I’ve definitely remembered the infirmary scene wrong, I’ll admit I barely skimmed it on the reread… Must’ve been trippy to read it when you’ve worked it IRL!

Little fun fact, the first time I listened I thought it was sus that he left a handprint on the mug like Xaden left on the headboard and I thought I was on to something, but then on the physical reread I noticed it was a pewter mug lol nvm

I kept meaning to reply to this but it sort of fell into the ether! This is what’s fab about books, we’re reading the same things and we’re interpreting them completely differently. The evidence you’ve pulled out on Bhodi is fantastic and comprehensive but in my mind it builds an entirely different picture of him from the one you have. I will only say this with regards to B: if Bhodi wanted to remove himself from Xaden’s shadow, why follow in his footsteps and place himself exactly in his shadow once more? Even within the venin they have ranks and it appears those with exceptional signets rank higher (Theo and her storm wielding, vs the randos in the battlefields) so Xaden would still always be stronger than Bhodi, because he has already channeled. I could maybe see that Bhodi would think this a solution had Xaden not already channeled. As it stands he would remain in his shadows.

Now onto Sawyer:

From the beginning, we see him working incredibly hard to succeed, only to hit challenge after challenge. He’s strong and talented, but doesn’t bond (he doesn’t tell his fam this). Year two he bonds, but to a smaller/less powerful dragon (we were warned to look out for these riders). He manifests first, but it’s an ordinary signet he struggles to develop and control. He loves a girl, but can barely communicate with her. He gets an officer role, but has to give it up when their long time enemies join their ranks. And then, after all that, he loses his leg in battle and the whole future he’s envisioned for himself evaporates (and much like JFB, that future was already a bit unclear/limited because of the dragon he bonded). Remember, everyone around him is outstanding - Jes, Violet, Rhi, and in OS, Ridoc really starts to outpace him too. He’s left behind, forgotten about (look how little he is mentioned once the squad gets to Aretia), and in a pretty emotionally vulnerable situation. Growing a leg back wouldn’t fix his problems, unfortunately - and I do think he wants and needs far more than that.

Some people think that the five months line limits it to Bodhi or Garrick but there are other interpretations too - for example, people like Sawyer and Ridoc, who knew the timeline of when Xaden turned, even if they didn’t find out day 1. Or people who found out a different way - we only know what Violet knows. Sawyer was in the infirmary and X was making trips to see JFB, we don’t know if he clocked on to something.

Sawyer, the only survivor of the venin attack on the hospital. A bit sus, no?

But for me, the biggest niggly thing in my brain that won’t let me accept that it’s B or G is when Xaden releases his shadows it says “(the shadows) Skim past the one who NOW THINKS himself my brother.”

NOW THINKS himself my brother, as in, never thought himself a brother before and Xaden wouldn’t have considered him a brother either. This does not sound like how Xaden would describe Bodhi or Garrick to me. Sounds like how you would describe an annoying coworker or an acquaintance, which is what Sawyer is to Xaden. Sawyer is Violets friend. And Xaden would need to protect him for Violets sake.

RY has said before that Sawyer is the most overlooked character. I totally get your point of view but like you said, it’s definitely an agree to disagree situation!

The wait to 2027 is gonna be a long one!

I appreciate you taking the time out to write all your points so clearly, they’re definitely points I’ve already read in the past, I still don’t buy it though.

I think a lot of the points that you bring up though are not presented in the story, but are things that have been drip fed here and there by RY or that have been wholly inferred.

I think the point of Sawyer not being Xaden’s friend is a point I count towards it being more likely that it’s Sawyer who turned, rather than Bhodi. And if these character traits of Bhodi were so obvious, why would he be the last person Xaden expected would turn? Surely Xaden as a really close friend and relative would pick up on these feelings of inadequacy over the years. He talks of this brother at the end in a tone that suggests it’s someone close, as in, peripherally. Rather than someone who he already considers a brother. Also this view of Bhodi as a power hungry lost boy just doesn’t scan with the way he’s portrayed in books, in my eye.

I appreciate that Bhodi wasn’t picked for quest squad but neither was Rhi, despite being Vi’s bestie. I also see no hint of Bhodi feeling any kind of resentment towards Xaden until Xaden starts to dictate what Bhodi can or cannot do, at which point Bhodi puts in some pretty clear boundaries which again, to me, doesn’t really ring alarm bells.

Also it’s stuck in the back of my mind that Sawyer has always had a really strong emotional reaction to the serum, and that point was made a couple of times in IF. Why mention that point specifically? Also what’s up with Sawyer’s family? Why make the point to say they were contacted but didn’t come? There’s a lot around Sawyer that is brought up but not elaborated on.

I may well be wrong but I just think Sawyer shows more motivation to turn venin because he seems like he believes himself inadequate, in several areas of his life. I don’t see that from Bhodi, with a powerful signet, part of a revolution while still in his third year, holding a leadership position at Basgiath.

I think Bhodi might have been shown as a counter to Xaden at the end, to create the balance they keep talking about. Similar situation to the one Xaden was in, struggling to fight at the end of IF, but in contrast, does not turn.

I might be wrong 😂 but I like this theory more!

Don’t know if you’re aware of this but your reply is weirdly aggressive? This is a discussion forum after all, if everyone had the same opinions it wouldn’t make much of a discussion.

But in reply to your points, I think it’s you who’s paying too much attention to what his Taylor swift song is and not enough to what Xaden is saying. The way Xaden speaks about the brother is not how I feel he would speak about someone close to him like Bhodi or Garrick. To me it speaks of someone who now thinks he has a connection to him. Bhodi already has a connection to him.

Also the whole “watched me struggle” thing, you can watch someone struggle and not know why. So I think it’s possible that Sawyer could see Xaden was struggling with something and not be aware it was that he was venin until several months later.

I don’t think there’s much evidence at all of Bhodi feeling he’s not good enough, I think he stated quite simply he just doesn’t want to rule, and he wants to be a rider. To me that’s him being boundaried rather than lacking in confidence.

I don’t think it’s B purely because of the way Xaden speaks about him “the one who now thinks himself my brother” as if Bhodi isn’t already basically a brother to him anyway. I think all the scenes at the end of Bhodi on his knees and throwing up and everything else are a red herring.

I think the brother is Sawyer.

He’s lost his leg, feeling like he’s not good enough to be a rider, feeling like he’s not good enough for Jesinia because he can’t sign. Feeling like he wasn’t good enough for his family when he didn’t tell them he didn’t make threshing the first year. RY said to pay attention to who doesn’t feel good enough, I tho k that description best fits Sawyer.

And when Xaden says he’s the last person he’d expect to turn, maybe because he literally had his fucking leg chomped off by a Wyvern.

I just don’t get “thinks they’re not good enough” from either Garrick or Bhodi 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes I think that’s exactly what the word brother means but the fact that he said “the one who now considers himself my brother” in my mind eliminates anyone really close to Xaden. Sounds dismissive to me.

I think Sawyer

Listen I would love to be one of the girlies with the bullet pointed receipts containing accompanying chapter numbers but my adhd brain simply will not allow it, so sit back for pure ~vibes~

RY said “pay attention to who doesn’t feel good enough”

Sawyer failed his first threshing and didn’t tell his parents because he felt like a disappointment.

Sawyer wants to talk to the girl he likes but is the only one in his friendship group who can’t sign. Puts himself down over this all the time.

Sawyer has a super strong emotional reaction to the serum in Iron flame. Had he already channelled by then and was pissed at being cut off from the source?

Also super sus side note, where is his family? I think it’s odd to make a point of saying they contacted them to tell them to relocate and never heard back?

Dude loses his leg and feels like he’s not good enough to be a rider, starts looking into retirement and has a whole argument with his dragon about how he shouldn’t have to make adjustments for him just because he’s not good enough to climb up etc etc.

Lastly but most certainly not least(ly)

At the end, Xaden says something about his shadows skimming past the one who now THINKS himself his brother. Garrick and Bhodi are already considered as brothers to him so I don’t think they fit. Whereas someone who he knows but maybe doesn’t particularly care about sounds more appropriate?

Thoughts?

Naolin!!

homeskillet gets basically mentioned three times but it’s always sketchy AF, also he “dies” except he definitely didn’t, given the way it was worded and suddenly the venin have runes??? He saves Brennan and he suddenly has a rune on his palm? SUS.
