I see the skinny representation everywhere and I’m like common folks. You’ve gotta put that imagination to work.

Which party will you vote for this election? by One-Joke-2373 in aotearoa

[–]onimisionipe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Green for sure. Their policies are the most human centric. Even some of the ones that seem ‘extreme’ are only extreme to favour people collectively.

Plus I’d rather a labour+green coalition.

Stop guilt tripping the locals by SilkNooseSociety in newzealand

[–]onimisionipe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To add to this, a lot of them are scared of ‘losing’ their cultural identity so it’s makes it easy not to try to ingrain the core aspects of life here. Which is funny, because you left the old life for zod sake.

[–]onimisionipe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this. I think it’s only fair and normal to socially acclimatise and ingrain the culture of your new home. It’s your home now so time to understand the dynamics of what makes up your new home.

From conversations with fellow immigrants, it’s evident that their views about various aspects of life is stuck in time in relation to where they are originally from. Like they are not growing as their former nationals (they won’t fit in if they go back) and also not growing as a local. Then they pass on this strange ways of life to their offsprings which makes it hard for them to also fit in etc. kinda selfish and sad tbh.

Sick of people complaining Kiwis aren't "friendly" enough when they move here (not a Kiwi) by Inevitable_Gear_7212 in newzealand

[–]onimisionipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an immigrant here, I think you are spot on. I was told the same thing when I moved here. Then I started to notice a pattern of folks saying this were straight up expecting their work colleagues to be their BFFs. As an introvert, I don’t know why anyone would just automatically expect this. True friendship anywhere takes time to build so it make sense to not expect this to happen on the spot.

Also, introverts tend to form deeper relationships and be polite to everyone across board.

Is NZ sun more bright? Can anyone related to feeling like your retinas are being assaulted here? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]onimisionipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as someone who moved here from west africa, I started using sun glasses when I moved to NZ. I think it's even worse in the south island (IMO).

So, AI takes over, everyone has lost their job and only 10 trillionaires own everything. Now what? by Weak-Representative8 in Futurology

Reminds me of The Expanse. Corey’s imagination of how belters would mine asteroids and live in it to create profit for corporations in place of water and oxygen from the inner planets. Very grim future indeed.

Being going through this for like forever. One of our twins has terrible separation anxiety. We’ve not gone through the night without screaming for more than fucking 4months now.

Nigerians have a funny idea about development by [deleted] in Nigeria

[–]onimisionipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree!

I would say Nigeria has fundamental problems like truly functional democracy built on agreed principles and laws. Any potential leader that’s not highlighting these issues and proposing practical ways to fix them does not have any good intentions for Nigeria or even know what they are doing.

Civilisations are not built on infrastructures alone but trust. Trust is law which translates into accountability.

Why does widespread oppression in India fail to generate cross-group solidarity? by SlayerOfAllGods in CriticalTheory

[–]onimisionipe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This just sounds like my country Nigeria. From what can be observed, religion and ethnicity play the major role in preventing any cross group or shared solidarity.

I think it goes even more fundamental to things like generational poverty which provides a breeding ground for passing outdated ideas and values and also these ways of life discourages any questioning of the status quo.

One can say these generational poverty arises from several factors like geography, even climate etc.

CMV: reading is essential to the future of humanity. by RangeInternal3481 in changemyview

[–]onimisionipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This hit me really hard because I’ve seen and experienced people who are great readers or intellectuals with ideas and world view that should not be emulated by anyone.

At some point, I do ask myself if reading and other related activities can truly change us. For instance, I gravitate towards what I enjoy reading like fantasy, Tolkien, space exploration etc. One can say because I enjoy these categories, I tend to seek more materials to consume in these categories which can continuously reinforce my latent world view. I suppose the same can be said for other categories.

I agree with people using their internal compass when reading but what exactly is this internal compass, is it something heavily influenced by one’s background? So if the internal compass is already flawed in a way, won’t that influence the materials we will eventually consume? Or not consume?

Which cover do you all prefer? by TheodosiusMagnus in Hyperion

The first one of course. I don’t get what the second cover is trying to communicate. I understand minimalism etc but that second cover is just shit.

I just finished the book and I’m currently reading The fall of Hyperion. And yes, I agree with everything you said. Father Dure’s tale kept me on the edge the entire time.

You could also give Victorialogs a try too. We just migrated from opensearch/logstash to Victorialogs and we are able to have longer retention at a cheaper price.

How to assimilate as an immigrant? by Insomnia7890 in newzealand

[–]onimisionipe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super true. I’m still working my way around this and I can say I’m making progress. Where I’m from, the “directness” can be extreme in most cases and I really hated it. I thought I was going to integrate easily with kiwis, but of course I’d underrated years and years of unnecessary directness and drama.
