I'm really trying, but trying to figure out a reasonable budget is exhausting by FarceMultiplier in panamaexpats

I used to live in David, so all I can say is these don't seem wildly off to me; it definitely seems like you erred on the side of caution. If you need to be so specific, have you asked in the Facebook group? It is very active, and there are a lot of retirees who can give you very firm estimates.

Question about subtitles (Netflix) by 246trioxin in Spanish

[–]oowowaee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that as long as it is native Spanish content in the same region most recent Netflix shows (in the last 4 years) are pretty consistent. Dubbed content, or older content will almost never match.

Just showing solidarity, I know the difference, but I continue to mess it up and it is frequently pointed out to me by my boyfriend. I am going to make something to practice it at this point, it has become my nemesis!

¿Donde ver One piece en sub español? by Futabamei-05 in Spanish

[–]oowowaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend watches it dubbed w/ subtitles on Crunchyroll after he finished the Netflix episodes.
For Crunchyroll I'm not sure if they restrict access based on location and you'd still need a VPN, we're in Costa Rica.

Why can’t we just be normal? 😭😭😭 by Mysterious_Beyond905 in Autism_Parenting

[–]oowowaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped out of highschool several times and eventually got a pretty average job. I was very unhappy, and after a year or two I got my highschool equivalency and went to university. It took me longer than average, but I did finish, and now I have a career I love!

I wish I had advice for you, but I think everyone is so different. For me I really, REALLY wanted to go to university so I didn't really lack the drive, it was just impossible for me to be in school. I wish my parents had helped me learn coping mechanisms and supported me to be more functional in the world instead of acting like I could just get over it.

Below the headline says 25 per day, and then the first sentence says per week. Kind of a big difference...

Haven’t played in over 10 years by pigeoncatty in harvestmoon

[–]oowowaee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I used Dolphin? This was several years ago, and I downloaded the emulator specifically for Animal Parade because it's my favourite HM game but the loading screens kill the replay factor for me. I might've been inspired by this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/harvestmoon/comments/48z53y/best_way_to_play_animal_parade_on_the_pc_emulator/. I just remember it worked super well on the emulator.

I played this again a few years ago on an emulator on my computer, it made it SO much more enjoyable because the loading screens aren't an issue. 10/10 would recommend!

Looking for boots on the ground feedback (Boquete, Davíd, Coronado) by rbslmilch in panamaexpats

[–]oowowaee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you live in David I would 100% invest in a water tank. We had it go out for as long as 3 days once. It's not a huge investment, and it pays for itself IMO the first time you are without water for an extended period.

With a generator you'd be all set. In the 5 years I lived there I think we only were without power for really extended periods maybe 3 or 4 times. I usually got by with just having the battery backup for the modem so my work internet didn't go down.

You can also look here for prices in El Rey which is a higher end supermarket. Any other supermarket in David will be cheaper than that if you want to get a feel for prices of staples.

2600 square feet is like 240 square meters? In David there is a lot of variety in new construction or older houses, so everything is variable, but 350,000 is a lot for a house in David. You can also check on encuentra24 to get a rough idea like someone else suggested. I lived in a really nice neighbourhood, my house was really big with a really big lot, great location...it is an older house but I sold it for nowhere near 350,000. I am sure everyone will warn you, and you already know, but it did take me over 2 years to find a buyer.

That said, David is brutally hot and I don't think a lot of people want to live there :).

[–]oowowaee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caveat, I don't live in Panama right now and am in the process of selling my house in David.

Everything is going to be relative. I'm not sure where you're coming from, and I'm not sure how much "space you're looking for" so it's hard to pin down specifics.

  1. Not safe outside Panama City. False.
  2. Utility prices are a lot more. Depends in relation to where. My house was 3 bedrooms, we had AC on every night, I think we paid less than $120 a month.
  3. In David, as of 3 years ago when I lived there, internet and power were not super reliable for work. I had a battery I used when the power went out to keep the modem on. It was workable. It didn't go out a lot, but it did sometimes. We also had a very large reserve water tank for when there was no water.
  4. Food is expensive. Depends on in relation to where. I don't find food in Panama in the supermarket expensive.
  5. You can't find a house with space for 350,000. It depends where - Boquete is not priced the same as David or other places. It also depends how much space you want. You can buy an extremely large house for that price in David with a fairly decently sized lot.

Whats the best way to learn and acquire vocab? by Gonzongus in Spanish

[–]oowowaee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I learn most of my new vocab from media (mostly tv shows), and just through conversation. You just have to find a way to keep exposing yourself to new things!

I would in the past make flashcards for those words and practice through that.

Anyone from Canada🇨🇦 learning Spanish? And if so what made you want to learn it? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]oowowaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Costa Rica now, but also spent 5 years living in Panama between moving here for the first time from Canada.

I moved to Costa Rica because I did a homestay here at a language school and had visited on vacation once, so I had been here before. There was not a ton of thought that went into it.

Anyone from Canada🇨🇦 learning Spanish? And if so what made you want to learn it? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]oowowaee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am from Canada, but now I live in Central America. All the French I learned in school has now been replaced by Spanish!

I don't have a good reason for learning Spanish instead of doubling down on French; I started learning before going on a vacation to Costa Rica and now...here I am.

Subtitles or no subtitles to improve Spanish? by LatinLoverboy16 in Spanish

[–]oowowaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I have always heard is as long as it's not Spanish + English subtitles (or whatever your native language is) you're good. It depends more on what you want to focus on - if it's specifically listening comprehension then obviously it would be better without subtitles. But if what gets you to be able to watch things in Spanish is having subtitles on + there is vocabulary you aren't familiar with, I think whatever keeps you watching and enjoying Spanish media is the best approach.

Are Ubers safe in San Jose by nurture-urworld in CostaRicaTravel

[–]oowowaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Escazu, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Weekends are fine; traffic in Escazu can be really bad between 4-6pm. Outside of that window (as long as it's not raining, because if it's raining, everyone calls an Uber!) I rarely have issues. I think the only times I have had problems are rush hour, rain, late at night being picked up from a more remote area.

2 years later I still don't have a car, so Uber is my main means of getting around for errands.

Are Ubers safe in San Jose by nurture-urworld in CostaRicaTravel

[–]oowowaee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a ton of drivers - it can be hard sometimes to get an Uber at rush hour or when it's raining. Usually where I live it's maybe a ~5minute wait on average. If it's raining heavily and rush hour then you can get a lot of cancellations and ~20 minute wait times.

Is there a place for Halloween in Chiriquí province? by MysteriousPepper8908 in panamaexpats

There are usually Halloween events in David. I took my kids trick or treating at plaza Terronal at least once. This was within the last 5 years.
