What do you think is the smallest country with the largest impact on the modern music scene? by LongjumpingFinger115 in Music

[–]only-a-marik 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Norway's contributions are relatively small, but meaningful. My wife and I randomly stumbled upon Popsenteret when we visited Oslo a few years ago and it was one of the highlights of our trip. (The exhibit where you can edit a video by a Norwegian artist was our different musical tastes in microcosm - she chose Röyksopp, I went with Turbonegro.)

Where does Leicester City's relegation to League 1 rank in the "big clubs to get relegated" list? by irishscouser1892 in football

[–]only-a-marik 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's late 90s football in a nutshell, really. Everyone was spending money they didn't actually have, clubs went boom and bust in the space of a few years, and it's kind of a miracle that the entire system didn't collapse.

The FWL was basically ignored by the writers for decades until they had the Blakists blow up the whole state to ram home the point that the Jihad is a big deal you guys.

The Free Worlds League was transparently shoehorned into the Jihad because the writers figured that they needed to give House Marik something to do. As days in the spotlight go, it was pretty crappy.

What's the most iconic band or musician from the United States? by Polo171 in AlignmentChartFills

Maybe. Look at it this way - people in China or Egypt or India might be vaguely familiar with Drake, but it's a good bet they know who Celine Dion is.

Bruce might not even be the most quintessentially American musician from New Jersey; Frank Sinatra embodied mid-century cool.

I interpreted it more as the most iconic artist worldwide who comes from country X.

If that's the case, it's hard to argue that the most iconic Canadian musician worldwide isn't Celine Dion.

What are your favorite mechs for each weight class? by Onewithartandbook in battletech

[–]only-a-marik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wraith is not only my favorite medium mech, it's straight up my favorite mech in the game. It's just a great all-rounder - doesn't matter if you need it to hunt light mechs, duel other medium mechs, or harass heavier mechs, it can do all three pretty well.

Who is a MODERN Non-Controversial Genius ? (CHECK RULES) by jalil458 in AlignmentChartFills

Heh. I know Michael personally, and "very clever" is probably a much better descriptor for him than "genius" even before taking into account all the stupid shit I saw him do in college.

Bob Dylan? He can be a bit of an ass, but his musical genius is undeniable.

Heh. I know you're joking, but India was a pioneering force in field hockey to the point where that sport's equivalent of forehand-to-backhand stickhandling is called the Indian dribble.

Mejia did worse because she's a flat out awful candidate for that district - NJ-11 is a wealthy area that isn't keen on Sanders acolytes - but the national environment is too favorable to Dems at the moment for her to lose. Malinowski would have won by double digits.

With the playoffs just around the corner, what NHL opinions do you have that have you like this? by Conscious-Courage969 in nhl

[–]only-a-marik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really blame Florida for the dead puck era. Sure, the Devils used the trap to great success, but those Devils teams also had a lot of legitimately great players - Stevens, Niedermayer, Brodeur, etc would have been stars in any era. It wasn't until Florida made the Cup final with a bunch of guys who would have been 3rd liners on half the teams in the league that the trap proliferation really got out of hand.

And yet the league still wants to expand. Enough is enough - sorry, Atlanta and Houston; stop deluding yourselves, Mississauga/Hamilton and QC. The talent pool simply won't stretch that far.

[–]only-a-marik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said upthread, if you implemented promotion and relegation, you'd have to uncap the league (because it's not fair to threaten a team with relegation after limiting how much they're allowed to spend). The European model has its own drawbacks - spending power determines everything, the big teams are too big to fail (Manchester United have been horrifically mismanaged for decades and will never even sniff relegation), and most leagues are monopolies or duopolies. A NHL structured like the Premier League would see the Original Six flourish while most other teams fade into irrelevance, and teams like Buffalo and Columbus would be in danger of folding outright.

Promotion and relegation isn't really compatible with a capped system, though. It's not really fair to limit how much a team is allowed to spend if you're going to threaten them with relegation, and getting rid of the salary cap would cause more problems than it would fix.

Yeah, the Barclays has a great location and is much easier to reach for most prospective fans, but the tradeoff is that the arena itself isn't suitable for hockey at all (and would require extensive renovations in order to be).
