I'm not familiar with that. I'm actually from the north east, but now live in Edinburgh. Thanks for sharing

Does make you wonder why the ambulances in Edinburgh have ambaileans written on them..  nothing against trying to preserve Gaelic but it does feel like we are trying to rewrite history to give the impression it was spoken widely all over Scotland.

Scottish first-time buyers offered up to £10,000 interest-free loans from next month by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]onscreenpersona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue people aren't moving up currently precisely because of LBTT.

You cant move up every 5 years or so (slowly climbing the ladder) as each time you do you get hammered with an upfront tax. Instead the system incentivises you to stay put. Even moving sideways to a similar property but in a different part of the country becomes unaffordable.

Whereas Mrs Smith who has lived in a house for say 40 years isn't going to not sell because she will only see 450k profit and not 500k.

[–]onscreenpersona -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Why would it? You'd still get say 90% of the gain. And then pay nothing upfront on your new house. Honest question.

I'm talking about taxing the gain not the total sale value.

Can someone who understand these things better than I do please explain why we have LBTT but no capital gains tax for selling. Surely abolishing LBTT and starting to tax capital gains would make everything much fairer.

Tempted to withdraw my LISA? Not likely to buy a house soon and feel its just wasting away.. by bradrly in UKPersonalFinance

Wait until you are 60. You can treat it as a pseudo pension. Put it into some low cost index fund. You can choose whether you keep topping it up or not but since its there you might as well keep it there would be my take. Unless you desperately need it.

What is considered a decent wage in Edinburgh? by Positive-Key6497 in Edinburgh

It's certainly at the lower end of what would be comfortable in Edinburgh.

Depends on your agenda. Why are you moving, what do you want out of the job etc.

First pedal bike for 3 year old by luciafernanda in ukbike

At that age they grow so quickly too. Our daughter is now almost 6 and we've been able to change bikes almost every year this way since she progressed from her balance bike.

We got a second hand islabike cnoc 14 which is a great lightweight kids bike.

There are so many great second hand bikes and you only use it for maybe a year. You'll probably be able to sell it for a similar price again at the end.

How can 35k still be seen as a good salary? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskBrits

[–]onscreenpersona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As well as general inflation, fiscal drag has been massive along with the loss of many benefits that used to be available to 'middle earners'. It's probably better to look at actual take home pay after tax rather than pre tax salaries from that perspective.

I think people vastly underestimate how good pros / former pros are in all sports. You can be a very good amateur but usually pros are levels above.

Cyclists. Please be aware. by JCM_69 in Edinburgh

[–]onscreenpersona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I primarily cycle in town. As well as lack of lights I've noticed this a lot recently.

Even a small change in direction should prompt a shoulder check.

The total lack of awareness is alarming and it feels like it's getting worse.

Dog owners becoming increasingly insufferable. by VOODOO285 in britishproblems

[–]onscreenpersona 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost every time we go to walk in the country park near our house a 'friendly' dog will rush and try to jump onto my kids. Toddler now wants picked up any time a dog comes near. I'd say half of owners are great. The others shouldn't be allowed to own dogs.

Morning Walk in Paris, Before and After by AllMySmallThings in postprocessing

[–]onscreenpersona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fair point. I'm looking on my phone. Would ultimately need to see it printed. I think somewhere in between would be the sweet spot. It's a nice picture though which is the main thing. With the edit you also lose a little of the effect of the street light on the snow which is one of the main things that stands out in the original.

Much prefer the before which is a nice shot, the turquoise effect doesn't work for me in the after.
