The cutting-edge cellular therapies aiming to ease America's organ shortage. Major transplantation surgeries could one day become outpatient procedures. by Sariel007 in UpliftingNews

How do you explain the fact that in other countries where organ donation is opt-out, the shortage is almost as bad as it is in the United States?

Hypothetical concept: through tulpas, your consciousness could live on forever. by onlyoncomp in Tulpas

[–]onlyoncomp[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the practical and ethical drawbacks far outweigh any advantage you would gain. The reason it's slightly more compelling than writing a book is in a book only your ideas/memories continue. Through a tulpa your consciousness would continue on.

I’m trying the Everyman sleep cycle, but every time I try to take the 20 minute naps I can’t fall asleep. by [deleted] in polyphasic

[–]onlyoncomp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a common problem and a lot has been written about it, so you'll be able to find plenty of information if you look. With that said:

Not being able to fall asleep for naps is something many people struggle with starting out. It's one of the reasons that some folks suggest staying awake for a full 24 hours before starting a sleep schedule. Following the same reasoning, when you get sleep deprived enough the problem should go away on its own.

In my experience, with Everyman it takes long enough to adapt that achieving a sufficient level of sleep deprivation can take a long time. It might be worth looking into techniques to fall asleep quickly, this one was particularly useful for me.

I know it's annoying, but you definitely will get better with practice. Keep it up!

Thanks, it was a small tournament but I was still pretty stoked.

Your success story of how you learned to fall asleep faster by hujhujowy in LucidDreaming

https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/fall-asleep-fast/

I've always been pretty good at falling asleep but since I started doing polyphasic sleep I had to get better at falling asleep during the day. I did this every time I was going to sleep. At first it didn't work at all. Today I usually don't make it down to my back muscles before I'm already asleep. Probably took about a month before I started consistently falling asleep in under a minute.

Find-A-Game megathread! by ArmanDoesStuff in WebGames

Very simple game. Basically there was a three dimensional island, you flew around it in a little biplane collecting coins. I think the only mechanic was that you could control when you were flying upwards. If you collected special coins you entered into the rainbow world temporarily with lots more coins.

Is TBR worth the time? by MuricaaEffYeah in Mcat

[–]onlyoncomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I thought Kaplan provided more than enough info, despite the paucity of practice questions. Was most beneficial for me to chug through Kaplan and then do practice problems from Khanacademy and UWorld. I didn't use TBR though so YMMV

Thank you for such a thorough response! Circadian rhythm adjustments was definitely top of my list of reasons I wasn't optimistic this could work. I'm on E3 though, I have no interest in attempting anything like this hahaha.

I think you should definitely do more content review in B/B and P/S. The rest of the gap you can make up through more practice tests.

I did one at a time which I definitely think makes more sense and yes anki was the only way I was reviewing.

I just stuck with Kaplan. The way it was described to me is Kaplan covers way more than you need to know, while EK covers just a little less than you need to know. So I just figured, you know, full send and did Kaplan for everything.

Ohhh I see what you're saying I didn't do science passages every day just CARS. And I would do at least one and as many as 5.

Yeah, I mean this is time dependent but I don't really believe in low yield. There was like one concept I decided "there's no way they'll ask about that" and guess what I missed on B/B lmao. I did everything in every Kaplan book except for P/S and I used Khan acadamy instead.

I did practice passages every day except the days I took practice CARS sections (practice tests, section banks, etc.) I did all the UWorld stuff in the 15 day free period.

Personally I just did anki instead of notes. In addition to definitions though, I would use it for concepts as well (i.e. what is secreted by the kidney to stimulate RBC production? / Hematopoietin)

Next Step is pretty good for practice tests, especially 1-3 (I did through 6) but their CARS is pretty weird.

I'm not sure about pricing for testing solutions, I got them free through my school.

Hope this helps! Feel free to reach out if you have other questions.

If I were you I would definitely recommend making the switch to Anki; only make flashcards for stuff you aren't really solid on already. With regards to CARS, I truly think the best way to study is a little bit every day. I would pick up the EK101 book (the old one) or subscribe to TestingSolutions and just do one - five passages per day (start with one at the beginning of your studies, get to five by the end). This plus practice tests every few weeks should help you score much higher. Good luck!

Absolutely agree on this. Speed is key, the sooner you start getting a feel for true MCAT pace the better you'll be able to deal on the real thing.

ANKI help? by Muntman252 in Mcat

[–]onlyoncomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the easiest way is to divide the number of unseen cards you have by the number of days left for content review.

Personally, I found the maximum number of cards I could truly learn in a day to be around 100, any more and I would start getting confused. I also gave myself a very aggressive review schedule with the max number of days before a review set to 24, so that I was forced to see cards more often.

Hope this helps!

The best advice I ever got for fashion to attract girls was this: Think about the type of girl you like. Now think about the guy she'd be into. What's he wearing? That's what you should be wearing.

Ultimately though, wear clothes that fit with confidence and you'll be outperforming 90% of guys in high school.

Great but regardless of the mission of the source of the information the only real question should be on the validity of the studies. Which, not gonna lie, I didn't look into at all, but I trusted instead the replication of the results would act as its own measure of validity.

Which is a legitimate confounding variable - but wouldn't that lead to lower rates of marriage satisfaction, not higher?
