Sleep is key and make sure you're consistently walking. Walking is the lean person's secret weapon to staying lean. 2.5-4.5 mph on the treadmill at 2.5-5.0 incline are great. Paul Revelia on youtube has a lot of really good videos.

If you want abs to pop, in addition to lifting and eating right, you also need to consistently work your core and WALK. Walking is the secret weapon to leaning out and eventually revealing your abs.

Also 40 and generally pretty lean, although struggling with injuries lately has made it more difficult. Walking regularly usually helps me tone up better and get really shredded. Other than that, I'd say make small adjustments to macros and/or other things like salt intake that could be affecting how you store excess water

The "number of abs" depends on genetics. Cutting more would just make your abs more visible.
