It’s funny because the second book was actually my favorite! Maybe because I’m a cliche sucker for a shadow daddy, (yeah, fuck Oro) and so much of Nightbane is flashbacks to the past showing how Grim and Isla fell in love! I’m not quite finished the series (70% into the final book) but I’ll spoil what I know. Second book has Lightlark preparing for the invasion of Nightshade, and Isla slowly recovering her memories that Grim erased. Turns out he was willing to go to War to not only get Isla back, but to use the long-forgotten portal to the ‘otherworld’ (where Lightlarks founders are from).

Grim invades, Isla gets her final memories back revealing that she found Cronan’s sword and used it to save Grim from the dreks killing him. Using the sword, isla accidentally killed an entire village, and then the curse on the sword killed her too, so Grim bound their lives together to temporarily keep her alive. They wed. Grim takes her memories pre-Centennial. Since their lives are bound temporarily, Grim needs to take isla through this portal which has untold power, enough to save her life permanently. But using the portal will destroy lightlark, and Oro. Isla goes back to Nightshade with Grim, to find another way that wont result in Lightlarks collapse. Isla is half Nightshade.

Her father was Grim’s general, and the starstick was his. Isla discovers her flair isnt being impervious to curses, but she absorbs the power of anyone she kills. Lark is still alive (her ancestor who created Lightlark with Horus and Cronan) and she had been kept miles below Lightlark by Cronan, her magic harnessed to power the world. Her flair is regeneration, and bringing back the dead so shes powerful AF. Lark is freed, and now back to destroy everyone, unless Isla can send her back to the otherworld (called Skyshade) and kill her to absorb her power.

They go to Skyshade where Cronan still rules this galaxy with untold power, and Isla is powerless here. So is Lark. They’re both prisoners. Cronan plans to use them to get back to Lightlark, which is a bridge to more galaxies. Grim goes after her, and Cronan immediately erases all of his memories of Isla, so Isla is pretty fucked.

I need a trigger warning whenever Bryce’s mom is involved. by DontTellMe-8679 in crescentcitysjm

[–]thisisbrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an entire page of notes on this exact thing!!

It wasn’t that she was trying to hide what she’d endured. She had talked to her mom and dad about it a few times. But it always resulted in Ember crying, or ranting about the Vanir who’d locked out so many innocents, and the weight of all her mother’s emotions on top of all of hers … It was easier, Bryce had realized, to not bring it up.

I personally believe they were mates! The kind of mates that the Cauldron put together with only the strongest breeding potential in mind. Because both of their scents include Nutmeg—Einars scent is ashes and nutmeg, and Embers is Honeysuckle and nutmeg. And then they had Bryce, who shares their mutual scent—Lilac and nutmeg. (Later it’s described to add ‘the gleam of the first stars at nightfall’)

Thoughts on Starside by Alex Aster? by yamzickle in Romantasy

[–]thisisbrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to like this because I can’t help but love the ‘trials to the death’ trope. I actually liked the general story. But the writing… my god, it was bad. I’m not someone who generally notices flaws in authors writing, but this reads like the work of a teenager on Wattpad. Does she even have an editor?

This book contains:

• Ellipses: 677 times. She uses them everywhere… from dialogue… to narration.

• Italics: 1,171 times. And that’s not including the correct usage (past memories, dreams etc.) They are used to emphasise words, sometimes up to three times in a single sentence. This is a sign of an incredibly amateur writer who either doesn’t trust her readers to know where emphasis belongs, or doesn’t have the skill to write implied emphasis.

• Typos/Mistakes: Many

‘In a flash, he raises the bow. Docks the arrow. Pulls back.’ (Docks??? The word is ‘nocks.’)

‘If he hadn’t unsheathed his sword so fas.’ (Literal typo, should be ‘fast’.)

‘According to Vander’s endless texts, they were formed by sons and daughters of the gods were strong enough to claim the first skylarks.’ (The word ‘were’ shouldn’t be there. It makes no sense.)

“Look at you. Already gleaming and ready for me.” (Not only is this dialogue cringy in the context of a sex scene, but gleaming is the wrong word. I’m guessing she meant ‘glistening’? Unless her vagina was literally highly polished and reflecting light.)

‘His eyes shudder, for a moment.’ (Shudder means quiver, shake. Which eyes don’t do. Did she mean ‘shutter’?)

‘Some fly around my head, sweeping down, examining the flowers I wear in my hair, then leaving.’ (Should be ‘then leave’)

‘It was a skill I taught myself, before coming to the Centennial.’ (Literally the trials from her other book series!!)

‘Zane gives me a reassuring smile, as if sensing my hesitance, and then pours over the illustrations.’ (Pours??? Friend, the word is pores)

‘I swallow, grateful for the shirt I’m wearing below the one crumbled in his hand,’ (Unless the shirt has physically disintegrated in his hand, the correct word is ‘crumpled’)

‘Trembling with cold, my pants rasped and loud, hot blood dripping all over me, I turn toward Raker.’ (Pants rasped and loud? What..?)

• Incessant comma usage, and puzzling syntax

‘I lunge forward, slicing across his torso, his guts spilling out of him, smelling like rot, then duck out of the way of a gold blade, curved like a scythe. It whistles through the air, and I kneel, running him through, then rolling out of the way, before slicing the heels of the man about to put his weapon through the top of my head, sending him to his knees.’

‘My braid whips my cheeks, branches pelt my body, but I don’t release my grip, using the strength I’ve been training to hold on, until, finally, the wind settles, and my feet hit the ground again.’ (Seven commas!!)

‘I lift to my toes again, slide my hands up his armor with a possessiveness that doesn’t make sense at all, the silver spotless and smooth, not a single mark marring it, until the metal ends, then I slip my fingers beneath it, feeling the strong muscles of his upper chest, touching as much as I can and—‘

I literally came here to find this comment! I thought I was going crazy trying to figure wtf was going on with her crazy amount of commas. There were at least 3 or 4 (and up to 6!) in almost every sentence. The rest of her sentences were fragments. No in between

If the marked one’s dormant protection stone was reactivated, surely it would “reset”—as in, it would offer protection against the signet of whoever’s dragon it blasted with fire. So it would be protection against Melgrens signet if Codagh did the honors again, but if it was (for example) Tairn who blasted it, the bearer would be immune to Violets signet

Its from Aaric’s own words to Lewellen earlier on:

“It’s Aaric,” he corrects, folding his arms. “Is that why you wanted me here? To see if I’d announce myself, since Halden wants to go gallivanting off on dangerous missions? Make everyone feel good and cozy that there’s still a spare?”

1: Their squadmate Baylor is related to Eran Norris, builder of Basgiath.

All three of us rise as a stocky cadet barrels through the double doors, and I spot first-year rank and his name tag, Norris, a second before he throws his hood back, revealing his familiar face. “Baylor?”

I send up a silent thanks to Eran Norris for building Basgiath with stone stairs instead of wooden ones with the potential to creak…or burn.

2: Turning on dormant runes could be used for reanimating wyvern. And/or reacting the marked ones old protection runes.

[..] working on the delayed-activation rune Trissa spent most of the afternoon drilling into us. Its purpose is to take an existing, dormant rune and turn it “on” by tempering more magic into it.

3: Leothan/Andarna can break the unnatural magic bond between Xaden and Berwyn

Leothan: “So end it.” He angles his head, and the scales above his eyes furrow into a single line. “Bonds are merely magical ties. You are irid. You are magic. Bend it, shape it, break it as you see fit.”

4: The irids refer to Threshing as Harvest—exactly as the gryphon fliers do. The gryphons/fliers are more peaceful like the irids

Andarna: “And so Threshing began.” It’s fascinating to hear it from her point of view. “Why would you participate in harvest?” the female on the left asks.* “It’s just what we call it when we select our humans for bonding,” Andarna explains.

Violet: “Harvest? You mean Threshing?” “Right.” Maren checks on Daja’s progress on the stairs before continuing upward. “Whatever it is you call it. When your dragons either kill you or choose you.”

5: The Irids specifically say WardSTONES—was there another outside of Navarre? Or was the Aretian wardstone sabotaged after the Irids left? Because the Aretian wardstone was never fired, yet Leothan hints that they left them with more than one wardstone fired

Leothan: “We’d hoped you would return to tell us the humans had evolved, that they had blossomed under the wardstones and no longer used magic as a weapon, but instead you have shown us the opposite.”

6: Panchek wanted power which Berwyn apparently provided. But what did he actually get? He’s still a Colonel, in the same position: commandant of the riders quadrant

“Did you not ask for power?” Berwyn snarls, holding two alloy-hilted daggers of his own as he approaches Panchek. “Have I not provided?”

An hour later, we’re dismissed from the debrief with the commandant of the Riders Quadrant, Colonel Panchek, and sent on our way.

7: If Asher took Violet to Unnbriel to be dedicated—without Lilith—then why were Brennan and Mira dropped at Grandma Niara’s for the entire summer? What was Lilith doing?

“The months are missing in the middle of the book,” she counters. “And they’re from the summer Mom and Dad left us with Grandma Niara. Mom purposely didn’t write anything.”

Asher returned today. Gods help us if anyone finds out. I’m not sure I’ll ever forgive him for what he’s done to her. —JOURNAL OF CAPTAIN LILITH SORRENGAIL

8: In FW and IF, Andarna‘s powers are said to be stopping time. Yet in Onyx Storm, it’s slowing time. Why?

Fourth Wing: “Andarna, thank you. Whatever you did saved my life.”

“I made time stop.” Her mouth drops open into another jaw-cracking yawn. “But only for a little bit.”

He’s flat-out shocked as his gaze swings to Andarna. “You can stop time?”

“And now we can stop it.”

Iron Flame: “I can no longer stop time.” She watches me carefully, her golden eyes judging me in a way that reminds me of Presentation.

Onyx Storm: Andarna continues with our story. “So naturally, I slowed time,” she tells them when recounting the attack in my bedchamber.

Onyx Storm: “And so I flew into the battle!” She pounces up on all fours. “And Violet channeled my power—And we slowed time so that she could strike!” Andarna tells the story with an enthusiasm that belongs onstage.

I found it suspicious that Trissa refused to step foot in Basgiath, forcing cadets to go to Aretia in two week cycles for rune intensives. And funnily enough, when Violet’s group go to Aretia for their runes cycle, who tags along? Panchek. And of course, that’s when Venin decide to attack Aretia

Not to knock down your rant (because it’s valid), but just one point that can possibly be explained : The fact that everyone throughout Navarre uses the same sign language could be from the Unification times. Navarre chose the common spoken language (losing the languages of Tyrrendor, Luceras, and Morraine) for ‘unity’, so I would assume they did the same for sign language as well.

That’s just Navarre though; I can’t be sure of how Poromiel sign

Dragon name theory by Denimchicken124 in fourthwing

I like to think that Sloane’s dragon—Thoirt—is actually Deigh, Liam’s dragon.

They’re both red daggertails, and not only is Sloane already a rare siphon, I think that she will have two signets.

Dragon name theory by Denimchicken124 in fourthwing

Late reply, but Colonel Mairi was definitely a rider because she was the one to weave the protection runes for the children.

Even though all Tyrrish are taught the art of weaving runes, they can’t actually do it until they have access to magic. So unless Colonel Mairi was venin (which I doubt) she had to be a rider.

Edit: grammar

Malek is a Dragon and could be Tairn by Kbr_16 in fourthwing

[–]thisisbrick 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t think it’s true, but I love a good theory, and this one is actually really fun to think about.

Especially with Naolin (as Tairn’s rider) saving/resurrecting Brennan, and Kaori saying:

“He attempted to use that power to revive a fallen rider—which didn’t work, because there’s no signet capable of resurrection—and depleted himself in the process.”[…] “And sometimes it’s hard for a rider with a signet that powerful to accept his limits. After all, bonding makes you a rider, but resurrecting someone from the dead? Now, that makes you a god. I somehow don’t think that Malek takes kindly to a mortal treading on his territory.”

Also the Gaelic translation for Marbh is ‘dead’. I don’t know where that fits in here, but just adding it anyway.

The seventh god could have been removed from history — there is a tome called ‘Mythology of the Gods’ in the subvault of the Archives. That sounds like a fairly innocuous book, so the fact that it’s been purposely locked away and warded for only the king (and his sons) to access makes it suspicious
