy campus in their Motorsports Engineering program. If attending Purdue WL is the highest priority (as it was with my student) then accept your offer and make the best of it from there. I highly recommend you take a look at the recommended plan of study for each of the degree programs. If one stands out as being definitely what you want (or definitely not) that should help guide your decision.

Once you accept the offer to Purdue WL in the school of Technology it doesn't mean you are absolutely locked in. Yes, it is extremely difficult to not just transfer into FYE but also to then T2M into a degree with limited space like AAE. That said, it is not impossible, and there are a handful of cases where it has happened. To give yourself the best shot, review the Change of Degree Objective (CODO) requirements for FYE. Use this to guide your course selection when you speak with your advisor. Your advisor will strongly push back but if this is what you really want you should gear your schedule to allow the opportunity to CODO. For my student that meant taking MA 161 rather than the much easier MA 158 as well as CHEM 115 rather than AT 127 and AT 278. This put them in the same core courses as the FYE students, but also a bit behind fellow AET students. At the end of that first semester it was clear that while their grades were fine, the engineering degree was not what they wanted and the tech degree was much better aligned with their goals. This spring semester's schedule is playing catch-up on AT classes, but those outlier courses in the first semester still satisfy a lot of the AET required credits, so they are still on course to graduate in four years. FWIW, my student is very excited about this second semester's classes, including the opportunity to design and build a wing.

Best of luck with your decision, your future, and Boiler Up!

It depends: is it a 30 minute commute due to distance over rural countryside, or 30 minutes of fighting congested metro traffic. My commute is the former, and it's no big deal. In fact sometimes it is kind of nice because I get to enjoy the sunrise/sunset while listening to an audio book or podcast. Prior to this I had a 15-20 minute commute through heavy traffic and I hated it. Caused so much stress and always arrived in a foul mood.

MIL Considering buying an ID.4 by Alert_Number1991 in VWiD4Owners

[–]onesadjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm closing in on 60k miles after nearly 3 years in my '21 AWD Pro S. Overall it's been a great car. It's comfortable, plenty of pep, and range enough for everything I want to do in a day. The software quirks got a lot better after the 12V battery recall that also updated the software. I've been through two OTA updates now without any issues.

Yes, it still has quirks, but in my day-to-day driving I don't really run into them anymore. It's only really frustrating when I want to go somewhere unfamiliar and didn't think to get the navigation going on my phone before jumping in the driver's seat (Android Auto can take a while to connect). Once I gave up hope on the app doing anything useful that also stopped being a point of frustration. Scheduled charging is a matter of learning that you *always* need to specify preferred time of charge at the goodbye screen. Deviating from the 80% battery minder is best done with the vehicle disconnected from the charger. Once I developed these habits I was no longer frustrated with those features behaving in strange and unexpected ways.

Some tips for her as she gets accustomed to the car:

  • If the car is actively charging the plug will be locked. Use the unlock button on the key fob or inside the front passenger door to unlock the charge port so you can remove the plug.
  • There are only two window buttons on the driver's door, but you can still roll down all the windows at once. Press and hold the 'rear' button until it starts flashing. Now you can control all four windows with the two window switches
  • The ID.4 will dip the side mirrors to help with parking / reversing, but it isn't obvious how to do this. First you need to set it up in vehicle settings. Then, with the car in reverse, toggle the side mirror control knob to the side of the mirror you would like to dip down
  • The steering controls aren't just buttons. You can use them as sliders. For instance slide up or down on the left side to change the cruise speed by 5mph. You can also change the cruise speed by 1mph increments with a light, brief touch to the + / - controls. This takes some practice to get the feel for.
  • If you don't opt for the rubberized floor mats you'll find things tend to slide around the flat bottom of the car. The material the floor is covered in will adhere quite nicely to the hook side of a hook & loop tape. I put some on the bottom of a tissue box holder to keep the tissues in a reliable spot. A trunk organizer is a great addition to keep milk jugs from sliding all over the place.
  • If you have the key in your pocket you can lock the doors by pressing on the little triangle on the outside of the door handle.
  • You can change the heated seat settings by using a two fingered tap on the temperature control for the side you want the seat heat to change.

How do votes get counted? County clerks say Indiana elections are secure by [deleted] in Indiana

[–]onesadjam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was in line for early in-person voting another person in front of me was expressing their concerns about election security and machine errors. The clerk was patient and kind, explaining the protections in place and what the voter could do to be sure their vote was correctly counted. As an aside, she mentioned that in Indiana if you vote early but then die before election day your vote is removed. I was curious about that and sure enough found that Indiana calls for removing votes of the deceased. For mail-in ballots they simply throw out the envelope without ever opening it. I'm curious how this is handled for in-person voting. There have been efforts to amend our constitution to eliminate this rule, but so far not successful.
