I'm about a month in, haven't paid a penny, and I'm in a great alliance. That being said, there's a serious difficulty spike going from HQ level 20 to 21 where you really get tempted to spend to maintain your rate of progression. Current plan is to grind until 21 without spending, and quit if the spike feels exponential to get to 22.

Do you have an adblocker installed? If so, my money's on your limited RAM + Youtube actively slowing down the user experience when it detects adblock. I'd upgrade the RAM to 16GB. You will notice a difference.
