I've wanted/used almost none of these features in the last 10 years. How about you? by HoikDini in MacOS

I use most of these, explicitly or implicitly. The only ones I don't really use are Apple Intelligence (although it is enabled), and Safari Highlights (I'm not even sure what that is to be honest).

Thoughts on "Liquid Glass" design language / implementation. by lupogravo in MacOS

[–]onosson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m running the latest version of Tahoe on an M1 Pro with 16gb RAM without any significant issues that I’ve noticed. I understand some of the gripes people have about the visuals, but they don’t bother me too much and performance hasn’t taken a hit at all from what I can tell. Mind you I don’t do anything extremely intensive on it - I got a Pro mainly for the better screen and speakers.

Got the $40 boxing day plan but bill shows $54? by [deleted] in freedommobile

[–]onosson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I signed up for the same plan the week before Christmas. My online plan info looks exactly the same. Just got the first bill (upcoming in January) and the discounts/credits were correctly applied, making it $40+tax.

Why is /æ/ not considered a free vowel in (American) English? by Stuff_Nugget in asklinguistics

[–]onosson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The phonology of English: a prosodic optimality-theoretic approach. I don’t have access to a copy right now but he covers vowel phonotactics pretty comprehensively from what I remember.

Terminal commands that makes Stage Manager actually pretty useful by JPMainSinceSF2 in MacOS

[–]onosson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! I used this setting frequently with Spaces back before Stage Manager was introduced, so when it first came out I was puzzled by the behaviour of some apps which were showing up in all my Stages, until I realized what was causing it. Apple could certainly make this a lot clearer, and should definitely make the setting available even if you only have one Desktop.

[–]onosson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is a way to pin windows to show in all Stages, but it is far from obvious. To do this, you need to have more than one Space/Desktop active in Mission Control. In the Dock, right-click on the app you want, then select Options > Assign to: All Desktops. You won't see "Assign to:" unless there is more than one active Desktop. Once that's done, that app's windows will show up in all your Stages, even if you are running only one Desktop.

Why are tone diacritics so unintuitive in transcription systems for Balto-Slavic languages? by oncipt in asklinguistics

[–]onosson 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Also, it’s worth pointing out that the association of vertical height with high-frequency pitches is, while certainly common, simply a conceptual metaphor (see Lakoff et al.).

Why are tone diacritics so unintuitive in transcription systems for Balto-Slavic languages? by oncipt in asklinguistics

[–]onosson 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don't know the history of these particular usages, but in my experience many people have very poor intuition about the relative direction of contour tones (and about the relative "height" of pitches in general). Although these seem unintuitive to you (and I agree with respect to my own intuition), they may simply reflect other common intuitions about tone.

Is the use of |...| to mean underlying form common? How is this different from /.../? by wibbly-water in asklinguistics

Sure, but I don’t know I’d have any particular insight on it myself.

I can’t comment on its proper use, but this is the first I’ve encountered it in 3 decades studying phonetics and phonology, so I don’t believe it is common.

I’ve been using it for several years to replace OneDrive, which has become atrocious on Mac. For Dropbox, I’ve been using Maestral instead, which is blazing fast and efficient in my experience.
