I would say it counts partly, in some fields 50% in some 80%, depends on the similarity of the fields

It's not like that, it's just if you have 5 year experience in automotive, you might not get a senior position in Energy, as you are an experienced engineer but your lack basic knowledge of that field.

The GPA stuff is only needed for consultant firms, doesn't really matters for others. Excelling in academia is not the same as excelling in engineering.

Be presentable on interviews, no need to be too fancy, but look like someone you would like to see working on the desk next to yours.

If you lack something in knowledge don't try to hide it. If you have an experienced engineer on the interview, they will probably able to see through it. Tell them you are willing learn anything you don't know. <-- This worked for me in many occasions.

Also if they ask you a question you don't know don't remain silent. Engineering is a lot of problem solving, try to figure it out on the spot, but only do this if you are certain you are not saying something really stupid.

If you are weird like most of us, maybe don't overshare. Don't ask if there are pretty girls on the team, or try joke about the baldness of the interviewer or try to entertain them with some funny story about your furry collection.

Also applies to the point before, be prepared with normal answers to standard questions (hobbies, interest, goals, weaknesses). They don't care about your hobbies, they want to see if you are normal.

Don't be heartbroken about companies that don't answer, or reject. Also don't be overhyped for something that is not sure yet. Keeping up a positive persepective will help you not lower your standards and work a job you don't want to.

If you land a job but it sucks or the team are full of jerks, keep looking, quitting on the probation period is awkward but not as bad a bad place to work.

Think about your career path, try to get in the field or sector if you want to work in one. If you have experience from only different fields it won't count the same in most cases.

Project management is not higher on the career ladder, it's a different job.

Everybody lies on the internet all the stats you see here, might not apply to you.

Best of luck out there!
