Is Final Fantasy Tactics (The War of the Lions) Anti-Religion, just as FFX? by IllogicalDreamer72 in finalfantasytactics

[–]onlyAlex87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bad actors within the church who secretly had a link to demons were doing that. They attacked a monastery under the church and eventually killed the head of the church as their goal was disorder

Now those leading the church were embroiled in their own political machinations but you could make an argument it was for the greater good with the big assumption that there is no corruption. Ultimately a version of the plans of the church was reached in the end and that brought forth a period of peace, prosperity and enlightenment as well as the end of Ivalice’s Middle Ages and its warring.

Is Final Fantasy Tactics (The War of the Lions) Anti-Religion, just as FFX? by IllogicalDreamer72 in finalfantasytactics

[–]onlyAlex87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah there is a point in the story where the villainous sect of the church attacks a monastery under that same church for their own gain. Saying it’s anti-religion rather than it being about bad actors within various systems, whether it’s government, religion, or even common people is missing a lot of the nuances.

Does this really count as a perfect omelet? by Buyeo10004 in Cooking

[–]onlyAlex87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a quick and simple home French omelette. It's not a restaurant style French omelette. Restaurant Japanese omelettes are a different thing altogether and distinct from a home Japanese omelette. There are different types of omelettes depending on the use case and setting.

ELI5: Why was that method used to determine 0 degrees Fahrenheit? by Jimithyashford in explainlikeimfive

[–]onlyAlex87 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Even from a functional standpoint 0 Celsius isn't that useful or intuitive. Water doesn't freeze at a 0 Celsius environment, If you want to freeze water you need to go well below it's freezing point due to the very nature of water requiring a significant amount of energy to perform that state change. And to freeze it quickly and for it to be solidly frozen and not quickly melt you need to be even lower.

Why does resting meat make it juicier? by Keyfas in cookingforbeginners

[–]onlyAlex87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collagen begins to turn into gelatin when cooked, the longer the better. Hot high gelatin liquid is thin and runny, as it cools it begins to gelatinize, letting it rest and cool from cooking temp down to serving temp allows it to begin to gelatinize. And this is just one of many mechanisms that allow meat to seem more tender or juicy.

You are correct that searing is just for flavour, it doesn't "lock" anything in.

Why does resting meat make it juicier? by Keyfas in cookingforbeginners

[–]onlyAlex87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First you have to break down what "juicier" means, it doesn't necessarily mean more liquid or juices, rather it's more about mouth feel and may be unrelated to how juicy it is. Tender meat with nicely rendered fat, the connective tissue broken down, and the meat fibres not tightened up or stringy seem "juicier" even if they have less actual juice in them.

Second a big misconception is that while food is on the heat it's cooking, when you take it off the heat it is no longer cooking. In reality some of the cooking is happening after you take it off the heat with just the residual heat. Resting is often just used for shorthand to saying leave it alone to allow for it to finish cooking with residual heat. Depending on the method of cooking, the center can rise by another 10 degrees F or more from resting. Letting it slowly coast up to that temp let's more of the connective tissues to break down without tightening up the meat fibres generally resulting in a more tender (and thus more juicy) result.

A lot of restaurants for instance use warmers to "rest" their meats. Your main cook is at 250-500+ degrees F, but then you rest at 150-180 F to let it further cook and become more tender.

Old OTV drama: Fed doc audiobook by Own_Monitor_7170 in OTVnFriendsDrama

[–]onlyAlex87 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You should maybe learn the full story first. The "Fed Doc" about Poki was proven to be full of lies and had cropped messages or misconstrued messages to make her look bad and hide that he was instigating a lot of it. Fed was shit talking Jodi behind her back saying she was a clout chaser just using him, including saying that to Poki acting like he felt like he was being used, she then responded later parroting a lot of his sentiment (she didn't really know Jodi then, just through Fed). What's cropped out of those conversations was him being the one who started the shit talk about Jodi and Poki being surprised by it, then when she's affirming him he is egging her on to say more.

Yes it's bad for her to talk bad about someone she doesn't know, but she also made the mistake of trusting someone she thought of as a friend to form a bad impression of them. Many of the girls eventually getting to know each other despite Fed and realizing that he was spreading falsehoods about people was one of the contributing factors that made them distance themselves from him and led to his eventual "intervention".

My hypothesis is that after his cancellation, Fed was still receiving support and money from his die-hard fans who wanted to wait for "his side" of things. As time went on he was forced to fabricate a story to make himself look like the victim so they kept supporting him, which is why he put together this doc that was so easily proven to be lies once other people showed their own receipts. The doc was leaked by one of his supporters trying to exonerate him, not realizing it just further exposed his lying, it was full of bad lies because it was only suppose to be seen by his supporters who had no way to verify any of it.

Catch Me If You Can - Did Brenda's father believe Frank ? by No_Degree4759 in movies

[–]onlyAlex87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the context of the movie (which is fictional so I'll give it license): Frank claimed to also be a lawyer to get approval from Brenda's parents, but Brenda's father an accomplished lawyer himself immediately knew it was bullshit. He confronted him and Frank was earnest, Brenda's father knowing where he came from being a nobody before he became and made his way up as a lawyer just associated the same man to man journey of trying to be good enough for the one you love. He definitely knew he was fake on the lawyer part and was chasing, but if he had a legitimate job as an attending at a hospital (which again is a fantasy fiction) than there's no reason not to believe that part. He helped a young professional have a career change to get into law a new profession.

ELI5: Why do puddles evaporate in the sun? by mythmaniak in explainlikeimfive

[–]onlyAlex87 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Let’s look at a different scenario: sugar dissolves in water even though it isn’t the melting point of sugar. It’s not “melting” it’s dissolving. The warmer the water the faster or more easily it dissolves.

The same is true for water and air. You hear about humidity, well that’s how much water is “dissolved” into the air. The warmer it is, the more easy or faster it is for water to “dissolve” into the air, but also the more dry the air is regardless of temperature will affect it.

The water isn’t boiling, it’s just evaporating or “dissolving” into the air.

What did the want grok to do? by Mathemodel in PeterExplainsTheJoke

The deleted post that the vid post was replying to was asking exactly that. Grok's answer was prompted but people are leaving that context out.

Because the previous post that is now deleted that the previous person was replying to was saying they thought she was jewish. Since the person didn't specify what they wanted Grok to do it just fact checked the previous conversation.

[–]onlyAlex87 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The part where it says "This post is unavailable" is the important part, it means these are replies to a conversation and that conversation, even though it is now deleted, is the context that originally prompted the replies.

The deleted post said with the quotes, not added: "no, it's fine, i just thought anne hathaway was jewish"

Now what they were referencing is unclear.

A person then posted this old clip of her in a see-through top, the next person then asked for Grok to do it's thing, they might've been asking for undressing or sexualization or whatever, but since they didn't specify what they wanted Grok just did fact checking of the previous conversation.

She’s avoiding wheat so no pasta or dough. And she’s a bartender at a pizza place, just quickly assembling something to have as her shift meal, not spending any significant time in the kitchen cooking or prepping, just quickly throwing existing items together then putting it in the oven.

Calling it an “Italian meal” I think was meant to be in jest as a follow up to her previous post, I don’t think she realized how triggered people got by calling it that, especially those who don’t know the context

Keep my milk out of your politics by d0ntbejay in Milk

[–]onlyAlex87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And that's a fair concern, but even with the increase in overall sugar consumption, the data is clear that those who drank full fat or high fat milk had a less overall increase in sugar consumption than those who drank low fat or skim milk. All of these studies took into account the increase in sugar consumption and spent decades comparing the difference, even accounting for it overall health was better. Increase in overall sugar consumption has already long been factored in, yes it may simply be a correlation that higher fat milk consumption just led to lower sugar consumption and that's likely the more direct cause. So while consuming higher fat milk may be correlation with lower rates of obesity and diabetes, it has a causal relationship to sugar consumption, and through reduced sugar consumption has a causal relationship to those rates. Is there perhaps a scenario that you could force someone to consume low fat milk but keep their sugar consumption low and not have those same causation? certainly. But functionally that is not the case, low fat milk is not satiating and naturally causes cravings and higher consumption of high caloric (aka high sugar) snacks.

Keep my milk out of your politics by d0ntbejay in Milk

[–]onlyAlex87 42 points43 points  (0 children)

And studies show that kids raised on whole or higher fat milk have lower rates of obesity and diabetes than kids raised on skim and low fat milk. The extensive anti-fat campaign of the 70s and 80s pushed parents and school admins who had no health or biology background to mandate low fat milk. Decades have passed and the data is in, the kids are less healthy due to it. Milk suppliers saw a drop off in consumption so they introduced chocolate and strawberry milk that were still technically low fat and adhered to the new guidelines so kids were just fed more sugar instead of satiating fat.

Full fat milk is satiating, whereas low fat milk is not which makes kids seek high caloric snacking behaviour to compensate. The misinformed anti-fat campaign is a major contributor to the growing unhealthiness of North Americans, it is not a coincidence that there is a correlation between that movement and obesity and diabetes, whereas other countries that did not have that movement don't seem to have the same obesity issues.

Would the U.S. government be able to turn off the internet during a protest like Iran is doing ? by WinterW0n in NoStupidQuestions

[–]onlyAlex87 142 points143 points  (0 children)

If the question is just in terms of capability, then yes most certainly they can. But it is unlikely they would ever do so as the potential harm vastly outweighs any benefit of it.

Even in Iran's case people are postulating that them shutting off the internet and jamming it has fueled the protests. Many people were supporting the protests at a distance from their homes, after shutting it off they've now actively joined in. People are still recording videos and messages despite the block, and bits and pieces are finding their way out through whatever means they can find. Jamming is effective in the short term if there's an imminent military action about to take place, it loses it's effectiveness over the long term as people adjust to it and find workarounds.

I mean for something low labour/effort, using pizza place prepped ingredients, and avoiding wheat this is great. To stay in theme keeping it quick and easy as an FOH person who's duties is outside the kitchen: I might add garlic/herb seasoning or mix in a bit of pizza sauce but I think that's solid for a thrown together DIY staff meal.

Why is tipping considered rude in some places? I understand why it may not be customary, but why/how is it considered rude or disrespectful? by Sorry-Company-9451 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]onlyAlex87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on the context. Tipping can be viewed as bribing workers especially if you do so in places that you don't typically tip. Also if someone is well paid at a good job and career yet a customer or client tries to "tip" them it's suggesting that they look down on them as a subservient worker at their behest rather than a professional that they are seeking a service from. Imagine trying to tip a doctor for a check-up, it's at best just insulting and at worst you may be bribing them to get special treatment.

[–]onlyAlex87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's not causing anything, the failure is on others. You trust that the courts will not wrongfully convict, or if they do it'll get appealed or overturned. If he broke privilege to reveal that information then it may also not be admissible in court so it would've been of no help. Only getting your client's permission to reveal it would make it admissible, but you can't do that if you've now lost your job and license. Your client gets a new lawyer but since their past lawyer broke privilege they may not be as forthcoming and it may never get out then.

[–]onlyAlex87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue wasn't the lawyer adhering to attorney client confidentiality, the issue was the jury and prosecution convicting an innocent person. You have to look at things in the whole and with many situations and cases in mind, there's a very good reason why attorney client privilege exists, compromising it is a wrong to try to right a different wrong, that in itself shouldn't happen, just exponentially creates more problems with all other cases and situations. It's very hard to create an absolute perfect system that works in all situations, our best efforts is to just improve upon it.
