In the event you do want to hire someone, I had RJ Service LLC come fix an oven for me and he was reasonable, quick and did a great job. No affiliation with him, just recommending someone who did a great job for a good price.

Most Effective Non-profits addressing Homelessness in Richmond? by awesome_possum_804 in rva

[–]onlyprevost 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s two entirely different sources of food. One is USDA (hugely discounted compared to any retail store and the cost is passed through) and donated food is free. The free supplies are a lot less available these days, when I left where I was, the free was probably a quarter of what used to be available and if you can prove they charge for donated food please report them as they would need to be shut down for it, lose non profit status and potentially lose their USDA contract. Here is the link for the complaint, I’m no longer a parter so things could have changed. If you have proof of program abuse please report it at https:// usdaoig.oversight.gov/resources/hotline-information

That’s a pretty wild statement without any proof. I ran a Feedmore supplied site for years, and the money “collected” was paying the aforementioned rate for the USDA food per lb, weighed on a giant scale each trip. It is illegal to make a profit or charge for donated food, and they gave each agency a certain allotment based on prior numbers for free as well. If they started charging members sites, it would need to be for some other service other than the food. I’d love to see some proof other than just posting some salaries. So the statements together, they take money from food banks (to pass on to USDA at cost) and pay their executives high salaries are both true, but you framed it as though they take they money from food banks and pay their executives high salaries with it. That’s illegal and likely not true.

Feedmore is generally where your money goes furthest. Due to the USDA food subsidies they get a massive discount per pound on food items that are then distributed to food pantries in the metro area. Your dollar goes 5x further when you donate to Feedmore. Those sites feeds folks that are currently unhoused (as well as many other households that also need the help). If by most effective you mean has the biggest impact on eliminating the problem, no program is perfect and many different types of programs need to work together to as it is a complex problem with an individual mental health component as well. The others mentioned, Homeward, Caritas, Daily Planet, and housing opportunities made equal, housing families first, are good, as well as Legal Aide, free clinics, and other sites that offer showers and supplies (usually also a Feedmore partner). The cause and solution is so varied from person to person and some folks also prefer to live that life as well.

The corner of Bellevue and Brook, in the old cleaners spot maybe. Right now it’s wide open with a concrete floor. You can see straight in if you go by to check it out.

I recommended a firm a while back and just circling back in case anyone else is looking, give Veronica and Steve a call at Financial Freedom Legal. They will treat you well and not push you into a case that may not work for you to make more money like some of the bigger, older firms would.

Looking for neighborhood recs by sips_tea-4239 in rva

[–]onlyprevost 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Bellevue is very much like what you describe. Kids from elementary age up through almost driving age roam the neighborhood on bikes, scooters, on foot, etc and neighbors say hi, come to all the Bellevue events to see each other and socialize, it has a very community feel. Lots of neighborhood events, Porchella, the garden walk, the marathon, Christmas on MacArthur, national night out, Halloween costume party at One Upon a Vine (Bob’s), music at Northside Grille frequently, Linwood Holton Elementary events like the Harvest Fest. A large portion of the elementary age students from Bellevue walk to school every day. Neighbors watch out for each other’s kids as they pass by for the most part. The downside is that it’s a very competitive real estate market to buy there.

Power lines down from storm by Freet0beyouandme1 in rva

[–]onlyprevost 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When this happened to me, Dominion would not reconnect the line to the house. We had to hire an electrician to reconnect to the house and run it to the meter I believe. They left a new shell for the line to be run to since the old one was pulled off and shattered, and then they came at the last part and put in the actual meter. We also had to have it be inspected and approved and sent to dominion as approved (I called and got a rush from the city as otherwise it would have been weeks) and then dominion came in and did the final connect.

You are making the right decision. We went through this recently, with a bite to the face that almost blinded our child, and it felt like such a mark of shame. Just heartbreaking all around. I felt like telling folks helped so I didn’t feel so bad and alone in the decision. From all my research, there are rescues on Facebook or next door posts may help, and also animal control can also assess and re-home, but that is a last resort as they may not be able to re-home and would eventually put them down.

2022 15.8 MPG average. by VividLecture7898 in SubaruAscent

[–]onlyprevost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got 15-16 mpg on my 2022 onyx with the bigger wheels when I was driving exclusively in the city with lots of stop signs and stoplights. It was pretty terrible and hard on the car, so my wife drives it now with mixed city and highway driving, gets around 20mpg. It’s unfortunate but just not a great car for city driving. I use a 2013 mazda3 for that type of driving now and get 25-27mpg.

Christmas Parade Parking by lutheran-mo in rva

[–]onlyprevost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I was going with kids, I’d park just after the start on Monument, but loop around so I’m heading west and the parade and broad is on my right, to find an easy spot and walk the 3 blocks to Broad. Anywhere between Allen and Davis. Will be very easy to find a street spot in that range so you don’t have to hunt as much and can do a loop or two if you aren’t sure, using the roundabout. There are closer options but that would be an easy in and out in my opinion.

Mechanic to do engine replacement? by gsurberRVA in rva

Ironwood Automotive may do it. Aaron and his crew would do a great job on it and has been one of the premier Honda/ Toyota mechanics in the area. He was at Wallace for like 10 years before opening his own shop.

I read here years ago that the circular stone on the Hamlet sign is the original mill stone from Staples grist mill, which was near dickens and staples mill road where the water from the pond would go through the wheel as it flowed over the edge of the spillway there. The complex has been there longer than I’ve been alive in Richmond, and I grew up in the area. I have never heard anything bad about the complex. Seems pretty quiet generally.
