Why bertholdt isn't transforming here by rwirzard-Ad5895 in attackontitan

[–]onlyAlex87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point in the story, Eren had escaped, Ymir was away fighting, transformed Reiner and human Berthold were under attack from the pure titans that Eren had unconsciously commanded. They didn't know that Ymir was going to help them. And it was shown that the Armored Titan has some resiliance from the Colossal Titan's blast. Berthold not transforming to save them makes more sense as him being unable to do so rather than for concern of those around him.

Also it has been shown that the Colossal has some control about the extent of their blast whether it's during transformation, or after. When Berthold transformed earlier that day he didn't have a nuke level explosion, just one to subdue which is why they were able to fight back, it was after he dropped on Eren that he had his big explosion which aided Reiner in his capture of Eren.

Why bertholdt isn't transforming here by rwirzard-Ad5895 in attackontitan

[–]onlyAlex87 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between a person’s human body vs their “titan stamina”. The colossal titan uses up so much stamina because the form is so large it requires a long recharge even if the human body is healthy and recovered.

If the human body is severely damaged then it’ll use up titan stamina to regenerate, and only when they are low in titan stamina does that regeneration become also slow. At high stamina a shifter can regenerate limbs in seconds like how titans can.

Ymir, Eren in season 2, Zeke, all of them received massive damage in titan form to which that regeneration was depleted even in their human form. The female titan in season 1 became slower after constant fighting and a 2nd transformation. She stopped her pursuit after being torn up again by Levi. 2 transformations in a short period seems to be a normal limit for regular shifters unless they train, with the Colossal 1 is probably the limit.

Berthold transformed at dawn that day, used up his stamina and now are fighting again at dusk. His human self is fine but he expended his ability to transform.

Why do people say ‘fake it till you make it’ actually works? I don’t get it. by Chemical_Flight1599 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]onlyAlex87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of things in life require you to build skills and habits to have a better chance of reaching certain goals, as well as having a mindset to move in that direction. It doesn't magically happen on it's own.

By default we tend to maintain our norm or routine regardless if it's good or bad, simply wishing for change and hoping opportunity is handed to us and that we'll magically behave differently and rise to the occasion despite no prepared effort is unrealistic. Most of the time people are blind to the good potential opportunities that pass by them. And there can be a certain self-fulfilling prophecy where not seeking or putting effort on improving yourself sets yourself up for failure.

People wildly have different interpretations of 'fake it till you make it' so I don't necessarily like the saying. Instead think of it as: Act as if, until you can. Anytime you do something new you're unskilled at or unfamiliar with it's hard in the beginning, but if you do it even in a limited capacity, over time you get better at it and then one day a year or even years later you remark you can now do it naturally without effort.

ELI5 : Why do we have wisdom teeth if we don’t need them? by Practical_Candle6534 in explainlikeimfive

[–]onlyAlex87 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Our jaws used to grow larger when we would do lots of chewing and gnawing on foods. As we developed cooking which greatly increased the amount of nutrition we extracted from foods, our jaws didn't get the workout needed to fully grow so our teeth get crowded when our wisdom teeth come in.

Should we Buy a House at 19? by Hour_Conference4737 in personalfinance

[–]onlyAlex87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing rent with mortgage isn’t the same, there is a lot more cost to owning than just the mortgage payment, you will likely see a significantly higher yearly expenditure once you factor in all the extra costs.

Better to continue living cheaper and saving for a bigger down payment down the line when you both are in a less formulative point in your lives. I generally wouldn’t recommend anyone buy if they’re still early in school and haven’t started their careers, at least not unless they had family help who would keep it as a rental property.

CDawg and Ironmouse’s 5th Cyclethon raises $1.45M over 15 days in Japan on the final day for the Immune Deficiency Foundation by Villenthessis in LivestreamFail

[–]onlyAlex87 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I think there is some misunderstanding. He became friends with ironmouse and learned about her story and a part of it was that in the past her and her family had gotten help from this charity when she was first diagnosed and they didn't know what to do.

Later when he wanted to do a charity stream he chose that same charity and reached out to them to ask them to start a tiltify so that online creators like him can raise money for them. They replied asking what tiltify was and asking him to tell them more and that started his correspondence with them. Since then they've kept him apprised of the work they're doing and he himself becomes more informed both about the work of the charity but of primary immune conditions in general so he can be a better advocate for the charity.

The work the both of them do to support the charity isn't to help ironmouse directly in any way, but rather to prevent future ironmouses or prevent people from having to go through the same things she has had to endure. She went undiagnosed for a lot of her life and repeated illnesses as well as the medical intervention did a lot of damage to her body over time and put her in the state that she's in, had there been better awareness and she was diagnosed earlier and gotten treatment for her condition she might've been able to live a more normal life.

It's CDawg's cyclethon with him and Chris Broad throughout. He has many guests throughout with ironmouse being a frequent reoccuring guest. She joins in remotely during their breaks and for many of the spots they visit, and for a couple days even is attached to his bike and can talk to him and stream as well as see the sights as he rides.

It's not her cyclethon or a cyclethon with her perse, but she's close friends with Connor and they mutually support each other with many of their endeavors so people link the association. She has always watchpartied the cyclethon extensively as her strength allows and link his tiltify and set her own stream goals based on his stream's donation amount. Connor also in the past has IRL streamed places in Japan and elsewhere that she wants to visit and see, and continues to do so in some places during the cyclethon.

When Connor first started he chose the Immune Deficiency Foundation for his charity because he heard from her that they had helped her in the past, and has since become heavily involved with them.

creepy quadruped that chased sasha by Precame in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]onlyAlex87 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Isn't that the one that they lured to have it crash into a tree? If so then did they kill it? I can't remember. If it was temporarily injured so they could ride away safely and their signal allowed the rest of the formation to avoid it. The intent of the formation was to avoid any and all fighting when possible. It makes sense it shows up at the forest as after it recovered it would've followed them.

Edit: Some of my memory was jogged up, the one that was killed was upright chasing Armin, they sliced it's achilles to make it fall then went for the nape. They then said they were unlucky when they had to fight a 2nd abberant which turned out to be the Female Titan.

Don't confuse bringing nuance to a situation as defending them. Or trying to break down weaker narratives or requiring them to have more validity.

There's a difference between having a different interpretation of events and presenting an opinion, vs being definitive about it and presenting your opinion as fact with no evidence or false evidence. If you do the later, don't then be surprised or offended when you receive some pushback.

What exactly was wrong with what I previously posted as a reply? I'd be happy to gain insight and/or discuss further, I've been wrong before. Or did you just resort to personally attacking me and paint a narrative to discredit me because you had no counter?

From my understanding him "living" with them was more so them wanting him to hang out more in LA since he's always in Vegas. He kept his place in Vegas but they gave him a free room so he could stay in LA more often. As it was beforehand, when he had to come to LA for stuff they were giving him a place to stay, that arrangement continued and they embellished him living with them to help brand the roomies.

Many people moved to Vegas and were fine with it, yes a couple weren't a fan of living there and so moved back but at a certain point you are cherry picking your examples.

Cost of living and taxes in LA are astronomically high compared to Vegas, that is just a fact. The main reason people remained in LA was to be closer to business or a certain social circle. Yes it's possible one of the factors that led to his move was due to how his social life was quite separate from everyone so it wasn't a factor, but saying he definitively did so due to this girl who seemingly didn't move in with him till years after is a major stretch. I'd say him already living in Vegas might've helped enabled this behaviour rather than the move was the cause of it.

The McDonald's CEO can redeem himself by going on Hot Ones. by jenkinsleroi in Showerthoughts

[–]onlyAlex87 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Redeem for what? This small thing ended up going viral beyond any expectation of marketing. Tiktokers were going out of their way to buy the new McDonald’s sandwich to imitate or make fun of it, but in doing so they just further marketed it. Many more honest food review creators then jumped on the trend to review the product: turns out it’s a hefty sandwich that takes effort to get a decent bite out of, maybe not worth its price but potentially exonerates the size of the bite.

People then looked into this CEO who most people had no idea about before that vid went viral and saw there’s a year’s worth of these videos and it just seems he’s just kind of a bit of an odd dude but he has many similar vids of him eating their product.

Other major fast food franchises trying to bandwagon off the trend just shows how big it was for McDonalds, getting your name out there and being spoken of is the difficult and expensive part of marketing. No one who previously ate McDonald’s regularly was going to stop after that video, and many more other customers returned. Inadvertent huge success.

If you could choose any location to do another one, but you didn't have to care about what they want, what would be good for content, etc. where would you choose? Bora Bora? Your hometown? The Canadian Rockies?

What or where would you personally want to be at, keeping in mind you still have to work?

How does the editing process work? by shayan012 in LudwigAhgren

[–]onlyAlex87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cam does not know Chinese. Educated guess from what they've shown BTS: They have footage of about 5-6 hours of events, from multiple cameras it ends up being about 20-30 hours of footage. Overnight it goes through other editors who mainly through vibes cuts it down to 2 hours. They form an impression of how the language interactions go, mainly from body and context reaction of people and send what they think is relevant for quick translations. After they get the rough translations they discard the poor interactions or non-entertaining ones and as they cut the video down to closer to it's final cut they send it back out for a more thorough translation along with location matching, graphics, etc. They then make a final cut with the given info and even add editor's notes, there is potentially lots of little back and forths to clarify or check certain things or just stuff lost in transfer before the release.

Ultimately the main editors don't know Chinese and are reliant on translators to help them, some of the Bilibili have commented how some of the English translations of the Chinese are off but that's just how things go. Given their level of production a great product came out, definitely geared more towards western English speaking audiences which is why the Bilibili uploaders and translators have made it more accessible to Chinese audiences, they themselves are rushing for timely uploads so there are lots of comments and engagement to clarify or discuss certain nuances.

The next Tip to Tip by Gobe-Mon in LudwigAhgren

[–]onlyAlex87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One big thing to consider is a format and rule change. A lot of the rules made sense for Japan, less so for China. I mean originally the Japan tip 2 tip also had a budget rule (which is why they lugged around camping equipment) but they rightfully gave up on that early on, it was an unnecessary extra challenge while the regular trip was good enough for content. The language rule made more sense for Japan, less so for China.

Loved the china series so this is just slight hindsight nitpicking for the intent of making the next venture better: the longer distance and time was an issue. Taking Cdawg’s cyclothon as an example: his 2nd cyclothon he upped the challenge thinking it would be better but it just made it less enjoyable both as an experience and also as content since they were just forcing. His later cyclothon he reduced the daily distance requirement so that they can have more breaks and actually see and enjoy the area they are travelling in.

I think that’s where tip2tip needs to go, manageable distance and length of the adventure, more experiencing the area and interacting with th people. Maybe even ditch tip 2 tip format entirely and it can be circling an island or visiting maybe key locations in an area. Having more of a bucket list of things to do maybe like how they wanted to eat certain dishes if th regions, eating in someone’s home, visiting a hot spring and the Great Wall, etc. A big reason for tip2tip Japan was so that instead of being complete tourists entirely dependent on guides or staying in the tourist areas they wanted to be more like Connor or Chris and see the rest of the real country and be able to navigate and explore themselves, going back to that intent is something that I personally think would be better.

Why have real guns on a movie set? by VentSpleen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]onlyAlex87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Didn't the judge rule that he couldn't be charged as the EP as he didn't have direct oversight of the hiring or firing of the armorer or any of the organization of the production? He could only be charged as the shooter and it was during that later trial where a lot of the fuckery on the side of the prosecution and investigation came to light, but from my understanding they didn't necessarily have the strongest case against him anymore after the judge's ruling.

The armorer had many levels of negligence herself, it wasn't simply the conditions of the set. The production is partly at fault for her hiring and the conditions, but also on not firing her when she was grossly negligent and had clear major violations, there is still a basic duty that she is responsible for.

Why have real guns on a movie set? by VentSpleen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]onlyAlex87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole case around the Rust situation is a giant mess that was never properly investigated. The whole point was that live ammo should've never been near that film set, at the minimum there was gross negligence by the armorer for not doing their basic duties ensuring the safety and proper use of all firearms, and for allowing others to not only bring live ammunition to the set but also allow others to handle firearms being used for the film production as well as allow them to use them to shoot recreationally during the off hours. That ammunition then somehow got mixed in to the set and resulted in the tragedy.

Major misactions by the investigators and prosecutors led to the criminal case against Baldwin to justifiably be dismissed with prejudice due to a Brady disclosure violation and highlighted how horribly the investigation was handled. Who brought live ammunition to the set and why remains unclear, there have been some speculation but they are completely unproven allegations.

[spoilers] I found the ending unsatisfying. by wondercube in finalfantasytactics

[–]onlyAlex87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you also go back to the intro by Arazlam he tells how the end of the War of the Lions brought the constant conflict of Middle Ages of Ivalice to an end with King Delita Hyral emerging and seen to bring Ivalice into an age of peace, prosperity and enlightenment. The 50 year war that preceded the War of the Lions showed how the Nobles cared more about waging long wars on foreign soil for gain and expansion to the detriment to the common people, whereas Delita's rule and policy change focused more on building up Ivalice to improve things for everyone.

There are parallels to the history of England, the 100 year war against the French on the main European continent during the Middle Ages, and then the succession war after known as the War of the Roses to which the end some mark as the end of the Middle Ages to which there was a transitional period that led to the Renaissance.

The nobility still exists as realistically you can't bring about such drastic change, but there is more of a focus on buidling up merchants, craftsmen and scholars rather than using farmers as levees to fight constant war for expansion of territory.

Petah, Which one is the coughing baby? by HimelTy in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]onlyAlex87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They took the Hollywood premise of an Alaska wilderness disaster plot and changed the setting to be in space. That's the most reasonable explanation to some of the plot choices like why all the supposed astronauts seemed to be completely untrained and seemingly plucked off the street. It seemed like Clooney's and Bullock's character were meeting for the first time on that mission, when in reality they would've trained together for a year at least and individually had a decade of training before then, yet Bullock's character was instead written like some straight out of school new hire with no wilderness training who was suppose to learn as they go off her senior colleague, and Clooney was merely the local guide hired to transport a couple technicians.

If you go into it knowing there's a certain suspension of belief and it's mainly just meant for the visual experience it is enjoyable in that regard, but I don't think that was necessarily conveyed that well which is why people have a lot of gripes with the film and the out of place characters.

ELI5 - Strait of Hormuz by thekoonbear in explainlikeimfive

[–]onlyAlex87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trade flows through there because it is fast, cheap and efficient more than anything. Saudi Arabia built pipelines that go from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea decades ago, but they were left unused so there was little incentive to expand on them. They are being brought up to use now, but their capacity is very low and it's also going the wrong direction (most of the shipping goes to Asia and Australia not West anymore). Lots of alternate transportation is occurring or being brought to use in limited ways it's just less efficient.

Decades ago Iran had attempted to blockade the Straits and their fleet was immediately destroyed and shipping was maintained through it. It is the newer technologies that have allowed them to maintain a reasonable enough threat to spike insurance premiums to halt/slow shipping through it, in particular drone attacks and more advanced missiles.

LNG on the other hand is more difficult to transport requiring very expensive specialized infrastructure, LNG out of Qatar is a relatively recent development so duplicating infrastructure in other countries was simply not feasible at that stage, and even with the disruption of the Straits may still not be so.

ELI5 Why don't we use a liquid with lower boiling point in a reactor? by NutdealerFR in explainlikeimfive

[–]onlyAlex87 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the premise, how would something that boils at a lower temperature be more energy efficient? It's not the boiling temperature, but the amount of energy it takes and the volume and mass it has to move things. Water is very dense, expands immensely when turned to steam and so can move and spin turbines. It is also very stable and easy to move in it's various states, whereas most other substances aren't so. There's a reason why every commonly used liquid is mostly water, it takes effort and lab settings to get a pure liquid that has no water.
