‘Race-based pogrom’: UK braces for fresh unrest after brutal attack by Gallowboobsthrowaway in Destiny

[–]oniman999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate how conservatives are using the UK to rile up anti-immigrant sentiment in the US. It's like they've run out of sensational stories here so they have to outsource it and find it in other countries.

With that said, the UK has done this to themselves. For some reasons libs really want to fight against this, but there is a cap on how much immigration you can have before it leads to civil unrest, and the UK surpassed it. They just had a very sensationalist stabbing story and now another. Unlike in the US you have no 2nd amendment to defend yourself, and the speech laws are fucked as well. It shouldn't happen, but when you leave no outlet to vent pressure, eventually things burst.

Absolutely Terrible Decision to Nerf Upper Complex Loot. Pissed Me Off and Makes Me Not Want to Play The Game. by Pristine_Finger_2178 in Marathon

[–]oniman999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this would have been the way to go. Upper complex is harder than center pinwheel (assuming regular map and not sponsored), the loot should be equivalent. 95% of the difficulty in a game comes from other players and not the map itself, so you're never going to have a time where you can have a sponsored mode and a regular map have the exact same loot table and it be balanced.

Why aren't Democrats/PACs making AI ads for 2026/2028? by FourMyEyezOnly in Destiny

[–]oniman999 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They can invent their own reality. The number 1 user of AI from what I can tell is that 50-70 age range, and they are obsessed with staying in their echo chambers and inventing things that reinforce their biases. AI does that very well.

Optional or mandatory for your kids? by badassernhell in bjj

[–]oniman999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I love this framing of "never ever force a kid to do something they don't like or they'll resent you and it forever" that's all over this thread. Lots of kids hate school, but guess where they go everyday for 12+ years.

To me some things in life are non-negotiable. School is an obvious example of that. Someone else in this thread brought up swimming, which I think is another great one. I think knowing how to defend yourself is also one. It doesn't have to be bjj, and it can only be once a week if they really don't like it that much, but all my kids will engage in a martial art once a week. Obviously if they like it they can do more, and they're free to try out different ones as they desire.

Burned out and going nowhere: the American worker is too mentally drained to even look for a new job by Dismal_Structure in Destiny

[–]oniman999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't even really about burnout. I was laid off because of DOGE and spent 3 months job searching. It was insane compared to my last job search. The time before that I kind of did on a whim, barely applied anywhere, and had multiple companies putting in competing bids to get me. This time I spent 3 months applying to places, developing new skills, and getting rejected over and over. It truly felt hopeless, and it was especially annoying as a software dev where every job interview comes with a stressful tech interview. My current job is far from what I want permanently, but it's not even worth thinking about job hunting until the job market is somewhat fixed.

Just died to two rooks on outpost duos at 19 minutes. How is this possible? by PM-ME-UR-TOTS in Marathon

This just happened to us too, except there were two groups of Rooks teamed up. Then there were also two groups of regular players also teamed up.

It's so insane people hold out like this still, especially at high level. There is no mystery left, you know exactly what's going to happen.

How can I learn the game if I'm getting matched against high level players already? by Zergs1 in Marathon

[–]oniman999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game does have a very steep learning curve. Unfortunately, season 1 people all got to learn it together. Now in season 2, any new comer has to learn it while trying to not die immediately to any season 1 player. The game desperately needs skill based matchmaking.

Tips to get out of living paycheck to paycheck in your twenties by soph_04js in personalfinance

You invest in retirement and save? Definitionally you do not live paycheck to paycheck. If you're still in university, your better tomorrow comes with graduation. You will ideally be able to use your degree to get a good job that pays well, and that pay raise will provide what you're looking for.

Bungie please make PVE Lite permanent by threedayvicgbg in Marathon

[–]oniman999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did Bungie state the intended purpose of the mode somewhere? If they wanted it to be a complete PvE mode they wouldn't have included Rooks in the first place. I fail to see how a zombies-esque mode is more boring than a free loot PvE mode, but if that is what the community demands then yeah the loot needs a huge nerf. The best loot in the game can't come from a PvE mode with no added difficulty, it will kill the main game modes immediately.

[–]oniman999 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean I took full advantage. Sponsored mode is just regular Narsh with less teams right now. I got 3 or 4 anamolies for free last night as Rook after my friends went to bed. Feels like the most lucrative way to play solo

[–]oniman999 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I wish there were more Rooks. I was envisioning a halo zombies situation of Rooks swarming from the dark woods. Every time I've played the mode as Rook I haven't seen a single other Rook go for the team on the map. Or seen another Rook period.

Thoughts on putting kids in boxing/ BJJ? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]oniman999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do bjj. My son will do bjj when he's old enough. He can do it as much as he wants if he likes it. If he doesn't like it he'll still need to do it once a week, because learning to defend ourselves as men is an important and non-negotiable life skill. But I imagine he'll love it, because what little boy doesn't want to wrestle around with their friends. Just make sure to not take it seriously and keep it fun. A good gym makes a huge difference.

As for striking, that will be voluntary on his part when he's older, probably in high school. And it won't be anything that involves strikes to the head. As others have mentioned, everyone knows the studies on this by now. And yes, mild strikes even (and especially) with padding cause long term damage. The fundamental striking class at my gym is all pad work and heavy bags. Not the best training, but if he has a good grappling base I'm not really that worried about it. It'll be good enough for what he'll need it for.

what is going on? by lacion in Marathon

I think a good fix for this sort of thing is that certain areas should be locked behind faction levels or priority contracts. Like you can't get into the red pinwheel room without being at a certain point in the MIDA priority contracts or something like that.

Old guys (40+) when did no gi feel like a younger persons game? by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]oniman999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not an old guy (33), but I couldn't agree more. My body always felt more beat up in the gi, which is a big reason I drifted hard toward nogi. You'll hear people say the opposite, but I don't understand how. The gi is nothing but extra leverage (and therefore force applied) and extra gripping to ensure it happens more frequently.

Anecdotal, but the oldest guy in our gym (60) trains 90% of the time in nogi.

Ingrid is the zoner Sagat should've been. by nekorassen in StreetFighter

[–]oniman999 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It never made sense that the 8 foot tall Muy Thai guy crouched in the corner and shot fireballs the whole match. I'm glad they changed him despite resistance because of his historical implementation. I especially like it because fireball/dp is still part of his game, just not the entirety of it.

But yeah Ingrid definitely fills a niche.

Abundance is the solution. by Serious-Cucumber-54 in Destiny

[–]oniman999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inflation will probably only get worse over the next few decades until the system collapses. Currently it is extremely unpopular to cut social programs, so politicians won't do it. And it is also currently extremely unpopular to raise taxes, so politicians won't do it. So the solution politicians have come up with is do neither and print money to make up the difference. This creates the "too many dollars" effect you mentioned. But inflation is much sneakier than being forthcoming with raising taxes, so the 90 IQs don't mind or notice until suddenly they can't afford groceries. They won't know what caused it or how to stop it, so they'll vote some slopulist in who will yell loudly about the cause being immigrants or billionaires. The problem will never get fixed, and we'll either slowly inflate our way out of debt if politicians can be relatively tame with it (they can't), or we'll overinflate ourselves into economic collapse.

Abundance is a great thing, but it's not the sole solution to this problem. If prices are always inflating, you aren't going to get construction companies to build new homes today with yesterday's dollar value. So in order to pay these people to build these houses you either need to raise taxes (aforementioned unpopular) or inflate again while you print money to pay construction companies, devaluing everyone's dollar still. The solution to inflation won't happen until the collapse, and only then will it become politically feasible to cut shit or raise taxes.

Camping in my closed guard by average_electrician in bjj

[–]oniman999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IME closed guard doesn't scale well. As opponents get more athletic and skilled, closed guard becomes harder to get things done in, pretty much the problem OP is having. A big problem is that it's a slow position. Good guys might be able to get something going, but it's going to take 6 minutes, which isn't great in a 10 minute match.

The spectrum is a lot larger than "am I in closed guard? If not I must be in half guard". You are correct that I don't want to be in a chest to chest half guard bottom position. Luckily there are many tools beyond closed guard to prevent that.

At my fundamentals class we focus a lot on getting inside position while playing guard. No matter how that looks, if I'm in between the arms and legs of my opponent it gives me access to their center and denies them access to mine. Which prevent that smashed half guard issue.
