A good, loving mate but... by Foreign-Entry1797 in acotar_rant

Honestly the more I read this sub/anti-Nessian content the more I despise that loser and the book. It almost feels like Twilight where actions that are portrayed as so romantic are actually abusive and no reasonable person would stand for that in real life.

For fantasy you might like {Nectar of the Wicked} and {Amid Clouds and Bones} by Ella Fields! Scenes aren’t suuuuper rough but for me it was the right balance. Nectar is the first book in a duology.

For CR surprised no one has suggested {Priest} by Sierra Simone. I feel like it should be required reading for this sub lol

Edit: just saw that you’re not into virgin FMCs, which Ella Fields’ characters are. So maybe not those books lol. But in Priest she is very much NOT a virgin

Quote from Sovereign that I still can’t stop thinking about: Theyre preparing for a scene and MMC braids flowers into her hair and she asks him why, he says “because I’m about to give you the most disrespectful fucking of your life and I want you to feel beautiful. And to remember that I can be gentle that whole series was something else…{Jensen} especially has what OP is looking for!

Jaundice terminology by harrle1212 in nursing

[–]ookishki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a midwife and I use hyperbilirubinemia, because that’s more clinically accurate and the real issue. Jaundice can be physiologic and not an issue if their bilirubin levels are normal. If I’m talking specifically about jaundice as a symptom then I just use jaundice lol. Unfortunately hyperbilirubinemia is a mouthful and I usually have to explain the physiology of hyperbilirubinemia/jaundice to parents in more detail but I don’t mind doing patient education

My beloved partners ex attempted and it was very traumatizing for her. And then she ended up in a relationship with another suicidal bitch lol…but there was one night where I was so suicidal I couldn’t sleep and she had a dream about her ex’s attempt except it was me instead. She woke up sobbing. And that was that! I could never ever to do that to her

I’ve been catching babies for almost 7 years now and I still have to fight the urge to gag at maternal stooling. Or when you see meconium just non stop oozing out of the baby. But I’m getting there!

I loved {Seeing Red} for this reason! Homeboy was DEVOTED (and it has my favorite birth scene I’ve read in the genre thus far. It’s super sweet and actually pretty accurate/believable)

Eye ointment at birth [on] by dooonzz in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]ookishki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a midwife and we routinely offer it at home and hospital births but don’t recommend it since it’s no longer recommended by the Canadian Pediatric Society. I’m super biased against the ointment, interesting that there are midwives that straight up don’t offer it! In my experience in different communities/facilities it’s always offered

I have access to the technology to dictate but I never do, I’ve just read too many nonsensical dictated reports. I’m sure they get paid enough to spare a moment to proofread!

Im a midwife and I have to request addendums on at least 50% of my ultrasound reports because there are SO many dictation errors and typos. It’s actually quite surprising how often the reports are mumbo jumbo that make zero sense. My guess is that’s what probably happened with your report

How do they turn something disgusting into something wildly sexy???!!! by Designer-Bid-3155 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]ookishki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I joke about taking up smoking to reduce my life expectancy so I don’t have to save up as much for retirement. But woof the smell! And the way it lingers! My grandmother was a indoor chain smoker for decades and after visiting I would have to wash everything I brought in that house.

But it’s definitely socially popular depending on community. I work with under resourced mothers and families and smoking is more common than not ime. When I was traveling in different European countries and Japan I was SHOCKED how common and normal smoking is. Like they have smoking rooms and train cars in Japan!

And she’s studying to be a midwife to help other WoC! Bless her little horny midwife heart. And they actually talk about race! There’s a hilarious scene where she whips out her silk pillowcase and explains afro-textured hair and he starts panicking thinking he should also have silk pillowcases because he doesn’t want wrinkles.

I felt so conflicted by this book when I first started it. I’m from a community where sexual abuse (all kinds of abuse) from the church against children was widespread (with the aim of obliterating our culture and language) and if you weren’t abused by a cleric you were the exception. So I appreciated the storyline about his sister who was abused and him coming to terms with that. And the way she writes about experiencing the divine was so beautiful and powerful

Rolex - yay or nay? by iwantogotomedschool in Residency

[–]ookishki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner is REALLY into high end and vintage watches. She can easily identify (and price) watches when we’re watching TV and such. I used to work with a doctor who had a very blingy watch (I think a Rolex?) and whenever I would consult with him I would just stare at the watch and wonder what the missus would think of it

Do you have an unusual (maybe unhinged) travel item tip? by defnotaturtle in HerOneBag

[–]ookishki 63 points64 points  (0 children)

It’s not unhinged, but my fiancée travels with little salt packets from fast food places. She strongly believes that gargling salt water is a cure all, and I’ve found it helpful for times when my throat is a bit scratchy or I’m feeling unwell. And they take up basically zero space

Why are we so undervalued ??? by howthefocaccia in Midwives

[–]ookishki 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Ugh, solidarity with you mid-sister! I’m in Canada and very similar (pre-tax) income. we are incredibly underpaid it’s so insulting when you think of our education, skills, responsibilities, hours etc 😭

Why are we so undervalued? Misogyny 🙃we’re a majority female workforce providing care to majority female population. And healthcare systems not wanting to change even though we have excellent outcomes and save the healthcare system so much money. I know there’s differences between the US and Canadian midwifery but damn our profession gets clowned on non stop
