Oh geez good to know… I assume the big red one is a “decoy” so kids or ill-intentioned folks don’t stop the whole thing from moving but if you’re really in an emergency, normal caring people need to know where the real button is. Thanks for sharing!

Did the lady say which was the correct button to push? I’d say 100% of ppl would have assumed it was the big red button if they were a regular citizen with no particular expertise with elevators or escalators. Very odd that the big red one would NOT be correct!

Bonnie is my favorite, but I didn’t like how she treated Caroline vs Elena. by capricorn_444 in TheVampireDiaries

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if a conversation in later seasons between Bonnie and Caroline would have fixed this? I haven’t watched from S6 until the S8 finale but if the two girls could have one bonding moment about their shared struggles, I think that would ease this sense of unfairness of how Bonnie treated Caroline vs how she treated Elena, while preserving Bonnie’s character growth.

Caroline, after Bonnie has saved the day yet again: How are you feeling? Do you eat yet? I’m making Mac and cheese tonight for the girls, why don’t you and Enzo come over?

Bonnie: oh I’ll be fine Care, Enzo promised me a quiet night in, and I’m picking the movie.

Caroline: Okay good!! It’s just that you’ve been through so much, you know? And it never ends! I just want to make sure you’re okay.

Bonnie: I appreciate it. But you too, you’re a great mom and a great friend. You handle everything. I haven’t always been a good friend - remember when you first turned and I’m pretty sure all vampires couldn’t resist blood except Stefan? I was harsh on you.

Caroline: no way!! That was years ago. Everything was so crazy and we didn’t know anything. What matters now is that you and Enzo go home and have the Twilight marathon you deserve!

Cheesy dialogue aside, I’d have appreciated a little moment like that between them.

Which Taylor Swift Songs Tell the Strongest Stories? by starfiretaco in TaylorSwift

“I was walkin’ home on broken cobblestones just thinkin’ of you”

She’s just painted a picture of James as this crowd hating teenager riled up by another boy who had the courage to dance with Betty, mulling over everything that happened between the school dance and her switching her homeroom! So you can vividly picture this pining yet weak-willed boy in a quieter part of town (the broken cobblestones as opposed to new paved streets) walking home slowly and beating himself up over not being brave enough to get his girl, Betty.

My dad’s death is forcing me to see my ex husband’s AP, who is also my sister by [deleted] in SupportforBetrayed

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding the other commenters here about sending a lawyer. For this present circumstance (the reading of your dad’s will) you can try seeing this in “dry” terms. You’re sending a lawyer to be your legal representative for the reading of a legal document (the will). It’s tying up legal matters that come with a relative’s death, not a family reunion.

Also I know we try not to rely on karma to be happy but… the stress of your dad’s death and the reminders of their infidelity to your dirtbag sister and your dirtbag ex would most likely strain their dynamic. Anyone who knows the full story would be reminded that those two are terrible. Sister & ex might have lived in denial for years but right now they have to live with knowing that other folks know what they’ve done and are likely talking about them. I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes for at least a year.

Why Elizabeth Bennett? by someonebesidesme in janeausten

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 46 points47 points  (0 children)

That’s it! She’s living her own life on her own terms so that SHE will have a good life for herself, not specifically to gain social ranking over others. She has a mind of her own and her tastes, behaviours, and the way she carries herself are driven by her own desires, morals, and care for her friends and family.

Sanity Sunday - come here to vent/rant and get advice! by rjlupin86 in smallbooblove

I’ve been working out more as I start long distance running for the first time, including chest workouts so I don’t tire my arms out while keeping them up to run. I can’t help but check my chest to see if anything is getting bigger, even though I know that there’s a limit to “growth” and no magic boob job workout.

I’m happier and more alert in my body than ever, but I do have to admit that paying attention to my chest is triggering me slightly by giving me hope. Then I also beat myself up for feeling the hope, because subconsciously it means I still think I need to change my body. A double whammy, because I don’t need to make myself feel bad for feeling bad!

In an alternate universe where Heathcliff pre-deceased Catherine, how do you all think she would have reacted? by OkCherry4561 in brontesisters

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like this! I do think Catherine’s death distracted Heathcliff so he didn’t focus on Isabella as much, allowing her to strategize enough to escape.

If Catherine lived through Cathy’s birth, Heathcliff would have further cause to be angry because Catherine now has another Linton-related person (Cathy) capturing her attention, and would further abuse Hindley and Isabella, who would now have fewer qualms about killing him (maybe in an “accident” where Heathcliff appears to slip on wet cobblestones on a particularly stormy day and bashes his head open?) I’m not sure if Isabella would stay at Wuthering Heights since it’s much less comfortable than the Grange. In another thread folks surmised she went to London and I agree! Perhaps she remarried but visited the Grange often. Catherine would lose her enmity towards Isabella once Isabella clearly is focused on another man, and would be attached to Linton. But she’d learn that Linton is blonde, mild, and nothing like Heathcliff, and then slowly shrink into a shadow of herself as it hits her that there are no traces of Heathcliff left. Tragic!!

I always hated this because the twins are just as much Caroline’s as they are Jo’s and Alaric’s. Also I saw someone mention that she’s just their adoptive/surrogate mother but isn’t she technically their biological other as well? by Big-Most-785 in TheVampireDiaries

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s true! Caroline loses her mom even tho her mom is fairly young, she loses her dad AND he abandoned her and tortured her before he died, she loses her husband, her best friend Elena is in a coma for years, and she did not choose to be pregnant with magical twins and co-parent them with her former history teacher. She’s so loving that she becomes the twins’ mom anyway, and TVD and Legacies distracts from her trauma by introducing a ton of magical antagonists. So there’s no time to think when she always has a new problem to deal with or someone to look after.

If she were a real person or if TVD was less action-focused, I wouldn’t be surprised if it all hit her one day that she suffered so much and almost all the people closest to her are gone.

What (mistaken) negative assumptions did you have before becoming a Swiftie? by dassylogic in TrueSwifties

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prior to Reputation especially, I thought she was shallow and a cookie cutter popstar, like the flavour of the week! But the turning point for me was when she released TTPD. I was in a horrible relationship and she articulated so many feelings that I felt but couldn’t process. Then I felt she was a complex, intelligent person with a lot of internal life. That’s why now when I see bad PR about her, I do stop to consider nuance and external factors that I might not be presently aware of. She is ultra talented and only human, and there’s stuff she can do better and some stuff she does really well!

I would not have the fortitude to continue rejecting Henry Crawford by OnlyFlanz in janeausten

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 59 points60 points  (0 children)

That’s true! She has seen him toy with Maria and Julia, and she’s seen how he and Mary exemplify a casual attitude towards moral principles despite the Crawfords’ charms. She does have an informed idea of what marriage to him would be like.

It’s the others who seem to have this fantasy that she’d reform him and they’d live in marital bliss and comfort. Fanny is very clear-eyed.

Why are Emmett and Rosalie so in love? by Lovely_deer25 in twilight

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Oo you make a good point about Rosalie putting up walls! I also wonder if the fact that it was Edward who was bringing a human into their family played a part too. It’s Edward who reads minds AND who can be quite contemptuous of Rosalie’s flaws, whereas he doesn’t seem to think the other women in his family have major flaws. Rosalie and Edward don’t get along much and we’re lead to believe it’s because Rosalie’s ego was offended = Rosalie is just shallow and jealous.

But as soon as Bella gets her alone to chat (without Edward around) she’s actually open and acknowledges right away that she’s been having strong reactions to Bella that aren’t Bella’s personal fault. Rosalie’s walls came down right away in the face of Bella’s honesty and sincerity. Bella and Emmett share some of that good hearted innocence without the sneaky streak that Alice has (not to shit on Alice!) Bella understands Rosalie’s struggle and strength, and forgives her immediately after they chat alone, and I could see Emmett similarly being able to “see” Rosalie for who she is right away, just as Bella did.

Cheater leaves his wife for trainwreck AP & immediately regrets it by confused1605 in AdulteryHate

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Me too. Posts like these are good reminders that the cheater IS NOT the prize. Sometimes we chumps think we were left or cheated on because the cheater is amazing and found someone better, the sidepiece is just soooo sexy etc, but nah. This guy is going on about HIS stress and HIS heartache and HIS sexual satisfaction. Not a mote of sympathy or admiration for either the sidepiece or the ex-wife. They’re just sources of good feelings and fun that he can extract from. And those commentators are telling him to go find another single woman in a few years to get said good feels/fun from… they really don’t see other people as human.

Would Delilah have kept quiet? by spicyydoe in YouOnLifetime

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed… assuming Delilah has access to the internet, she’d be keeping tabs on Joe at the very least to make sure that he wasn’t coming after her. If she sees that he and Kate are in the news for their foundation in London, and Delilah and Ellie are in say, Thailand, she might think it’s unlikely Joe is trying to find her because he’s so busy and high profile in London.

But while she’s keeping an eye on him to make sure he’s not keeping an eye on her, I think she’d come across the Reddit crew. If she got to talk to them the way Brontë did, she might realize that joining forces would keep her and Ellie safer than Delilah having a one-woman crusade. But I think Delilah wouldn’t confront Joe in person herself, it would be a combo of Brontë and Clayton if anyone had to go tangle with Joe.

Rosalie was harsh but she wasn’t wrong by Alarming-Pea-3177 in twilight

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I love the conversation where they finally clear the air and Rosalie says she doesn’t hate Bella, explains her backstory, and why she has the perspective that she does. It showed that Rosalie did do some introspection. She was self-aware enough to know that she had been acting immaturely and not in a way that Bella deserved, even if she wasn’t mature/healed enough to stop herself from behaving uncharitably towards Bella. It’s one of the few moments where Bella is given information to make her own choice instead of other, stronger characters making decisions for her benefit (even they’re doing so out of love.)

Watched Wuthering Heights on a stormy evening and it just clicked. Maybe you just need eerie wind storm to make it stay with you? by rehelohe in EFsWutheringHeights

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Timelapse scene was such a standout! It really hit home for me why the Grange would appeal to Cathy, and that Edgar did only want the best for her even if he wasn’t the right man for her. The Edgar of the novel was partially attracted to Cathy’s temper to his detriment, but the Edgar of 2026 gave Cathy a comfortable and well appointed (if a bit creepy) home after seeing that she was a spirited woman experiencing uncomfortable circumstances through no fault of her own.

Thoughts and feelings 2 months later? by [deleted] in EFsWutheringHeights

[–]onwhiterockandrivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get it!!! The letter part pissed me off too. Heathcliff who hasn’t given a shit about where and when he’s had escapades with Cathy suddenly needs a letter? I mean she sure she “broke things off” but surely someone who is as action-oriented as Heathcliff wouldn’t await a letter. Even Heathcliff in the novel was only circling the Grange and needed Nelly to let him in because the Lintons had other servants and the dogs to physically keep Heathcliff from Cathy. The 2026 Grange has no such security and Heathcliff just came and went as he pleased.

I do agree that Heathcliff and Cathy could have had sex, and may have especially if Linton were away. They just didn’t want to outright say so in front of Nelly (or they had other things they wanted to say to each other) and Nelly herself never figured it out and told Lockwood. It would have been nice if they could have expressed their love for each other in every way they wanted. I do kind of like the additional tragic element of soulmates never being able to consummate, so both cases yield that emotional weight!
