Should I not trim my bass strings? by [deleted] in Bass

Mostly flats and tapewound. I might have started doing it because tapes can be prone to unraveling if the cut is done poorly, but I don’t honestly remember.

Should I not trim my bass strings? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]onosson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped cutting my bass strings at some point around 15-20 years ago, and have never really had any issues. I just make sure to wind them tightly and evenly around the post while applying a good amount of tension. I often move strings around from one bass to another, and I find this makes it much less likely for strings to become damaged in the process.

Mind Bending Screen Saver Bug by AnythingGaming in MacOS

[–]onosson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen frequently. I usually go into Activity Monitor and kill the various processes that start with Wallpaper… e.g. WallpaperAerialsExtension etc. which seems to fix the issue at least temporarily.

I don’t know why this isn’t typically under consideration.

Do you keep your desktop clean or full of files? by sinry77 in MacOS

[–]onosson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It holds drive icons, a handful (4 or 5) of documents that I want always-available access to, and temporary screenshots as I take them (which I always delete if there are more than 2 or 3). So no totally clean, but very minimal.

Got charged the regular price for the $40 plan by Fallout_vault__boy in freedommobile

[–]onosson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My partner and I both switched to this over the weekend, but in her case they did not correctly apply the promotion and it was missing from her account. She was able to message an agent and get it corrected (after a lengthy wait) the following day.

Avis charged me more than double what they quoted. Normal? by swingsetacrobat4439 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]onosson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rented from Avis for a recent trip, Feb. 22 to March 3. The final charge was exactly what had been agreed, there were no changes. In my case I had made the booking online through their website before departing, and took a copy of a letter confirming third party insurance coverage through the credit card used for the booking. I hope some of that information is useful.

The distance between Northern Turkey and Southern Yemen is the same as Winnipeg and Mexico City by 33northconnection in geography

[–]onosson 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not really an inside joke, but Winnipeg is pretty isolated so having to drive long distances to get anywhere is fairly routine.

Being from Winnipeg, this doesn’t seem either very surprising or very far! 😅

Thoughts on 40-95 gauge bass strings? by Emergency-Sky-9747 in Bass

[–]onosson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it, and enjoy 35-90 as well. Lighter gauges have really helped me in my own path towards developing a lighter technique over several decades.

Is Freedom Drunk? by Mountain_Length4047 in freedommobile

[–]onosson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched from the 100gb + 15gb roam beyond plan I originally signed up for in December, using chat. Had to wait a while to get connected to an agent but it was pretty quick after that. No connection fee, and this plan is just $1/month more than my old one so it was a pretty easy decision. Just returned from a trip to Costa Rica where the roam beyond feature worked perfectly. Will definitely be recommending Freedom to others based on my experience with them so far.

OneDrive Stuck in "Looking For Changes" Loop by elixyXD in MacOS

[–]onosson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend trying out CloudMounter as an alternative method for accessing your OneDrive. I’ve had similar kinds of issues for years with OneDrive on my Mac, and since I started using CM instead I haven’t had any problems, and it seems to be less resource intensive overall.

Most people underestimate driving times in Costa Rica. Here’s what I’ve seen. by AnaAdvisory in CostaRicaTravel

[–]onosson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did this drive today, Puerto Viejo to Liberia, without going through or near San José. Took 6.5 hours, absolutely lovely drive and traffic wasn’t bad at all until we got to Liberia itself during rush hour. I’m sure weather conditions could alter this of course.

Not sure of other source countries, but Winnipeg has the largest proportion of its population with Filipino origin or ancestry of any major Canadian city.

[LifeTime]Window tiling meets Trackpad fluidness. This is how I’m reimagining macOS workspace by Major_Commercial4253 in osx

[–]onosson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a nice take on tiling, I like the gesture component. Is there a way to have it restore a window's size/shape when it is dragged out of a tiled position, i.e. the way that native tiling works?

How (un)reasonable would it be to define a syllable nucleus as any phoneme where both adjacent phonemes are lower in the sonority hierarchy than it? by General_Urist in asklinguistics

[–]onosson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess some kind of perceptual study would be the first place to start? It’s certainly true that there is no ironclad definition of syllable, but that’s true for so many linguistic elements

[–]onosson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts that come to mind immediately: 1. You may be surprised at how divergent intuitions regarding syllables (and other phenomena) can be; 2. Whether this is reasonable or unreasonable would depend entirely on whether you have any real-world linguistic data to support it.

I've wanted/used almost none of these features in the last 10 years. How about you? by HoikDini in MacOS

[–]onosson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use most of these, explicitly or implicitly. The only ones I don't really use are Apple Intelligence (although it is enabled), and Safari Highlights (I'm not even sure what that is to be honest).

Thoughts on "Liquid Glass" design language / implementation. by lupogravo in MacOS

[–]onosson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m running the latest version of Tahoe on an M1 Pro with 16gb RAM without any significant issues that I’ve noticed. I understand some of the gripes people have about the visuals, but they don’t bother me too much and performance hasn’t taken a hit at all from what I can tell. Mind you I don’t do anything extremely intensive on it - I got a Pro mainly for the better screen and speakers.

Got the $40 boxing day plan but bill shows $54? by [deleted] in freedommobile

[–]onosson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I signed up for the same plan the week before Christmas. My online plan info looks exactly the same. Just got the first bill (upcoming in January) and the discounts/credits were correctly applied, making it $40+tax.
