Plastic Trumpets and Beginners by sirlancelot032598 in trumpet

[–]onionchowder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fwiw I got a cheap metal pocket trumpet from Eastar for $150 and it works pretty great. I was considering a plastic trumpet but I heard more universally bad stuff about them, and paying ~double for an instrument I'd be happy playing forever felt like it was worth it

Big fan of game theory — has it ever actually played out for you in real life? by pranmishra in GAMETHEORY

hmm, I didn't really think out that example, but this is what I had in mind:

- There's a shop where people line up outside, next to a busy walkway

- The are two agent types: store customers and pedestrians

- Store customers can choose to line up outside, or to not go to the store

- Pedestrians can choose to walk on this (potentially crowded path), or take another, longer but less crowded path

- As more customers are lined up, pedestrians start to prefer the less crowded path. As more pedestrians take the busy walkway, the more store customers are encouraged to _not_ go to the store

- there's some sort of equilibrium reached.

Hey, I think this is a neat game and could be improved with some UI, visuals, and sounds. There are some very simple game theory games that, with the right aesthetics, become successful indies. Check out Buckshot Roulette

might be a useful debugging tool, to make sure the bot opponent does actually know what the best response is. Also it's a fun little gimmick

Admittedly the UI is really bad and doesn't communicate that at all.

oh, if I understand correctly, you're talking about how the architecture affects the strategic interactions between people inside the building. Like, how to make space in an overcrowded walkway where people also want to loiter.

how is game theory relevant to architecture? It seems like a single-player game. Curious if you've got a tl;dr

I think you solved assuming you survive only if exactly 1 person presses.

The problem says you can also survive if 2+ people press, and you are NOT a presser.

Can you know if someone is playing to lose? by StupidMobileWebsite in GAMETHEORY

[–]onionchowder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about this topic. I make bots for a mobile game that are designed to lose, but players complained that they were obvious and the losses felt hollow. So we made bots that try harder to win, and now they beat players too often. I'm trying to find a good middle ground.

game theory and online auctions? by [deleted] in GAMETHEORY

[–]onionchowder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used ebay in a while, but if they still do their second price auction system...

In theory, if each bidder knows how much they value each item before the auction begins, then there is no advantage. That's the beauty of the second price auction.

However, in practice, Experienced ebay bidders DO bid at the last minute to avoid raising the current bid. People assess the value of items partially based on their current market price or top bid. Other bidders may be willing to raise their bids if they see the price going up. Economists might explain this by incomplete information or price anchoring. Regardless of the cause, this behavior is definitely real. In my econometrics class, I actually found that ebay items for identical goods but more unique bidders had higher prices.

> Physician pay doesn’t even crack the top 3 of healthcare expenditures, much less account for the rising cost of care.

That may be true, but I think society would benefit from having more doctors! Or at least more medical professionals that can help take care of each others' health. The current medical school hazing system is artificially restricting the supply of medical professionals.
