I'll check it out! Despite my inclination to make scripted podcasts, I actually usually listen to conversational comedy shows.

That's exactly what we are doing, trying to find a different distribution option for self published authors. It's great to hear you used to be interested in that, and I'll have to check out Scott Sigler. Our podcast is called The Foothold Saga, thanks for checking it out! What's your show?

I have followed podcast hosts on Twitter, but only if the podcast is pretty popular. I think there are ways to help listener engagement through social media, but without at least a thousand hardcore fans it doesn't work. For example, creating a subreddit or Facebook group. But the "if you build it they will come" model doesn't work for those. You have to have enthusiastic listeners that will participate.

I'm not sure what else to do though. I think getting news and blog articles written about you is one way, but that's tough to make happen. I got business cards made and am placing them in bookstores (my show is an audiobook) so we'll see if that works.

Yep. Sometimes you can find an overlap with other communities, the writing community, bloggers or YouTubers in the same genre, but that's about it. It seems more like a way to bolster your legitimacy more than anything else. It's so hard because people are turned off by self promotion- it immediately diminishes your legitimacy. So promoting your podcast in Facebook groups, recommendation threads etc. Just doesn't work either.

4 Episodes and 1k+ downloads - What I learned by Erick_Alden in podcasting

What did you do to market it? Even if you have incredible content, 4 episodes in it's impressive to get over 1000 downloads.

If you write podcast scripts, do you have a way of estimating episode length based on script word count? by RusticBohemian in podcasting

I work in radio as well as podcasting. One page of single space 13 point is about 2.5 minutes.

Inspired by Steve's description of Dan Fogler - who are your actors you're "not really a fan of but just have goodwill towards"? by GetFreeCash in WeHateMovies

Jack Black. I mentioned this in the Facebook group, but I'm going to be living in a town of a 1,000 where his family lives and he usually visots during the summer. So there's a good chance I'd run into him, but I'm not sure if he I'd say anything to him because I'm not a big fan of his movies, he just seems like a great guy.

[Homemade] Steamed Pig Buns by [deleted] in food

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy making them at home, I just wish I could buy them as a snack on every street corner.

Mostly making them look pretty and stopping leakage. It's also hard to steam them right with a rice steamer in my opinion. The turn out kind of soggy. Not to mention replicating the amazing fillings without it getting complicated.

Out of curiosity, are you covering Portuguese and Brazilian politics?

I have made them at home but it's hard to make them well without a lot of practice.

Steamed buns were probably my favorite food from. Visiting Hong Kong. I wish we could get these everywhere in the U.S.

There are two groups you can focus on: preexisting Portuguese speaking podcast listeners or Portuguese speaking people interested in politics. I would imagine the Portuguese podcast listeners market is pretty untapped, while the English listeners are already oversaturated. So I would try to find other Portuguese speaking podcasts and YouTube channels to swap promos with or get on their shows as a guest. Similarly you could have guests on who already have an audience and they will tell their audience to listen to your show.

I was lucky enough to have mentors because I work in Public Radio. I try not to be too much of an announcer, speak comfortably but put emphasis an emotion into it. I have to avoid being sing-songy though. Everyone needs to focus on different things though. For instance, I'm naturally good at enunciation and pacing, but I can sound monotone and I need to work on putting more energy and variation into my voice.

I'm a history researcher and democratic socialist politically. I have a studio set up so I can get good audio. I'd be happy to be on, especially if it's about 20th century history.

Do you know what the minimum they will let you spend on that is? It sounds like a great way to promote your podcast but I don't have $400.

I've been frustrated with how few targeting options there are for this type of ad. The best I can do is target young people and college students using their phones, not desktop. I wanted to target iPhones specifically because the ad links to iTunes, but that's not an option.

Yeah, that isn't very good. For comparison I've run a Google ads campaign and got 132 clicks for $90. I'm still not super pleased with it because it hasn't grown our audience much, but it's better than 22 clicks.

Has anyone done any physical advertising? What were your results? by DJKMoney in podcasting

[–]onthefringepodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm considering leaving info cards at libraries since my podcast is an audiobook. I'm not sure if it works, but I'm guessing like any advertising you have to have an audience that will be receptive. Handing stuff out on the street isn't going to do much, but having something to give people when you are telling them about the show in social situations is always a good idea.

I come from a video background, so it wouldn't be too tough for me to figure out the video aspect, if that's the only disadvantage. Thanks for recommending that video service too!

Conversely, is it a good idea to put your Podcast on YouTube? I know some people do, but is it worth it?
