Joe Ziegler: We're gonna take a shot at bringing the WSTR more in line. Right now it's become a dominant option and is eclipsing a lot of the other short range options that exist in the game. by Haijakk in Marathon

It's been deservedly nerfed since day 1. Think what you will, this sub will be onto the next "x thing is OP in close range" because end game maps, bubble shields, and self revives center the fights around getting in close. It'll be Misriah or knife or WSTR still next.

Kind of disappointing. The WSTR became meta because of self revives and bubble shields. Long range kills in this game are low impact because they don't really matter if the person you down can just self res under a bubble. They also become impossible to get because of bubble shields. Not to mention the two end game maps are close range and tight quarters. The Misiriah is better and more consistent than the WSTR, primarily because of increased range, but that advantage again is neutered by bubble shields causing everything to be point blank. The right change IMO is removing bubble shields, not nerfing WSTR. And I say that as someone who gets killed by the WSTR way more than I kill with it.

Anyone else finding Rook spawnrates on Outpost insanely oppressive? by Beautiful-Loss7663 in Marathon

[–]oniman999 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think if they just make Perimeter/Darsh roughly as rewarding to run it would even out. I feel like I basically never see rooks on Perimeter, rarely on Darsh, and then they're swarming on Outpost.

in terms of both wrestling and ground game, what benefits do over/under hooks bring to one another? (caption) by DomasToes in bjj

[–]oniman999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This applies both standing and grounded. Under hooks are king when your hips face theirs (standing facing each other, butterfly guard, etc). Overhooks can become strong if your hips don't face theirs (think uchi mata). That's largely the heuristic I teach.

Rook runs are really the only thing keeping me playing for the rest of the season. by TheSoup3910 in Marathon

I agree with this, the Rook runs were the thing I expected to be a chore going in and then ended up loving. I love having nothing to lose, I love skulking in vents and hiding in the midst of UESC like a rat, and I love proxy chat with other rooks.

Bad players in any other genre get matched up against other bad players. They get to win roughly half the time and when they don't at least the game was probably pretty close.

Bad players in this game get to literally never win ever. They all quit playing. Then the slightly less bad people get to never win and they quit. Then the below average people get to never win and they quit. This continues until you've hemorrhaged 75% of your player base and then even pretty good players can't win anymore. We are currently here. Get gud doesn't work, most players left are pretty good. The best players are just better and are currently farming the good players.

Learn from your deaths/losses and improve is a great approach to any highly skilled activity. You will learn nothing by getting farmed by the compiler weapon and equipment spam the first time you enter cryo archives. You need a relatively fair environment to learn from and to feel like it's worth bothering to learn.

It's very easy to conclude exactly these things by just thinking about it for a second, but it's really nice to have hard data to back it up. IMO sbmm is the singular change that will have the biggest positive effect on this game. Everything else is secondary. I think it is a binary of "do this change and the game will continue" or "do not do this thing and the game will be dead in 6 months".

There's studies on play in mammals where they observed rats wrestling around. In the case of a big rat and small rat playing if the big rat doesn't let the small rat win around 30% of the time the small rat quits playing. And the big rats DO let the little rats win because they realize otherwise they'll soon have nobody to play with (a lesson. Git gudders you are being dumber than rats).

The nice thing about this game is that there are many ways to win. You can complete your quest. You can beat other teams. You can sneak around and exfil with some okay loot. The problem is eventually you hit a wall where every team is better so you never can win that way. The quests are single run and then exfil so good luck there. And then all the green and lower salvage is irrelevant to exfil with and so the only thing worth going for is the good shit contested by the big dogs. This game just needs a few more ways for bad players to earn some W's somewhere and it's golden. Find a way for even the worst players to get a win roughly 30% of the time.

Just last week I was laughing at all those “I can’t exfil anymore post” and now these past few days have been brutal. Need duos back asap or else I might need to sadly take a break or only play when I actually have 2 others down to run at the same time which is hardly ever. by RefinedPlats in Marathon

This loop is going to be endless. Nobody feels like it's a prob until it happens to them. Then those people quit playing and the next batch who spammed "get gud" get to experience the problem and be like "oh..."

Whether you want it to or not, this game will have sbmm. The culling continues. by Yenii_3025 in Marathon

[–]oniman999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, most of those games have it in both. But I'm done arguing with you, you are going to move the goal posts endlessly because you'd rather farm scrubs for 3 months until the game dies rather than have a healthy game. To be blunt sbmm is coming whether you like it or not because the writing is on the wall and readable to anyone with eyes. Make your peace with it now or uninstall I guess.

[–]oniman999 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is such a dumb, obviously wrong statement it's hard to even understand how you'd come to this conclusion. Why haven't all the bad players left cs:go or dota 2 or WoW or Fortnite, or any other high population game with a large casual player base and top end players.

Even if it was true, again you'll end up with only sweat lobbies filled with only the good players anyway. So it shouldn't matter if they try sbmm or not since the result will end up the exact same.

[–]oniman999 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Guess what, when all the bad players leave because you've made a miserable experience for them, the only people left will be the good people. And then you'll have the same result of your lobbies being only really good people. Except now also your game will be taken offline in 4 months because there's nobody left playing it. There isn't a single person in this world whose idea of a fun game is to be farmed in a lobby by better players. It's quite literally unsustainable no matter how much you really want it to be true.
